I'm rather choosey about my mangos - to me, some smell and taste like turpentine. Not that I get on the turps too often! I like the Bowen variety, do not like the Kensington Pride which have hit the market early this year. They've got to have a rich fruity smell and be very ripe. Then I enjoy them.
The Bowen mango is another name for the Kensington Pride.
I had a tree that in it's first year of fruiting, the flesh had that turpentine flavour. Not edible.
The following year the fruit was beautiful to taste.
And yes you can tell when a mango is ripe by it's beautiful aroma as well as it's colour.
When ripe the fruit comes from the tree without that sticky stuff coming out of the stem.
