Should the first person on Mars be a woman?

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Allison McIntyre, a senior NASA engineer at the Johnson Space Center in Houston said that the first person to set foot on Mars should be a woman.

“My centre director is a woman, my former division chief is a woman, we have female astronauts, but we haven't put a woman on the moon yet,” she said.

“I think the first person on Mars should be a woman,” she continued.

NASA sent the first woman into space over 40 years ago, but even so, space exploration remains a field largely dominated by men.

Do you think a woman should be the first person to set foot on Mars?

Only this weekend my husband and I were discussing this very topic!

I’m surprised at this astronaut..surely she must know the real reason why more women are not being considered for this project. Although space technology is advancing in leaps and bounds..women are still more vulnerable than men biologically when it comes to dealing with cosmic radiation which is far more dangerous than solar radiation. Mars is a long way from earth and the radiation an astronaut will be exposed to is incredibly high..much much higher than the radiation closer to Earth.

I’m told that for now although all astronauts irrespective of sex are equally vulnerable to radiation..female astronauts are more liable to suffer because of cancer risks  from breast..ovarian and uterine cancers. So it would seem at the present time..women are indeed not as suited as men for space exploration as far flung as Mars..that is not to say it won’t change in the future..according to scientists..

I think McIntyre's "complaint" is coming from a “feminist” point of view and speaking personally as a “non-feminist”..this notion of allowing women to be the first person to do this or that or to step on Mars is condescending. Women don’t require concessions made for them. The sex more suitable for the journey should be chosen...

Men are normally sent because it's very risky and men are considered the disposable sex. Not because they will receive all the accolades. So I personally am very happy to give a woman the opportunity to be blown up on the first failed trip to Mars. As I understand it no plans have been made to bring them back, so lucky her. Bon voyage.

Great post Sophie!

I can see clearly why some men are considered "the disposable sex"

Actually, I don't care what the sex of the first person to set foot on Mars is as long as the person chosen is the best qualified and experienced for the task. When I first started work after leaving school, the company I joined had a workforce of 70% female. The first three areas I was trained in had female trainers and I learned early on that the only thing that matters is who is best suited for the task.

Well said.   I find it very childish and very 80s to even suggest it as an important issue.

The best person for the job....it is being sexist to say otherwise and I agree with OM

I have mostly worked in female dominated industries. It has never bothered me or anyone else to my knowledge. A poor performer was always a poor performer. A good performer was always a good performer. It never seemed to matter if they were male female Gay, homosexual or extraterrestrial as long as they could do the job.

Men were already the first ones on Mars

She can go back to Venus

It will be a man first, imagine the performance if it's not. Then a woman will be sent to straighten out the mess he's made,  LOL LOL :-)))

I agree Polly that's the only good reason to send a woman. If Mars needs cleaning a woman is the most appropriate choice.

I wouldn't pick and choose. Any fool who wants to go male or female, let them LOL

hahaha, can't argue with that mate. Wonder if possible to grow grapes up there. A few vineyards, a bottlng plant etc

Hope I can take my bike fellas!

Wouldn't you know it, woman has already been there ...  LOL

Well said, OM. Some of the males on this site seem to think they are funny and it would be interesting to know what has caused them to think they are so superior. Having a Y chromosome? Well done.

My comment is, whoever goes to Mars, male or female, they won't last long perched on a rock withour protective clothing and breathing apparatus, like the woman in the photo.

Who said we are giving women breathing apparatus. Want want want it never stops.

What's the use of all that extra equipment if you cant see her dolled up face.

BTW that astronuat's sitting is not very lady-like, but then again I spose she's a feminazi

No I don't think she's a feminazi, she appears to have brushed her hair and I'd be able to see her hairy legs from here.

Hi Sophie, very interesting post. Yep NASA has been saying a lot about the radiation thing for years. It is a problem, and in addition, there’s the added complication of loss of bone density in long term space travel. Women have less bone density to start with and would run a much greater risk of complications. The upside is, women do exceedingly well on psychological tests for space travel and have proved to be able to deal with stress just as well as men or even better.

Sounds like you ladies are already backing out. Thought as much, too dangerous for you. No guts no glory, that's why they need a man.

"they need a man " . You can rest easy old man, they won't be looking in your direction. Pull your head in and put your teeth back in.

Hey Micha, they should make it an even number of males and females. What better opportunity to see who performs well. My bet is on the ladies!

Ray the women will do nothing but bitch and then claim they did everything, let them try it on their own. Besides we can no longer send monkeys into space the RSPCA would never allow it and someone has to be sent to make sure it's safe.

Tib

I am definitely not going if you are not coming with me

... need to have a protector Related image

I'd look after you Suze. The rest of this lot are on their own. :)

Just make sure your walking frame can withstand cosmic radiation and don't forget some spare teeth, microgravity is not your friend.

Considering it was a woman who helped put the first man on the moon and bring him back, I think it is more than fitting that a woman be the first to set foot on Mars.

Here she is after so many years finally being recognised by Obama.

18000 people work for NASA making it all about this one woman is spreading it on a bit thick.

She made a small code change in a computer about as powerful as a desktop calculator. Next they will be giving out medals for bringing coffee.

If you weren't so thick Tibbo you'd notice Kiah put up a link which covers your inane comments.

If you weren't so thick Reagan you'd realise I read the ridiculous article. Moron.

And by the way she wrote the program that failed.

The average computer game is probably 10 times more complex than the stuff she wrote.

Argh Tibbo, you do stress over the small stuff, no wonder you lost all your hair. Have a chai latte and relax.

Btw you can't compare the 1960s to 2018.

I have all my hair doggo. Ha ha But making a big deal over a woman who wrote a failed computer program and ignoring the thousands of people involved in designing and building the technology required to have a successful Apollo program is a joke. Not to mention the people who actually risked their lives. Let's all focus on the woman who wrote the failed code and make her a hero. You have got to be kidding me.

KIAH..

I loved reading about Margaret Hamilton..thank you..what a person! So I had to find out more since I was not too familiar with her achievements and came up with this very informative video..

I am very impressed...

A woman would be well aware of the personal risks involved, as would be a man.

As with any job, sending a person to Mars should be given to the most suitable, irrespective of sex.

Image result for women and mars space travel

New medical research has revealed that the mental and physical characteristics of women mean they are far better suited to long-term space travel than men. From what I have read,NASA is thinking along these lines and are considering an all-female cosmonaut crew on the first mission to put humans on Mars.

New research in the Journal Mens Health and Gender, focused on the hormonal and physical make-up of women under 30 years of age, and concludes that they are far better suited to long-term, long-distance travel than men. In particular, men in their thirties and forties are much more likely to develop the first signs of heart disease, a condition exacerbated by space travel. Women are protected from this by their comparatively high levels of oestrogen.

Heart attacks on space travel can prove problematic as drug treatments during space flight are not recommended since they are not readily absorbed in weightless conditions, the liver and the kidneys do not function at their best and the drug compounds deteriorate more quickly owing to the higher levels of radiation experienced in space. Men are also disadvantaged because they retain much higher levels of iron in the body than women, particularly in space, and this can reach toxic levels. Women’s reduced body mass, which requires fewer calories and produces less waste, also makes them yet more suitable as long-term astronauts.

It doesn’t matter if it is a male or female who is the first, this is not about sex discrimination. What matters is the one whose physiology can cope more readily with the task ahead.

Thank you for that very interesting post Banjo. As you say it's nothing to do with sex and the superiority of either..

Lets's face it as much as we crave equality..men and women are different in physiology and the team at NASA simply have to take this into account when putting together a group of astronauts for the Mars mission.

I read recently too that since it would not be feasible for pregnancies to occur in such an environment..the women who undertake this trip will have to agree to be sterilized.

Pretty grim..but then..the female astronauts are brilliant and dedicated people..

Great stuff Banj, hope our blade runner is a bit wiser.

KIAH, thought you might like to read this article, I've  put it down here  so you can find it. Cheers.

Have a great weekend  guys!

I have no idea as to why ANYONE would even want to go to darn Mars--  we have already stuffed this planet and the outer space -- guess they need to find somewhere else to ruin

PlanB, geologists want to go to Mars to study rocks  and bring them back, so having some female astronauts there helps everyone to get their rocks off.
