Should Aussies be rewarded for getting vaccinated?

The COVID outbreak in Melbourne might well have a significant effect on COVID hesitancy in Victoria, but to get more people motivated to book in for a jab in other states, does the government need to offer financial incentives?

The nation's chief medical officer, Professor Paul Kelly, says vaccine incentives such as cash, lotteries or discounts should be “on the table” to encourage more Australians - and especially older Australians - to get a COVID jab now.

Labor has backed Prof. Kelly and wants the government to offer “serious incentives” to encourage vaccinations.

“If you are in a group that has been offered the vaccine, please do not hesitate. Do not wait until the end of the year,” said Prof. Kelly.

“I think we really do need to look for incentives, as many incentives as we can.”

Some cities in the US have offered beer, million-dollar lotteries and discounts to get people to join the queue.

Health minister Greg Hunt and the federal health department had told The New Daily they weren’t considering sweeteners, but Prof. Kelly indicated this may change.

When asked at a Canberra press conference if cash, lotteries or discounted goods could be offered, Prof. Kelly said: “I think all of these things are potentially on the table.”

Do you think the government should be offering incentives to overcome vaccine hesitancy? Would it change your attitude or have you already received a shot?

I don't agree with the application of reward or punishment for receiving or not receiving the vaccine. Both can be interpreted as coercion. The only thing the public requires is the facts and transparency so that each person can make their own decision to act in what they consider is in their best interest. Since we are being told that receiving a vaccine will not stop us from getting or spreading Covid 19 but will ensure we don't get very sick if we catch it, those who are vaccinated will have little to fear when our borders are reopened. I imagine that if I am vaccinated and sitting on a plane with unvaccinated people who may have the illness, I will feel assured that I will not be very sick if I catch it. So why would vaccination passports be necessary? I do think though that our borders should remain closed until everyone who wants the vaccination has had the opportunity to receive it.

NO I do not agree with rewards-- what I want is THE TRUTH and for them to stop the conflicting messages we are getting -- I do not have faith in what we are being told and I don't think those that are "in charge"  have a bloody clue and that does not give us any faith at all.

At this time it would not matter if I was offered a million quid --I would NOT have the vaccination  -- AT THIS TIME

Pay for a Covid-19 jab, 'flu' jab, pay for a HIV/Aids jab, and add more deadly diseases for a jabs payment, and how many more ridiculous comments, answers, ideas and suggestions do we have to tolerate, because in simple terms the basis of Covid-19 is SARS CoV-2, and add MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus) to the mix in the whole range of lung diseases and viruses in the world which have not been eliminated.

(MRCA) of all coronaviruses is estimated to have existed as recently as 8000 BCE and still affects a multitude of people.

Dozens of viruses and diseases are surviving among everyone in the world 24/7, and to date ONE ONLY has been eliminated, SmallPox, all the others still exist, but worse than Covid-19 at present is the never-ending bull-s....t virus being spread by main media, non-experts, non-medicos, and hundreds of smart-ar...es in forums who waste time making useless comments relating to their fictional selves.

Yep, a million bucks, and make it retrospective (I've had my first shot). Thanks Scotty from Misinformation.

Can we also have some money for all my blood donations at the blood bank, retrospective again, of course.

That's my retirement sorted.

I do not understand why people won't get the vaccine.  There is lots more chance of being killed or injured in a vehicle accident but we still travel in vehicles, lots more chance of women dying in childbirth but women still have babies, lots more people die from blood clots without having the vaccine, and many more examples of pathetic excuses for not having the vaccinations.  Does anyone read the side effects of medicine prescribed by a Doctor? If so, do these people still take the medicine regardless of the side effects listed? I have had the Astra-Zeneca vaccination with no side effects at all.

"Does anyone read the side effects of medicine prescribed by a Doctor? If so, do these people still take the medicine regardless of the side effects listed? "

Yes darn right I do,  every time I get any medication and have refused to take many, I do not trust the Dr's and the horrid medications they try and push onto you, without THEM checking to see what side effect they have OR what other Medications they can react with

If vaccinated people were allowed to travel freely in Australia in times of lockdown I think that would be encourage people to have the vaccinatios.

The reward that I want is to be allowed to travel overseas and to do the things that I want.  I have had the first jab and the second is due in July.  Australians who want  to travel internationally (to visit family/friends/work) should not be held to ransom by those who have no interest in travel and won't get vaccinated for the sake of the whole community.  We have to plan on borders opening once there has been opportunity for people to get vaccinated, regardless of whether or not they choose to be vaccinated and not when everyone has been vaccinated.  The current outbreak in Victoria shows that we can't be completely safe in isolation.

Unfortunately, we have had state elections where being tough on borders has seen three state governments reelected and I suspect that the Commonwealth Government will use the excuse of waiting till everyone is vaccinated before reopening as a means of ensuring that it is re-elected at the next election.

I just wish we could be rewarded with more efficient hotel quarantine after the latest Victorian outbreak stemmed from a case in South Australia who caught the virus in one of their medi-hotels and then returned home to Victoria before testing positive.

Not sure I would use the term "rewarded" RnR. To improve quarantine facilities has nothing to do with "rewarding" the public. It is something that should have been put in place a long time ago by our government because it made sense.

I thought the reward to get the vaccine would be protection from the virus both for myself and the community. It would eventually mean the return of our freedoms that everyone craves - businesses back to normal and our national borders open and eventually our international borders open.  Why people needs other incentives is beyond me.  I do not need beer, lotteries or discounts.

Australians are already being rewarded in a way as the vaccine is free & will in 99.999% of cases allow you to live a longer & more healthy life & the biggest reward of all will eventually be no more disruptions to ones life due to lockdowns & travel restrictions

"Allow you to live a longer & more healthy life.......", who said so, because you have no idea what the long-term effects are of Covid-19 vaccines.
Another 'strain' just announced, of what, the only Corona virus is SARS-CoV-2 which has many variants, all only affecting the lungs, and it took from 1938 to 1973 to produce a safe influenza -flu- vaccine, therefore the Covid-19 is currently being long-term tested on all the volunteers in Australia, and other countries, those who agreed have the vaccine.

All the pathetic rewards in the world will not convince one third of Australians to be injected with an unknown, untested substance.

"Allow you to live a longer & more healthy life.......", who said so.

USA Fact Checked. Fully vaccinated adults 65 or older are 94% less likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than their same-aged peers – and 64% less likely if they have only received one dose of mRNA vaccine.

These findings are the first large-scale, real-world results confirming Pfizer and Moderna's clinical trial data (and early reports from Israel), said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which conducted the study.

So yes Spectre, it looks like you will live a longer & more healthy life. It took 3,348 years to develop a vaccine for polio, don't think I can wait that long. And from what I read & the people I talk too the take up rate is far less than your 33.33%. My estimate would be less than 10% but probably closer to 5% or less & most of those would be anti vaxxers.

But at the end of the day it's totally up to you. Aren't you lucky you're in a country that gives you a choice.

My sleeve is already rolled up for my jab lol

Have you not heard that the vaccinations does NOT stop you from passing it on OR getting it either

Too many people are conned by the government, the media and unqualified health personnel, but how many of those people understand that millions of people have died from pneumonia, and Covid-19 can cause pneumonia, not the opposite, so the fear factor of Covid-19 should be much less of a fear factor than contracting a cold which can become the flu which can turn more severe as pneumonia.

COVID-19 can cause lung complications such as Pneumonia and, in the most severe cases, acute respiratory distress syndrome, or ARDS.Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that may be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. The infection causes the lungs' air sacs (alveoli) to become inflamed and fill up with fluid or pus. That can make it hard for the oxygen you breathe in to get into your bloodstream.

I'm with those that disapprove of vaccination bribes etc.

We have to be a bit careful about how we go about this.

I hope for a situation where non vaccinated people will be encouraged to get vaccinated by being progressively limited in the public activities they can get involved in.

EG: all forms of public transport and accommodation, cinemas, restaurants, and any crowded gathering.

If a person has a medical reason to not get the vaccine, that's obviously different.

But they should also be aware of the risk to themselves.

But I do think we should progressively move this way once the vaccine is given to those eligible.

Non-vaccinated people are not risking anything, and people who are vaccinated do not have a 100% guarantee of not getting Cocid-19 virus/disease, and there isn't a risk of serious side effects in a year or two which will appear in those volunteers, meaning everyone already vaccinated.
Why was there a rush, mad panic to get an untested vaccination, that is the greatest risk of all.
In the SARS CoV-2 group of infections they begin with the common cold, then the flu, next is covid-19, a type of pneumonia then serious pneumonia from which people can die without treatment.
Fallacy, Covid-19 is NOT more serious than deadly pneumonia.
