Seniors with one voice

I see that "NATIONAL SENIORS" is now advertising for members on TV.....they claim to have membership of 230,000 and climbing and one of their aims is to lobby government for a better deal for seniors. They require a membership fee of $29, so would appear to be not entirely "not for profit". There were a number of posts about getting a political party for seniors off the ground etc, but perhaps this or some other organisation representing we oldies might be a viable alternative.........comments please, plus details of any other organisations or initiatives that may help represent us effectively to our elected representatives

I just looked at the website for COTA (Council On The Ageing) and was surprised to find that it is not a government agency as I had thought. It is a representative body for seniors. I have written to them in the same vein as my email to Greypower..... lets see what they are doing to light a fire under government?

why not? everything is commercial now, may be beauty, health, relationship, even the spirituality. you have to pay to se the god in temple, nobody keeps god in their heart! so seniors relationship is also commercialised for profit

Evergreen with all due respect you really do not know that "nobody" keeps God in their hearts even to the extent not absolutely everything is commercialised either.

Good to see another poster :)

Phyl.

Howard Satler was only part of the rally in Perth Tessata, set up by 6PR , also working hard before , during and after the rally were Steve mills and Tony McManus,,, early mornings,,, Simon Beaumont from the morning show and a lot of other 6 PR people gave their time , and were really lovely to the people who attended ,,Sadly the answers they got a week or two later were just as expected , sod all until after the Henry report, ans then off to committees ,so likely ,2010 or very close before anything eventuates the whole of the staff at 6PR deserve the praise for the effort they put in ,and like most of the pensioners and disadvantaged ,they were shattered and disgusted at the responce it got

Thanks for pointing that out Dusty I know there were a lot of good people behind the Pensioners and did all they could at the time.

What I meant was that if we could get talk-back radio, and TV in every state to have a rally on the same day and get as many of our friends and families to come along as possible Maybe Just Maybe our Pollies would realise the amount of votes they hopefully will NOT get.

In addition to the post I made on this board addressed to its administrators, I also sent emails to COTA, Greypower and National seniors asking what action they had taken or intended to take regarding the lack of action by government in reviewing/increasing the rate of welfare payments. To date I have received no reply from anyone. Its not hard to see why people trying to do something for seniors are disheartened.......there is not much interest in our plight.

I hope Kfchugo you are not holding your breath for a response?

You should see how "blue" I am.....

Would the person on this website who called me greedy and that it would ruin the economy of Australia wanting an extra $100 a week for the pensioners please come up with an excuse for the SENIOR Public Servants getting an extra $1400.00 a week. I cant think of one.

And the person who said Pollies dont get enough should kindly remember all the perks they get food, fuel etc etc in fact they dont need to use their pay for anything.

In the climate change debate it has been mentioned that lower paid and pensioners will be compensated for the extra money it is going to cost us. Well going by past performance we may get an extra $1 a week and be told we should be ever so grateful for that.

I dont know Tessata if you are referring to me when I said there is a difference between pensioners NEED and GREED, and I wouldn't even try to defend the public servants pay hike.

I note in an earlier post you said you were coping well financially but 'would like some of life's luxuries' (or words similar) hence your demand for $100/week pension increase . That should really capture pollies attention and sting them into action, you wanting an increase for 'luxuries'. I think basic living expenses (something you have apparently no problems with) would have been the main criteria.

Secondly I thought the purpose of this forum is for logical debate, rather than take cheap swipes at un-named 'persons' who earn your displeasure by disagreeing with your rants.

Well said B Frank

There seems to be reasonable agreement that SOMETHING should be done. Like most, I wonder just WHAT. A couple of ideas;

1. What do we want improved? People need to know what they are being asked to support. It's all a bit fuzzy edged at present. So many needs, wants and wishes.

2. I agree that it is difficult to get people together. Maybe we should think outside the square and not even try to do it that way.

Rallies are 5 min. wonders (have marched in a few myself over the years).

What really counts is Public Opinion and Votes.

Pollies and their staff continually scan newspapers, public chat sites and radio talk shows.

Maybe we can invent a new kind of Senior Power, using modern technology en mass.

Sorry I can't acknowledge the ideas already expressed by you; I don't know how to run two pages at the same time and I can't remember who said what :)

I never at any times said that I wanted an extra $100 or even $1 for extra luxuries. I said that even though I was alright at the moment I knew lots of others who were not managing and I like many others are finding with everything except the pension going up sky high and that the pension has not kept up with the cost of living so that even people who are managing ALRIGHT AT THE MOMENT this will soon not be possible as we go through our capital to keep up with costs. So if you read my emails Bfrank I think you will find that I have a problem with the *I'm alright Jack attitude of some seniors" because I care about my friends who are struggling and I think of a future where I may be in that same position.

Errr read your emails Tessata? Now how would I do that sunshine?

Who claimed you were greedy? Have you the intestinal fortitude to name him/her? Who here has said they are content with the miserly pension payment?

I think if you are honest you will find you said, as I have claimed, that your were managing financially (and deeply resented someone offering advice on budgeting) BUT had nothing left over for life's little luxuries.

What I find repulsive Tessata is rather than debate an issue (perhaps you simply dont know how to?) you continue to take a swipe at others as you have in your copied quote above, simply because they question your RANTS. You initially used the word 'I' but now under pressure have dragged your 'friends' into the argument so you dont appear to be greed-driven.

What about taking a couple of Valium and have a good rest?
