Royal Australian Air Force adopts gender-neutral language

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has replaced the term 'airmen' with 'aviators' as it enters its second century.

Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Mel Hupfeld, AO, DSC revealed this change on 31 March, at a centenary dinner which hosted past and present aviators.

Air Marshal Hupfeld said that as Air Force charts its path forward, he wants to instil a stronger sense of identity.

"Of all the work that has been done in developing our Air Force culture, the most challenging dilemma has been fully explaining who we are," Air Marshal Hupfeld said.

"We understand well enough what we are and what we do - but have never quite managed to successfully articulate WHO we are.

"We are ALL aviators.

"As an Air Force, we are born of the air and space. It is our home, and the place from which we serve our nation. Our trade is aviation.

"In everything that we do, we are aviators first and foremost. All of us, by virtue of what we do and what we believe. It is what binds us together."

Air Marshal Hupfeld cautioned against confusing the role of pilots with Air Force personnel's common and collective purpose to the nation – "to think, act and imagine from the perspective of the skies and space above us."

The change was timed with the announcement to revamp Air Force culture through the Our Air Force, Our Culture program.

The new program builds on the foundation of previous measures, and closely aligns with the update to the Air Force Strategy launched in 2020.

Do you like this change? What other outdated terms need updating across Australia?

GREAT NEWS!

What's wrong with using the word  :   PILOT ?

Not all Air Force personnel are pilots. Aviator is masculine, aviatrix is feminine. Correct original base Air Force rank is Aircraftman/Aircraftwoman (thanks to Winston Churchill). This "gender equality" rubbish is becoming totally ridiculous. Language is a natural evolution and should never be changed just because a vocal minority think up some, to them, "offensive" interpretation of words.

I agree Hola, and BillW41 who wrote, "This "gender equality" rubbish is becoming totally ridiculous."

One massive failing of the crazy 'equality' idea is the DNA, different forever in males and females, but I believe that Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Mel Hupfeld, AO, DSC would not have the common sense to be aware of that fact.

Gender equality is impossible to create in Science and Nature, impossible in creatures, flora and fauna, it doesn’t exist in a vacuum, it is being corruptly conducted by a minority of humans with low intelligence in a world full of gender bias.
Trying to enforce an hallucination named 'Political Correctness' on humans is as useless as trying to resurrect a dead bird with the 'kiss of life'.

Try "aviatrix"...as was used to describe most of the ladies in an earlier comment. Air Force should focus on its key task of keeping our northern "neighbours" in check.

You beat me to it, Jotar. Perhaps the powers that be don't know that term.

Our AIRFORCE OUR CULTURE, yawn .... woke rubbish

Aviatrix is not gender -neutral.  It means female aviator. Aviator is the correct term for both male and female.

The feminists will be targeting engineering terms next Out will go male and female couplings, Master Brake cylinders in Cars and Jock straps etc

I wonder how the French are getting on with their completely Male/Female (or Female/Male) language with no neutral tense? I think Spanish and Italian would have the same conundrum.

Does that only apply to pilots? What about all male and female workers on Ground Duties. I was a Photographer in the RAAF and all male and female photographers were just called "Photographer". As far as I am concerned a pilot is a pilot male or female or an engine fitter is an engine fitter male or female.
