Rolling Stones retire controversial hit

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger says the band will no longer play the song Brown Sugar at concerts over concerns it is racially insensitive.

Jagger told the LA Times  that the band has played the song every night since 1970, but it was time to take it out of the set list.

The lyrics from the song centre around a slaver who whips enslaved black women at midnight.

Brown Sugar lyrics

Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in the market down in New Orleans
Skydog slaver know he's doin' all right
Hear him whip the women just around midnight

Brown Sugar, how come you taste so good

Brown Sugar, just like a young girl should

Drums beatin' cold, English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wonderin' when it's gonna stop
House boy knows that he's doin' all right
You should have heard him just around midnight

Brown Sugar, how come you taste so good?

Brown Sugar, just like a young girl should

Brown Sugar, how come you dance so good?
Brown Sugar, just like a black girl should

I bet your mama was a tent show queen
And all her boyfriends were sweet 16
I'm no school boy but I know what I like
You should have heard them just around midnight

Brown Sugar, how come you taste so good
Brown Sugar, just like a young girl should

I said, yeah, yeah, yeah, wooo!
How come you, how come you dance so good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, wooo!
Just like a, just like a black girl should
Yeah, yeah, yeah, wooo!

Do you agree with the Rolling Stones decision to stop playing Brown Sugar?

Yes, after reading the lyrics! Good tune, though they have a heap more songs anyway.

Well I never liked the Stones so never really listened to it, but by reading the lyrics it should never have been written in the first place

According to Keith Richards those particular lyrics are about the horrors of slavery and that's what I've always taken the lyrics to mean. Jagger claims he would never write that song today. Why not? Is it racially insensitive if Brown Sugar is simply a pseudonym for Mexican heroin.

More PC crap absolute disgrace. Jacka.

If the song is about slavery as Jagger says, then why try to cover up what used to happen by not singing the song?

All this PC rubbish has gone too far. Not talking about, or in this case, singing about slavery doesn't make it go away.  It used to happen... still happens today. It's appalling, but trying to brush it all under the carpet won't make it go away, infact it should be talked about & sung about to bring it out into the open to try to get it stopped.

Singing it every night since 1970 and now suddenly deciding it's inappropriate???

Total BS.

If this criteria was applied to modern day rappers they wouldn't survive IMO.
