Retirement Villages - opinions please, but be kind!

Hello,

I am doing some research on behalf of my parents, who are close to retirement age. They are both fairly fit, but have raised the idea of moving to a retirement village. They like the idea of downsizing and living with other retirees who have similar interests such as golf, painting and swimming.

I'd firstly like to ask if anyone on this site lives in a retirement village. Are you happy? What are the first steps my parents should do when looking for the right place to buy/live in?

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hannah

Yes Innes and I agree but sometimes it's the only way that an older couple can be cared for and stay together

Yes Maggs .........health is another matter and Paliative care for one or both parents needs to be considered...........usually though at this stage a Nursing Home oprion is the only way .........Cost structures for admittance and daily care are quite different

You are correct Maggs, but I did note that necessity is a different thing altogether.

Sorry clay.  We were both writing at the same time.  Your comment was better expressed.

Not to worry innes ........we got the information  over for our friend to consider so all is OK ............clay

Yes you did, thanks for that I meant before he took unwell

We would be living in a community with people our own age and activities, outings arranged with medical facilities on hand without having to drive to health appointments every week etc, and we'd also have at least a little social life whereas now there's none, our neighbours are nice young lads who like to party and hardly know we exist altho' one of them does look after our lawn for which I pay him and we're both happy.

Considering your comments Maggs ..........I think that it is now time to move .........your quality of life will improve and after all that is very important ..........Money is a second consideration ...........clay

Seggie.  March's 'Fifty-plus' news this month has an ad. on page 2 'thinking of buying into a retirement village?'  It's by the consumer.vic.gov.au/retire and well worth reading every word, then requesting a brochure or you can visit the website. I was much happier to have the brochure and be able to read every word of it. That is, when some time ago, I had thought of a retirement village until I realised I need money.  Lots of it. Darn.

Seggie again. Ooops, what happened? You have got me twice. Sorry about that. Don't know how that happened.
