Retirement living

I'm back again.

After reading James experience with assisted living in a retirement village, it's enough to make me wonder what to do.

A friend and husband went into a retirement village thinking that there would be for life, but at some stage, they would have to move out of their home into an assisted unit that was on the signed agreement.

Guess what! The village sold out to new owners who have units, but no assisted living whatsoever.

It's OK if your health continues to be fine, but if not, what happens? They moved, thinking their future would be OK there.

It doesn't seem right to me.

Another problem. How do singles, without any superannuation, manage to live in a retirement village? How can you still run a car, the internet and an occasional 'seniors' meal, not to mention any holiday.

Come on, single pensioners, tell me how you manage? Do you only use a bus which can be very hard if one is elderly, or do you just sit and read borrowed books?

From what I gather, weekly costs can be from $80 upwards to $100. Assisted living units, with supposed 3 meals a day, $1,100 a month.

I myself can't see the point in going into a retirement place IF you are still well enough--why not just stay in your own place and pay someone to do a few things for you--would be just as cheap

Have a friend who moved into a retirement village - paid the price of a house to get in there and on top of that, had to pay $80 per week for all the maintenance etc. That was OK - she could afford that. About a year on, and she is now paying over $110 per week, the lawns haven;t been cut for over 6 weeks, they've dumped heaps of mulch and top soil out the back and told the residents to help themselves. That's saving them heaps on gardeners, because the older folk do like to see their gardens looking good. Then, on top of that, my friend's income has gone down, quite dramatically, because of the sharemarket crash. She's really questioning now if she did the right thing.

Yes Bev and on top of that she would have had stamp duty to pay when she bought the new place--that why I think it would be better to stay in your own place and pay some one to do the garden etc for you
