Reporter sacked for fabricating stories

Property website Domain has sacked a reporter for fabricating sources and quotes and apologised to readers.

Journalist Kate Bartels was first caught out after fabricating quotes from psychologist Dr Sarah Barker and then Domain discovered other incidents of fabricated quotes.

Domain editorial director Adrian Lowe issued the following apology to readers:

“At Domain, we strive to be the trusted voice on property. We have always been proud of our editorial heritage and the standards we set out to meet in each article we publish.

"Unfortunately, we have discovered we did not meet the high standards we expect of ourselves. We owe you an apology.

"We were recently alerted that two lifestyle articles misrepresented someone as a source. When this became clear, we removed these articles and the journalist involved has since left Domain.

"Unfortunately, it soon became clear that this was not an isolated incident and the journalist had in fact misrepresented other people and their professions.

"For this, we are sorry. We have since commenced a full investigation into all of the journalist’s work. We are committed to investigating this matter and setting the record straight.

"I want to express to you, our valued readers, how disappointed we are at this conduct. It goes against everything we value at Domain, and, most importantly, it is a severe breach of the confidence you place in us to bring you trusted and reliable information.

"We hold ourselves to extremely high standards to ensure that you receive the most reliable property information in Australia. We can and will do better.”

Do you find it interesting that the reporter accused of fabricating quotes worked in  real estate? Who do you trust more – real estate agents or journalists?

Not all real estate people are bad and same for reporters, but there are always some bad apples for sure.

This woman is obviously suffering from delusion if she thought she wouldn't be found out, must say I have a sneaky suspicion Domain smelt a rat before the story broke. just saying, but turned a blind eye? Hope they don't sue me for saying that.

She is in good company as Boris Johnston, British P.M. was sacked as editor for telling lies.

Three times from different papers!

Domain has announced it has taken down “hundreds of articles written by Bartels… until the investigation is complete"…how did it get to “hundreds?” Isn’t the editor the person responsible for what stories are released?? Lowe should go too..not fit to be editor.

Nine has a fifty four per cent share in Domain…so nobody knew what was going on? I don’t buy it..how many times has Domain been caught out…anyone knows?

I feel sorry for this young reporter..yes..she did wrong...however, if the Editor was doing his job and nipped it in the bud, her name would not be mud now.

People with mental disorders (which this journalist clearly has) can and do work across all professions and job types. They are very confident convincing individuals who are practiced experts at covering up their issues. Quite often it takes an average untrained person a long time to detect that there is something wrong. And then the problem is how to categorize their problem. Some can be cured and some cannot. It is not the fault of Domain that it went undetected for so long. One needs to have actual evidence, and plenty of it, before accusing someone. Especially these types of people as they are very clever at fighting back. From quite a bit of personal experience Domain have my sympathy. It is not the profession, it is the individual person.

I have absolutely no sympathy for Domain, the very idea!  Recently, they were called out for fudging auction numbers to make clearance rates look better. Not the first time they've been naughty!

If Lowe had done his job well and if there are properly trained sub-editors in the organisation, they would have spotted this a lot sooner. The reporter joined Domain in April last year...she is in her twenties...obviously not in a right frame of mind. How do we know what "management" told her she had to deliver? How do we know how much pressure was put on this young woman...after all they are in the real estate business!

I do feel sorry for her.

Hardworker, how do you know the reporter has 'mental problems'?

I do not know the facts, but she might find a future with the ABC.

Duck your head, Tony, there will be incoming. BTW, I like your comment.

Me too!

If that's the case, then I am surprised there are still any journalists LEFT at a number of so called junk magazines! Nicole Kidman has been pregnant for 5 years straight (or is that nine years?), etc.etc. etc. Absolute rubbish printed...

From the cover of Womans Day we now have King Charles III, I found it incomprehensible that the succession was missed by BBC, ABC, Reuters, CNN, Fox, Sky, etc etc. I never read the story inside but I suspect the cover was a bit of journalistic hyperbole. This young lady may have a bright future in certain sectors of the media, how about as a scriptwriter for some reality TV program.
