renting out a room

I'm a widow who owns a little cottage in a small village. I would like to rent out a room for company & safety in case of falls etc plus helping a little financially. I really can't envisage having a female border as this is my home & I do not want someone who may want to take over what I like to do, cooking, house arrangement etc. If I get the right male border it means I can cook & garden but he can mow etc. Will this be a problem, if I do this will centerlink think we are living together.

Didee, can't help you with the Centrelink question, but as a lady living on your own, you should make sure any potential boarder has a police clearance, just my opinion. Cheers.

would always do that & I do appreciate your care. Thank you so much, cheers Di

You're very welcome Di

Check with your insurance company as well.  It is my  understandstanding  that if you invite someone into your home and something goes "missing" you are not covered.

Thanks Radish, I will do that.

If it was me I would structure an official lease for the room ... put a lock on the room so you have proof for Centrelink if required that you have a border as opposed to a partner. An extra postbox for his mail like "37A & 37B"

Of course the other matter being if you have a falling out you have a legal means of evicting him.

Thanks Abby, that sounds like great advice to me, cheers

Abby, do you know if you can make your own lease or should you go through a solicitor, thanks again

In NSW you can buy lease forms at the newsagent or a real estate agent can do one for you ... do not know where you are.

Thanks Abbey, I'm in Victoria so should be the same. Enjoy your day xxx
