Push to ban millions of Aussies from having gas cooktops and heaters in their homes

A state MP is calling for his state to ban the installation of gas appliances in new homes.

Victorian Greens MP Tim Read says he believes his state is trailing the rest of the world when it comes to phasing out natural gas use.

“It's ridiculous that Victorian laws are forcing new homes to connect to gas when we know how expensive, polluting and unhealthy it is,” Dr Read said.

“Cities and countries around the world are going gas free, yet Victoria is a laggard, forcing homes to be hooked up to gas.”

The push is coming just as Victoria enters its coldest months of the year and at a time when wholesale electricity prices are threatening to go through the roof.

Would you support such a ban? Or is this taking it too far?

Gas is probably the best way to heat a house.

It is a case of the Climate Change fanatics once again taking idiotic ideas too far. Australia does not have a problem with climate change that we can change. Our contribution to the guilty carbon leaks are infinitesimal and, in majority, created by nature. To relate our climate problems to bush fires, floods, temperature changes is nonsense. For thousands of years our continent has had these - it is cyclical and absolutely nothing we do will change this. However the same does not apply to the problems created by China, India, USA, Russia and a few other countries. Unless they improve we do have a problem and our climate fanatics should concentrate on those countries. I will accept that how we treat the environment is important in more ways than forever squawking about climate.

Totally agree with mitch1945

Gas is definitely cheaper to heat a house than electricity. Our gas bills are around $380 for 2 months in winter, and less than $60 in summer. Imagine how much our electricity bill would be if we were to constantly heat our 3 bedroom home - it'd be around $800 for 3 months! This equates to $1,140 for gas for 6 months compared to $1,600 - it's a no-brainer.

Our heater is kept at 19 deg C, which is less than some recommendations of 21-22 degrees.

It is all very well to have an all electric house. When the power goes out, what do you cook and heat with. With  gas at least you can cook something. How are restaurants going to cope with electric stoves and cooktops?

Any good chef will always cook with gas.

A great idea from the member! Electric  Reverse cycle ac units (aka heat pumps) are a far more efficient (250-300% efficient) and lower carbon emissions than the ever increasing priced natural gas can ever be.   When run off a renewable electrical energy source even more so.

Just another way to increase our cost of living even more. Ludicrous politicians who don't understand what it's like to struggle financially, yet again :(

Spot on Cheezil61. I am sure these Govt officials and big businesses go to a "rip off" school and learn how to suck the population dry.

I have 2 gas cooktops, one indoors and one in the outdoor area. I also have 4 air cons all are heat pumps. We also have a 5kW solar system. Our son recently decided to set us up with battery storage (2 of them) plus extra solar panels, and when the power goes out I have a choice - gas or electric. There was absolutely no way we could have afforded this new system - it came to just under $30K. Not everyone has a family member who can do that for them but I do have some tricks I do to save money even if its just on gas now.

When cooking a casserole and all is in it and now its a slow cook for an hour or two. Bring it just to the boil and turn it off and don't lift the lid. After 30 mins, lift the lid, stir, and turn it on again over a medium heat and when there is the slightest bubble, turn off the gas and don't lift lid. I do this and start first thing in the morning and by the evening meal its as tender as if I had done it in a slow cooker. So far and I am expected it to die any day soon, my 20lb gas bottle has gone from 3 months to 5 months. At $25 per bottle, I am saving about $16.

I am now going to build myself a fire pit with a roof to keep the rain off as I cook. Years ago I was a brickie on the Tuna Towers in Cairns (in the early 1980's) and like many things, you don't lose the art. I have a lot of trees on this place, so I could use all the branches that have fallen or when trimmed.

Interesting that so many people oppose a ban on gas in homes

Yet so many people voted for Labor Greens and Independents because of Climate Change ????

I have no idea why anyone is taking any notice of this idiot!!!

I have both gas and electric...the electricity went off three times this year and stayed off for hours. Good thing I have a gas cooker top.
