Proposed postal strike could cause heavy delays
The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) today announced strike action is on the cards.
“Workers have no choice but to fight for their jobs and they’ve sent that message through a strong vote for the right to go on strike.” TWU national secretary Michael Kaine said in a statement.
A vote resulted in 90 percent of TWU union members in favour of action to protect their jobs under the Fair Work Act and to strike unless StarTrack provided job security guarantees.
StarTrack is a transport company owned by Australia Post.
“Any industrial action would have a significant impact on customers, particularly those in vulnerable regional communities requiring essential supplies such as medicines, protective equipment and vaccines.” StarTrack representative Michelle Skehan said
All workers must have the right to withdraw their labour if negotiations have broken down. It's not the workers who should carry the blame, it's the employers who have caused the breakdown in negotiations in the majority of instances of withdrawal of labour. Strikes are always a last resort.
