Proposed postal strike could cause heavy delays

The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) today announced strike action is on the cards.

“Workers have no choice but to fight for their jobs and they’ve sent that message through a strong vote for the right to go on strike.” TWU national secretary Michael Kaine said in a statement.

A vote resulted in 90 percent of TWU union members in favour of action to protect their jobs under the Fair Work Act and to strike unless StarTrack provided job security guarantees.

StarTrack is a transport company owned by Australia Post.

“Any industrial action would have a significant impact on customers, particularly those in vulnerable regional communities requiring essential supplies such as medicines, protective equipment and vaccines.” StarTrack representative Michelle Skehan said

All workers must have the right to withdraw their labour if negotiations have broken down. It's not the workers who should carry the blame, it's the employers who have caused the breakdown in negotiations in the majority of instances of withdrawal of labour. Strikes are always a last resort.

aren't they lucky they are recognized as workers, aren't they lucky then can walk off on strike, aren't they lucky they have someone to help fight for their rights.  Who fights for carers??

Now is not the time for these games. These workers are lucky to have not suffered throughout the last 18 months. They have had their regular work and a paycheck far more than in many other sectors.

They will get no sympathy no matter what they think the justification if people do not receive their purchases.

The TWU said unless StarTrack provided job security guarantees, including the same pay and conditions for labour-hire workers, caps on the use of lower-paid outside hire and offering work to employees before it is contracted out, then workers will go on strike.

In an era where strikes are very few and far between, things had to start getting pretty bad for Australia Post workers to have to strike to protect their pay and conditions.
