Popular car recalled for ‘exploding’ seatbelt fault

Hyundai Australia is recalling the latest i30 sedan, saying the model contains defective safety equipment that can explode and potentially injure occupants.

The vehicle’s seatbelt pre-tensioner – a component that automatically tightens seatbelts during an accident – is potentially faulty.

“Due to a manufacture issue, the seat belt pre-tensioner inflator may fracture when deployed in the event of an accident,” the company says.

“If the seat belt pre-tensioner inflator fractures, metal fragments may be propelled at high speed towards the vehicle occupants causing serious injury.”

The recall affects more than 5000 vehicles manufactured between 2020 and 2022.

Do you drive a Hyundai i30? How can we ensure these defects don’t happen again?
