Pollies say thanks to taxpayers for their ‘golden goodbye’

There was a silver lining for the federal MPs and senators who lost their seats in the May federal election – a ‘golden goodbye’ – and you were the generous benefactors.

The more formally titled ‘resettlement allowance’ is a one-off payment worth up to six months of a federal politician’s $211,000 base salary.

The Australian reports that taxpayer-funded payments for federal MPs and senators ousted by voters have nearly doubled between 2019 and May’s election, with $2.2 million spent this year on 30 politicians who lost their seats.

The allowance was established in 2006 and is paid only to politicians who retired ‘involuntarily’ through defeat or loss of party endorsement.

Parliamentarians who resign are ineligible.

They work hard – or most of them do – but do you think politicians are well paid?

TOO WELL PAID! LURKS & PERKS ABOUND!

An absolute disgrace. Snouts in the trough, backroom deals, black money in paper bags, travel expense wroughts, then when they finally get dumped, after feathering their nests for years, they take a final bite out of the taxpayer's purse. No wonder there's no money for Hospitals and the Health System. How do these mongrels sleep at night. Bring back the noose. Jacka.

If they ran the country well they would deserve what they are paid. I'll leave that open.

In big business the top executives get more than pollies do and they seem to get their bonus's whether or not the company does well. Top executives also usually get millions in golden handshakes even if they have made poor decisions.

That explains how George Christensen, the Member for Manila, received $105,000 after nominating for an unwinnable position on One Nation's Senate ticket at the last election - I'm sure he will spend it wisely at the bars he allegedly frequents at Angeles City on his frequent trips there.

At least someone with conservative values got the money, as opposed to these woke no-hopers!

Remember it's government that created redundancy payments when people are forced to leave a job they have been in for some time. Now it looks like politicians are only getting what they gave all Australian workers who lose their job for one reason or another; a percentage of their current pay.

Yes, but ALL Australians who volunteer to put their life on the line get "Sweet Bugger All" and have done so since WW1.

The government support for wounded, KIA or retired is a Joke. Someone, back when I was in Service who gets high cholesterol gets sent home, after seeing a doctor, with a few food recipes to help lower his cholesterol. That I know for sure!

But, who cares because the retiring pollies get HEAPS for the rest of their lives even if they get another top job.

Things will have to change...the tide is turning and people are not happy they are paying for politicians to live high on the hog at their expense.

Some enter politics to hopefully make a change, to help those who need it. Others only jump into it (totally unqualified) to get rich.

A resettlement allowance is probably appropriate, but 3 months should be adequate.

I don't think anyone should be getting a golden handshake these days with the way everything is going.  But after having said that I truly don't think any of them are worthy of any thing more than a GOOD BYE !!! They make more than enough $ while collecting all the benefits that goes along with the position.  Anyone in the health/humane and aged care industry working above and beyond with their dedication don't get a golden handshake and basically work for peanuts !!! So why should the politicians be given a monetary good bye ?

See ya later guys says Albo, don't work too hard as he floats off on holiday after being on the job for two minutes

Anthony Albanese Criticised For Taking A Holiday After Just Three Months As Prime Minister Nix Olympia News

As a DFRDB member of the ADF we paid into a self insurance fund - not superannuation! 20 years minimum Service was required for a member to receive a defined benefit payment for life. You could accept a commutation payment of your own money (entitlement) to ease yourself and family back into civilian life. If you served less you were considered unacceptable for such support. All who did accept commutation are claimed to made a benefit and on repaying the commutation (fixed to life expectancy age) are required to continue paying until they die. The amount now deducted is near the compensation payment level for Accepted service related Conditions. The level of elitism available to those having been in Parliament for such a short time in comparison is an absolute disgrace.
