PM warns of ‘malicious’ hacks by foreign government

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Friday that Australian organisations were being targeted by malicious cyber activity supported by state-based actors.

The details of the attack were provided by the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) to both the government and the opposition.

The activity was believed to be targeting all levels of government, industry, political organisations, education, health, essential service providers, and operators of other critical infrastructure.

“We know it is a sophisticated state-based cyber actor because of the scale and nature of the targeting and the tradecraft used,” Mr Morrison said.

The ACSC has been briefing states and territories on risks and mitigations.

“Cyber security is a shared responsibility of us all. It is vital that Australian organisations are alert to this threat and take steps to enhance the resilience of their networks,” Mr Morrison said.

The ACSC and the Department of Home Affairs has published a more detailed technical advisory with advice for Australian businesses and organisations to protect themselves.

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese said the attacks were serious and it was important for all sides of politics to act as one on this issue.

“We understand that from these briefings the relevant federal agency that all levels of government, critical infrastructure, and the private sector, are being targeted in a sophisticated state-based cyber operation,” Mr Albanese said.

“We support our security agencies and their efforts to address the serious and growing threat.

“We urge all Australians, Australian businesses, and other organisations, to listen to the advice that the Cyber Security Centre provides to the public.”

Are you worried about Australia being targeted in this way? Have you downloaded the CovidSafe app? Do you feel like your information is safe?

Yes I am concerned about such things -- I am sure many are

Have you downloaded the CovidSafe app? Do you feel like your information is safe?

----

No, I have not and not I do not trust the app at all

Plan B - Same here, I didn't even sign up to MyHealth, Who knows who can get into your details.

One skerrick of evidence that this is the CCP, which I have no doubt it probably is, then the sooner we begin to distance ourselves from this nation, as it appears other nations are trying to do, the better.

The problem with this CCP government is that I wonder if they actually see themselves,  how,  they make enemies of us, and just think its normal to treat so called friends as pieces of filth.

Why on earth would China do stuff like this, if there isn't an agenda rising???

They are a great danger, this nations government, instead of learning from the mistakes of other aggressive nations over history , they just fall into the same ambitious trap of build up and take down , learnt nothing until they are the world pariah.

Or should that be the world Pirahna????

Because that's what they feel like right now, threatening our country putting bans on things ,having a bad mouthing of Australia by an  ambassador.

"Are you worried about Australia being targeted in this way? Have you downloaded the CovidSafe app? Do you feel like your information is safe?"

Yes, we are concerned about hackers. Malicious cyber attacks can cripple Australia by targeting the power grids, the military, transport and government. We don't think any information is safe but as long as our bank accounts remain safe and our identity is not stolen then the rest of the information is probably out there in the public domain in any event.

We have not downloaded the CovidSafe app because our mobiles are too old and can't accept the app.

Yes, I am worried about Australia being hacked -- and I would also not trust the Government with their App either.

I am a cynical bugger and will remain so

It would be a mistake to think that only China does this sort of thing. Most developed countries try out the security of others, including friendly ones, to keep tabs on what is going on.

One of the issues overlooked is the trade deal the U.S. signed with China early this year where China, in an apparent attempt to sooth Trumps angst, agreed to a massive lift in purchases from the U.S.

Australia will suffer because of this as China are now obligated to buy products from the U.S. that they have been buying from us. Agricultural and energy being the most likely ones to be affected. Think barley.

We also have a Free Trade Agreement with China, signed by Tony Abbott, which would account for a fair amount of the Chinese goods we now see in the shops.

We must of course be aware of any hacking or snooping by other countries and often the wisest course of action is to let them know that we know what they are doing. In this world of Globalisation trade is the main player and China is number one and the U.S. don't like that but we need to trade with China. Our biggest problem is maintaining a working relationship with both countries who are currently involved in an arm wrestle that could have serious consequences.

Well said Tanker.

Actually, Australia is so ignorant. Most of these hacks are happening from within our own country by foreign agents residing here classified as foreign students. What a joke !

I also agree we all have to be very careful of any hacks not only to goverments and businesses but also oursevles, if they do manage to get any of your information its not only your bank details they look for but also your name address and birth date so they can then use all this information for illegal use and you end up paying the cost.

For many years I have said:

In the whole world there are no 100.00% secure computers or phones or routers or industrial PLC etc etc.

There is no existing computer hardware nor any CPU chips that are secure, not since the Honeywell MULTICS computers in 1960 were taken out of service!

So computer scientists know it can be done!

But the Intels and AMDs of the world seeemingly cannot be bothered, speed is everything to them. Security is seemingly not important enough.

There can not be any secure software OS as without secure computer hardware it simply cannot be done.

All the PMs in most countries and all the IT people in the world are deluding themselves and others that some  magic software bandage will fix it all.

I am just paranoid enough to ask: Why there are no longer secure computers?

Sorry peole of the world you and I are screwed.

Dead right there GrayConputin, the whole planet is

So why the hell are we surprised at this -- our governments are selling us out and then they have the  ----ing hide to talk about malicious hacks?!
