PM blasts Morrison for ‘opportunistic’ and ‘unprincipled’ act

The federal government is reviewing the rules that guide caretaker governments after a furious PM blasted the actions of the Morrison government on election day.

Anthony Albanese has slammed the then federal government for fast-tracking a media release about an asylum-seeker boat.

He labelled it as opportunistic, unprecedented and unprincipled, and said it should never be allowed to happen again.

A report reveals that senior staffers in the Morrison government hurried government bureaucrats to release a statement about the boat being intercepted.

The findings have raised questions about established conventions relating to the pre-election ‘caretaker’ period.

“A convention relies on some element of decency and goodwill,” the PM said. “That’s the nature of convention as opposed to rules. And here we have a government that was prepared to trash the convention.

“There was nothing respectful about the actions of the government on that day. It was opportunistic. It was unprincipled. It was unprecedented and it shouldn’t have happened.”

Did you see the alert or a social media post about the asylum seeker boat on election day? Did it have any impact on your vote?

I could never believe anything the Morrison government put forward.

I had a postal vote, did not see any alert, do not care and I think most people had made up their minds before election day.

“A convention relies on some element of decency and goodwill,” the PM said. “That’s the nature of convention as opposed to rules. And here we have a government that was prepared to trash the convention." (from OP)

Technically conventions are rules, but they are flexible and the convention also says : sensitive information that is potentially politically significant should not be released publicly during the caretaker period unless a threat to life exists or some other urgency concerning public safety and security is involved.

This claim needs more attention to prove there was no "threat to life."

As a side note Albanese should stop his whining and get on with the job...his plate is full to overflowing.

I am not for any of them...all over ripe tomatoes IMO.

Good on you Sophie! I'm with you on that one...Geez just get on with it Alby for heavens sake!

I agree Sophie, if Labor wants to get things done perhaps they could have recalled Parliament a bit quicker to get legislation through rather than Albanese doing a lap of honour around the world.

I just read the post again and, as usual, Albanese hasn't done his homework. The first paragraph says that the government is reviewing the "rules".

The sixth paragraph says “A convention relies on some element of decency and goodwill,” the PM said. “That’s the nature of convention as opposed to rules. And here we have a government that was prepared to trash the convention."

By his own words, no rules were broken so why is a review necessary?

I posted this in Politics:

"I see that Labor wants a full enquiry into a statement on election day about an illegal boat being intercepted and Morrison's role in it. They also want a full enquiry into the RoboDebt system. My question is; what does all of this achieve? We have electricity prices increasing by hundreds of dollars, cost of living increasing well beyond CPI, fuel costs increasing pressure on small business and the possibility of foot and mouth disease being introduced.

Surely what has happened in the past has nothing to do with solving the immediate problems facing the average Australian? An enquiry should be carried out if there has been anything illegal done and the illegality is continuing but RoboDebt was cancelled and those who were involved got compensation. What Morrison is alleged to have done was nothing more than pre-election campaigning. An enquiry will cost money that could be used to ease pressures by continuing the excise relief on fuel which can't be extended because of the current debt."

Note to the PM - Put your head down and your A''' up and get on the job at hand and forget about yesterday.

Yes PM, and your ministers, get on with it I'm tired of hearing the continued blaming on TV of the last government. If you do half as good a job as the Lib/Nats did during all the turmoil of Floods, Fires and COVID I may accept you.

Our Albo is off again, this time to Ultimo to do battle with Ita Buttrose. His mission to ‘safeguard’  the ABC against political interference.

I see he loves to do it all himself preferring not to send Michelle Rowland  (his newly appointed Communications and Arts Minister) to do her duty!

Anthony Albanese's visit to Ita Buttrose to 'protect the ABC'

Coming to see you Ita...

Prime Minister describes Ita Buttrose as 'extraordinary' amid speculation she could be new ABC chair - ABC News

Welcome Albo! We serve nice meals at the ABC!

Michelle Rowland has been asked about the ABC's alleged bias and her response fills me with confidence that it will be addressed; she said she did not want her role to be “judgmental” and instead encouraged critics to use the ABC’s internal complaints system or switch the channel.

I recall the "Mediscare" texts on the morning of the 2016 election. Must be ok when Labor is doing it?

What about the continuous lies Labor have been spreading for years, scaring pensioners that the Coalition was planning to force them onto the cashless Welfare card, and also falsely claiming that Medicare would be privatised. The member for Richmond, on the far north coast, had been advertising this for the last six years. This area has the highest percentage of pensioners in Australia. Labor has also had Getup, their left wing support group, appear at polling booths on election day spreading this information. You can Google  Julian Hill MP,  Federal Member for Bruce, regarding cashless pension card.

I totally disagree with Horace Cope's statement to forget the past. Certainly there is a lot that Morrison and his disciples would like the electorate to forget but as has been pointed out by much wiser people than me that to forget the past leads to making the same mistakes in the future.

The reporting of  turning back  that boat during election day showed a distinct lack of ethical behaviour and was driven by a desperate grab at staying in power. Morrison in the past had always said that he did not comment on things happening on the water as it exposed RAN personnel to danger. As a self proclaimed Christian he has always ignored the 9th commandment which clearly prohibits bearing false witness.

Nah, I totally agree with Horace Cope.  You may have a different definition of ethics, but that is your concern. Where were  the ALP's "ethics" at the 2016 election with their mediscare texts on election day, or their lies about the cashless welfare care. Talk about ignoring the 9th commandment ,  (not that I believe in any of the religions preachings).

I read Cope's post and I don't believe he said to forget the past. I think what he is saying is that Labor has more important things to do such as running the country. He is saying that one matter has been addressed and the other has not broken any rules.

I look forward to the day when Whining Willie and the Muppets with backing by the 3 Cs disappear!
