pensions

The pollies will keep on hitting us over the head with this $500 bonus payment - which can be taken away anytime they like. Lets forget about bonus payments and concentrate on a weekly rise of at least $100. And a decent indexation each year. Lets not give the pollies, both parties, a chance to use the bonus against us every year.

Im not quite on the pension yet, but Tessata I think you could have been lucky this time getting the $500.

Its my opinion that if young Kev wasnt so quick with the meetoo, meetoo prior to the last election and wanted to look like he even cared, you would have surely missed out. As you may still do next time.

Hooley Dooley! a hundred bucks a week! WOW I wonder what that would do to the economy/inflation?

Might I suggest about a quarter of what you suggest?

B FRANK you obviously must be one of the fortunate ones who are self sufficient and live quite well and not as many living below the poverty line.We till 1980 thought we had quite adequate insurance, but unfortunately in those days STROKES were not so high profile as they are today ,Only wish it had been.

.At 40 years of age with 2 children at high school, and insured we thought quite well my husband suffered a massive stroke, which hospitalised him for 6 months where he had to learn how to walk again and cope with partial paralysis on the left side unable to use his left arm and severe weakness in the left leg, and short term memory loss. Now we thought we were insured for all of this should it occur, and we were absolutely devastated when we discovered that the policy in very very small print read this way (This being insurance for $250,000)

"Loss of ,and not loss of use of , would have been better off if he had chopped the arm off "

It took my husband 3 years after that to be granted a pension even though he could not work anymore,he was medically unfit, all Centrelink at that time could say was "Spend all your savings and then come back and see us",three years later we did.

So don't get on your high horse criticizing people when you have no idea of their predicament , as we only survive now on the pension by paying all our bills fortnightly, along with the fact there are 2 of us,but should one of us pass on there is definately no way either of us could survive on the pension.

Don't shoot me down in flames but it seems that those who are on the pension who own their own homes do a lot better than those who don't. I have a single pensioner relative who runs a car, pays private health insurance, eats well, and was able to take a short overseas holiday this year. I am not saying she is on easy street or does not have to budget, but in no way is she starving.

I am on the carers pension, have my own home but don't run a car. I care for my dad who is a self-funded retiree, but I pay for most of his food, toiletries etc out of my money. He doesn't understand such things any more and would think probably $5 a week would see him right, so I don't ask him for anything.I manage ok and can afford the odd bottle of good wine.

I am just commenting that not all pensioners are eating leftover scrapings from dumpsters.....

"So don’t get on your high horse criticizing people when you have no idea of their predicament "

Excuse me Mumsbemee!

You couldn't be further from fact about how I live, its just that I dont complain about it. There was not one word of criticism in my post, it was MY opinion, which I thought we were free to express here.

If you re-read my post you will quickly see I said pensioners were (I think) lucky this time receiving the $500. However they might not be next time --- if this government ignores pensioners as it has done thus far.

In a jocular way, I replied to Tessata's suggestion of a $100 increase in the pension / WEEK, I asked what it would do to the economy. Apart from not being affordable can you imagine what government fees and charges would go through the roof to pay for such a massive instant hike? Anyone with a modicum of simple economics would see the problems it would create. That's why I suggested a smaller increase.

So to slam me for your unfortunate state of affairs is uncalled for.

I apologize B Frank for taking your comment out of context, hopefully it will be accepted, and I am definately not seeking pity or the like for our current position,we have always said that there will always be someone worse off than us.Still it is interesting though to have found this article on the net from Tokes..Well worth a read.

"

It is interesting that the federal government provides a single

refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890.00 and each can also get

an additional $580.00 in social assistance for a total of

$2,470.00.

A single pensioner who, after contributing to the growth and

development of Australia for 40 to 50 years, receives only a

monthly maximum of $1,012.00 in old age pension and Guaranteed

Income Supplement.

Maybe our pensioners should apply as refugees!

Let's send this to all Australians so we can all be ticked off and

maybe we can get the refugees cut back to $1,012.00 and the

pensioners up to $2,470.00 and enjoy some of the money we were

forced to submit to the Government over the last 40 or 50 years.

Please forward to every Australian to expose what our elected

politicians are doing - to the over-taxed Australian

Once again my apologies.

These figures appear to be from an email which originated in America, and is circulating around the world.

It has been shown to be false according to Snopes.

If I can find the article, I will post the link.

Yes, that email is a hoax email and has been going round the ridges for some time - like many others, designed to annoy or scare. If you receive an email like this, or purporting to be from some govt body or in one instance, the police - delete them immediately. If there was a serious issue to be brought to the attention of the public,it would not be via email for goodness sake!

I have now reached a point where I totally ignore and delete any of these kinds of emails that are fwded by well meaning people.

Hi KoKo,

Thats "snopes" site is quite interesting and well worth looking at just to quash a few silly rumours that one comes across in every day life. Well done for posting it.

I often wonder where Snopes get there info from--and if it IS correct ?--How can we be sure ? But then I AM cynical

On a single aged pension, I'm coping, but only just. Live in a country area, with no public transport, so have to have a car - such as it is. I dread the day my fridge or washing machine packs it in. Just so glad that I learnt how to cook from my mum during the food rationing years. That's held me in good stead.

Plan B - I believe Snopes research all the hoaxes and scams extensively.

The real point is - if there was some problem that would affect lots of people adversely, it would be publicised in the media. It would not be sent from individual to individual via email. Many of the hoaxes involve supposed computer viruses. If a real virus threat exists, it is made public and you can read about it in the news.It is ludicrous to think that internet providers would advise people by chain emails!

If you get an email that is warning you about anything, delete it and break the chain.

Yes I do that--I never pass these on either
