Part-time jobs for over 50's

Hi everyone, just lamenting the lack of part-time jobs for us over 50's...if anyone has a happy story or any success stories about this, I'd love to hear from you. Is it as hard as I think it is? A friend has been applying/looking for 6 years now and myself for 2 years, is there anyone willing to give us a go?

Congratulations on getting your Father into an Aged Care Facility Jacinta as I remember reading all about how difficult it all was for you.

You can advertise your services for whatever it is you are good at doing and go from there

I look after people's homes and their animals and gardens to a big degree. I baby sit

and I have many homes I go to with elderly folk living in them and take pets for walks and do shopping. I also Proof Read and I can type at a good speed so get temp. work.

Advertise yourself and do not be prepared to wait for work to come to you go out and sell yourself and your attributes re what you can, do, and be a willing worker and you will succeed. Yes I agree not driving is very limiting but not defeating. You have said (I think it was you) you like to travel so you can go live away as I think your Dad supported you? You will find without this, it is more expensive to live, but working sure helps :) and as I keep saying I have more work than I can handle and maybe if you let me know where you are, I could help you find work.

Anyway now you do not have to do those jobs you found so difficult with your Dad you will be a lot more content and feel like getting out and working.

Good luck with it all and God bless your Dad also. I pray he finds the home wonderful and the people caring for him kind, gentle and considerate and above all respectful.

Korry - yes, I know the kind of work you mean, and indeed several years ago when I was retrenched I tried the same thing - but in Brisbane there is a huge glut of people offering the same service, and without reliable transport it is indeed very difficult. I have a friend who was doing house cleaning but after the money market crash she has lost all her clients, people now can't afford to pay for such services. That's just the situation in Brisbane, it may be different where you are. The proof reading thing puzzles me as there is spellcheck now - where do you get proof-reading work from?

I must correct you on an important point - my Dad never, ever supported me!!!! I worked all my life from my early teens, and only gave up my job because Dad needed lots of home care and refused to go into a nursing home at that stage.I took a huge drop in income going onto the Carers payment.

Now I still have to manage and maintain his property which is two homes on three allotments - tied up in his will, it cannot be sold until after his decease. So I have to do a lot of work here, the only concession is that I have just today engaged the services of a mower man. The houses have to be kept in reasonable condition so I have to deal with all the tradies and ongoing work, and thre are roughly 100+shrubs to be pruned, at a conservative estimate.

So what with all that and looking for some part-time work, I will be pretty busy.

P.S. - Dad is not a happy chappy at the moment and abused the cr@p out of me today, LOL, but they say it gets better.

Oh, more questions for you Korry - when doing these odd jobs to support yourself , and having to report your income to Centrelink - they ask for your employers ABN - how do you get past that; and do you get group certificates to present to the taxman? These things are necessary and I am not sure how you would have them if you are doing odd jobs here and there.I would really like to know.

To get myself off the unemployment benefit completely I would need to earn at least $250 - $300 a week, and to keep myself afloat and pay my bills - can you make enough money to completely support yourself this way? I am not eligible for the pension for 7 years.
