Over seas holiday declaration.

Male here aged 66 retired.
Centrelink contribute only 30% of my income...............the rest is my own super fund pensions.
I am going over to Europe next year for 5 weeks.
Should I tell centrelink?
Would they even know?
Why to they want to know?
Is it their bloody business at all?

If they do not leave me alone I will cash in my super and blow all of it on new toys and trips to then totally rely on a full pension from them.

I think I would tell them - I believe they reduce the amount of supplement you receive while you are overseas, even for a short time. If you don't tell them, you may incur a bill which has to be repaid.

Thats good advice Bev............."..and yes it is their business considering that they do pay you some Pension "

I expect that in such a circustance as this that they would means test you again and maybe make you wait a while for any extra pension

..

In any event I would not act too hastily

:P

you do need to let them know, I went to UK last year and had to tell then when I left ad ring them when I was back in Aus.

you lose pharmacuticals I think that was all

cheers and have a nice holiday

by the way I was away for 3 months

Yes, you do have to notify Centrelink of your departure and return. If you are delayed or decide to stay longer they also need to know.

Apparently they are in touch with Customs so know when you are going and returning anyhow. I was told this a couple of trips ago when informing them of my departure at the time.

Seems nothing is private anymore.

They do suggest that you notify them but nobody actually does - be real!!! They haven't got time for that and you would only be a nuisance. My pensioner relatives have taken numerous overseas holidays and never mentioned it.There is no way Centrelink would ever know about it! And no, they are not in touch with Customs. They haven't got time for that either. You have to realise that Centrelink are like any other dept, understaffed, and no way could they keep track of all that.

Take your holiday and enjoy it.

of course you must tell centrelink, the rubbish that this person has written is all incorrect,

only a complete fool would not tell centrelink that you were not leaving australian shores for any period of time

if you do not tell centrelink that you are leaving australia it will cause all sorts of problems upon your return including rental assistance you were intitled to recieve from centrelink, yes they do have a notifaction agreement with (not customs but) Immergrasion as i know this from past experience,

Hi,

Just a quick heads up for future reference, In legislation etc you do need to notify however they do have a link with Immigration which tells them when you leave ----- the part that is important to pensioners is that sometimes when you come back that fact isn't as successfully matched meaning that your pension card won't work or your pension would be lowered if we don't advise

So advising you're leaving is not as important as advising you've returned.

Also; They wont' touch the rate of age pension for either 3 or 6 months depending on how long you've lived in Australia.
