Might be worth waiting for Windows 7 (late 2009?) slide show here:

Windows 7 will more likely be 2010 (at the earliest) and there is a lot of doubt as to whether or not any of the screen shots in the slide show are real.

Cheers

At this stage dont consider Vista at all XP Professional is by far the best OS at this time. I sacked Vista and had XP Pro installed and everything I had from my old software was easy to install. One site that has really gone into it www.mmww.wordpress.com.........Moans Groans Whines and Whinges.

Hey, all. After struggling on a very slow dialup connection way way out here in the bush with XP and, unfortunately Windows I treated myself to a new Toshiba confuser running Vista and I loaded Firefox into and have never looked back!!! I LOVE MY VISTA AND FIREFOX. And I am very much an amatuer. [amateur?] I also have just bought an Eeepc [7 inch] for data entry with my work. Ripper little machine. It runs Linux. Linux rules. You would never go back to the pathetic Windows after using Linux.

I call into sandfire twice a year, going to the Broome races and coming home from there, hope to make your aquaintance if I go this year. Take care of those peacocks/hens whatever. BTW Bill Gates will love you for your blog.

Hey, westozzy. Want some peacocks? You take about 78 & just leave a couple! Noisy screeching things they are. Call in for sure. Just ask for the ambulance bloke. Hooroo K

I have Vista on my new laptop and, as was so rightly pointed out, very few of my old programs were compatible. I can't afford to replace them, so I have kept my desktop to run programs like Adobe Audition, which I use for converting vinyl records to CD. I was advised only yesterday that Microsoft have had so many complaints about Vista that it will not be supported within two years (probably when windows 2009 is released. I am going to reformat my lap top and load XP.

I think it is criminal that Microsoft can sell a system with so many faults, then just wipe it. Just shows what you can get away with if you're so rich that the people who made you rich don't matter anymore.

Well I ended up getting a Dell Desk top--with Vista--my friend got a Dell Laptop with XP--I like them both and find both easy to use--my camera and Printer Scanner work fine on the Vista--I am very happy with it--I downloaded Firefox and use that and also got rid of Adobe and downloaded foxit. I am also now on BB

I had to upgrade from the 98se as nothing was supporting it anymore--even though the computer was still working fine.

Hi PlanB,

Maybe Vista got WORSE reviews THAN IT DESERVED...because Microsoft and Manufacturers of Computer mother boards colluded a few years back to sell off remaining 512GB of RAM computers .

The computers stalled and CRASHED because ONCE THEY WERE LOADED WITH VISTA THERE WAS ROOM FOR NOTHING ELSE... THE LANGUAGE USED TO DESCRIBE THE 512GB RAM MACHINES WAS DELIBERATELY MEANT TO MISLEAD CUSTOMERS

THEY WERE CALLED "VISTA CAPABLE" YES VISTA CAPABLE !! BUT NOT CAPABLE OF RUNNING ANYTHING ELSE! ONCE VISTA HOME BASIC WAS LOADED!

LINK PROVIDED SHOWS JUST SOME OF THE INFO AVAILABLE ABOUT HOW MICROSOFT AND COMPUTER MANUFACTURERS MISLED PEOPLE INTO BUYING USELESS 512GB RAM COMPUTERS,

SEVERAL OF MY FRIENDS BOUGHT 512GB COMPUTERS AROUND THIS TIME APPROX 3 YEARS AGO... THEY WERE ABLE TO TAKE THEM BACK AND HAVE THEM UPGRADED TO 2GB/4GB RAM AT NO COST AFTER COMPLAINTS TO DEPT FAIR TRADING AND COMPUTER MANUFACTURERS ALONG WITH RETAIL OUTLETS...

http://www.betanews.com/article/Class-Action-Lawsuit-Claims-Vista-Capable-is-Misleading/1175634465

there is a mountain of info about the need for a VERY minimum of 2 GB RAM to run Vista HOME BASIC but the way to go is 4GB Ram and Vista Ultimate..THE FULL VERSION OF VISTA.

Microsoft is working on releasing another OS called Windows 7...

IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT WINDOWS 7 IS ALL ABOUT..

I HAVE BEEN USING VISTA ON A 4GB RAM COMPUTER FOR SOME TIME NOW WITH NO ISSUES. EXCEPT HAVING TO BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT COMPATIBILITY ISSUES. WHEN ADDING A NON MICROSOFT PROGRAME

I THINK IT IS MICROSOFT'S PLAN TO MAKE THE OPERATING SYSTEMS COMPLETELY DEPENDENT ON PURCHASING ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE EXCLUSIVELY FROM MICROSOFT.

Oh yes Vista takes up quite deal of room on the computer

Re Vista. The initial Vista concerns should be addressed by now, however most new computers are purchased with Vista Home or Professional installed.

I am told that Microsoft will release a new operating system late 09 which will address many of the Vista issues and user concerns. This will be called Windows 7, and will be both Vista compatible as well as XP compatible.

I am keen to update my current desktop system but will wait until the new windows system is available.

I hope to save enough sometime to get an apple mac, Im sick of Bill Gates and his annual Operating System updates, we are just guinea pigs for his developers. Ive had enough.

whetozzy, I hope you get your apple mac, You are right about Microsoft, their operating systems are becoming more and more incompatible with other non Microsoft programs, the aim is to make computers wholly dependent on buying Microsoft! I would like to study the Linux operating system.. its free ....

http://www.linux.org/

Chick I have read very good reports on Linux and Ibuntu and as you say everything is free. I just havent enough knowledge of partitioning to run both or all on my computer but Ive never read a Linux complaint yet. I guess mainly because its such a minority market.
