Oops, Proper English indeed.

I would just like to say how refreshing it is to communicate in a familiar spelling forum.
Browsing the websites I found I could barely understand what they were saying because of the spelling. I realise texting is a language all it's own but surely we can keep the English language alive. Even the spell checker can't spell on some sites.
I also add grammar to this observation, I admit my own can be a bit rusty sometimes but at least I can understand myself.

I dont have a problem with how people write, as long as I can understand what they are saying. We all make spelling mistakes, grammatical errors or just simply hit a wrong key from time to time.

What does annoy me, is would be "teachers" correcting their peers, I consider that just rude. An especial annoyance (for me, at least) is our American brethren who "correct" english errors when (again, in my opinion) they speak a VERSION of the language that has become adulterated, abridged and is now considerably different to what most of us consider the "mother tongue"

Fortunately, we dont have this problem on this forum and the few Yanks that post here seem nice, friendly people. The young ones on many fora seem to use that irritating and virtually indecipherable "shorthand" that has emerged with the explosion of "texting" on mobile phones.

Of course, there is another possible explanation for my annoyance........ maybe I am just getting OLD.

Grammar and spelling do seem to be considered old fashioned now. Such a pity, as we have a beautiful language, albeit sometimes a bit confusing to others.

eg: tough

bough

cough :)

One of the reasons I enjoy some English programs is the sheer joy of hearing English spoken correctly.

Maybe I am just getting old too. ;-) But i would still like to see grammar, spelling and pronunciation high on the school agenda.

One of my pet grumps is the disappearance of 'brought'. The word 'bought is now used for the past tense of 'bring'.

Our youth is losing their pronunciation skills.......simple words like "water" is often pronounced "worta" and "jewelry" is pronounced joolaree etc., etc. Very sad really.....
