One of my many hobbies.

Good one Davey.

I like the biplane in particular. Cannot say I have seen a Stampe in the flesh. I assume it is a Stampe from the writing.

The only biplanes I have flown in was a Tiger and Beech Staggerwing. Worked on both way back.

There is a fairly active Modelling group down our way. Not involved myself but do not mind a look from time to time.

Take it easy.

Combat model which is cheap and very nippy

Davey,

What size are these models?

Do they have to adhere to a specific size?

They look so real :)

So does Davey!!

Seriously, they're great models, my grandson is just taking an interest and would love to get his hand on those!

Are you too old Ray ?

My reactions are still A1

Grandson want to play with big boys toys? These are not for kids and our youngest member is 18 but normally at about that age they develope an interest in girls or boys if they are bent. They move on.

My son left at 18 to join the army as a chopper techo.....now stationed at Townsville.

Well Davey doubt whether my grandson will want to play with big boys' toys, think this little guy is aiming on building the real thing! At age 7 he built his first model airplane (wood) always been interested in anything to do with flying, he did his HSC a year ago and is bent on aerospace engineering, has the brains for it too!! Taking flying lessons at the moment. His goal was even more cemented when after his HSC his parents took him on a holiday to UK and elsewhere and in the UK he had the opportunity to meet with one of his heroes Richard Branson at a charity event. Already proud of him and think will be even more so in the future!

As for me,too taken up with my sport, golf, riding, cricket, want to keep pursuing these until the bones start creaking, then might seek out something more sedentary..

Ray,

It is great when a young person has made a decision about his future based on an apparent passion and has the aptitude to follow through.

Good luck to him.

Davey,

i knew a few blokes from an aero modelling club in another area who had one bloke, who was obviously the club ace, do all initial flying on their planes.

Really had to be on top of the game I gather.

Not a childs hobby.

I knew another bloke, an avid modeller, who obtained his PPL but gave the PPL away and went back to modelling, reckoned flying a C172 was really boring as compared to modelling.

Something I would have liked to have had a go at but was rather well occupied elsewhere.

Take it easy.

You are right a new model has to be trimmed correctly and adjusted to fly straight and level at half throttle. Most get the the club instructor to do this but after a lifetime in the hobby I mostly do it myself.

Some fly mode one and others prefer mode two ( throttle right or left)

Do many of the members also fly quadcopters?

Is it similar to control one ?

Yes Abby many have them....we call them drones and they can carry cameras /videos or a fishing sinker out to sea.

Some have six props or even eight.

They have GPS and can hover outside your bedroom window transmitting pictures  back to a smart phone. Press return to base and it flies back on it's own.

Wasn't there some problem during the NSW bushfires with people flying drones across the flight paths of water carriers?

I will have to buy one ... think I could have tons of fun with one :)

I prefer to fly very nippy planes doing insane aerobatics or a graceful glider working the thermals.

They're awesome!

I was at the AirShow a couple of years ago and there was a model airplane flying club there – some of the planes look as if they could fit a small child inside!

I also have a bunch of guys that head to a park near me and they race smaller palnes and helicopters. Looks as though they have small cameras attached to the planes/copters and they have screens mounted on their controllers. I think they must race by looking at the screens, kind of like a video game really? Would that be right?

I've got some photos of the AirShow planes somewhere. I'll see if I can dig 'em up and post them. Some of them were amazing.

Look on U tube for drone racing.

You will get a video clip of pensioners doing the hundred yard dash ..

No that's crone racing

Leon ... found them yet ???

I spent an hour yesterday looking through my digital photo library and couldn't find them. I may have to go through a backup or two to locate them. May take some time but I do hope to find them somewhere.

Great looking planes,an expensive hobby but loooks like fun.I like woodwork and make lots of objects of art(smile) in my garage.

Hi Banjo, hard finding something "male" to reply to these days. Like working with wood too, took this up a couple of years ago and at the moment building a very special bookcase for my wife. Not the usual run of the mill ones, this one has drawers on the side. An old Dutch design. One day she'll see the finished product!

Cheers

Hi Ray, your project sounds a bit more complicated. I dont know how to put pictures up here from camera, but I found this on the internet, gives a

good idea of a table I made recently, for use in the family room.It holds masses of stuff. Cheers Image result for simple woodworking projects

Hey Banjo, that table is great, you've got some talent mate. Got some nice jarrah for the bookcase I'm making, if I get into difficulties will be calling on you!

Cheers,enjoy your Sunday

Thanks Ray, nice to see your bookcase when finished.

Haven't got another project in mind yet,but the wife keeps hinting at a sewing box, might do that for her Christmas present.

Sorry about intruding on your male run, but I just had to pop in and tell you...I have a wonderful friend who was a Quantas pilot..He was injured in a crash, retired early ,was bored and decided to build his own plane...I have watched him start from scratch, even to the point of running around trying to find an old cane bath chair...The day came last christmas when his project was completed..and it was for many reasons, a very emotional affair as he climbed into the seat, buckled up and we watched his Sopwith Snipe 1918 take off into the sky on her maiden voyage....Unbelievable...

I'll take off now ...lolol

That's a great story Cranky, yes I could imagine how emotional that

would have been.Would have moved me too, thanks for telling it.Cheers

what an achievment cranky - good story
