Oils ain't Oils

The Australian olive oil industry is taking a stand against international oils falsely masquerading as "extra virgin", developing the world's first code of practice for producers.

In Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) tests late last year, three samples of international olive oil were found to be falsely labelled "extra virgin".

These olive oils - IGA's Isabella Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Paese Mio Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil sold by Coles, and Aigeon Extra Virgin Olive Oil sold by delicatessens - had been able to get away with the deception because Australia has not been consistently testing for authenticity.

The Australian Olive Association's president, Paul Miller, says the local industry is taking a stand.

To be certified, products must be Australian and undergo organoleptic (taste) and chemical testings. The certified products will be labelled as such.

Trollpaste,

Three years ago this was called news.

Keep up your good work.

Thank you Clay, good to hear that our oil industry is taking a stand and make us aware of false advertising.

You'd think that supermarket buyers would would get a legally binding statement from the sellers that it is what they claim it to be. Glad to hear Coles will abide by the ruling as they have their own brand of extra virgin.

I was surprised when my daughter told me how nice European olive oil is - she had no problem taking it by a spoon ?.. something I could not even contemplate no matter how 'nice' it is**

You are welcome mara ...............I like to buy local produce even if it means that I pay a bit more ................clay

I've only ever used 2 overseas producers.

They are top quality, and I love the flavours. As I use a lot, both in salads and in cooking, I buy the 4 litre tins, and only when on special.

If the Australian brands can compete with those sale prices I'd be willing to have a look.

So I'll check them out next time I run low.

We have a local oil made not 20 miles away by a young family firm and it retails at $ 20 per 2 litres ..............I am not too sure if this a cheap price but its tasts beaut

Thanks for that Clay--I had heard of this but I don't think the brands were mentioned--I have been buying Aussie on for awhile now

The two I use...actually mainly only one more recently as it's on special quite often.....retail at over $50.00 normal price for a 4 litre tin.

When on special, can sometimes go down to $21.00 or $23.00 per 4itrel tin. Hard to beat, really.

Can anyone actually 'taste' canola oil?

I bought top brand mayonaise the other day. It had that dead taste about it.

My daughter read the ingredients and presto! canola oil.

There are links on the net saying that canola is not good for health.

Mara, I've never used Canola, but do recall hearing adverse stories about it, quite a while ago.

Quite a lot of it is GM modified--as is a lot of our food now
