No ID no vote law on deck for the next federal election 'a solution in search of a problem'

If you want to vote at the next federal election, you'll need to show ID, should proposed laws be approved in Parliament.

The controversial legislation, expected to be introduced on Thursday aims to prevent people from voting multiple times or under false identities.

The no ID no vote law would require voters to present identification ranging from driver’s licenses and Medicare cards to letters from government agencies, power bills or bank statements, in order to vote.

No ID? You would still be able to vote should another person with ID vouch for you.

Voters who couldn't identify themselves would be allowed to cast a “declaration vote” where enrolment details are checked by polling officials after the fact.

Committee chair James McGrath says the “sanctity of the electoral roll and the importance of each citizen equally exercising equally one vote” were vital to making sure elections were fair.

However, Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said the AEC was already satisfied with existing measures to prevent voter fraud and described the problem as “vanishingly small”.

The new laws would have to pass Parliament within the next two weeks to be introduced in time for the next federal election due to be held by May.

Labor, so far, opposes the laws, saying they are “unnecessary and burdensome”.

“The government’s plans would not only see a return to long queues at polling booths, but also disenfranchise vulnerable Australians by preventing them from exercising their democratic right to vote,”  said shadow special minister of state Don Farrell.

Greens deputy leader Larissa Waters said voter ID laws were “a solution in search of a problem”.

What do you think of the proposed laws?

so if two people with the same name from the same address?? if one wanted to vote but the other didn't  they could  vote  using the wrong name but the right ID ?? ??

Yet another act of bastardry from this far-right government. All aimed at disenfranchising indigenous, disadvantaged and the elderly. Who do you trust? Not Morrison, not Barnaby, not any of this mob. Just wish the other mob were a whole lot better (Obeid, Macdonald, et al).

Your comment, "aimed at disenfranchising indigenous, disadvantaged and the elderly " needs some explaining as to how that would happen. I note that those exact same words were used by a Labor spokesperson, also without clarification. Interestingly, Labor has chosen to oppose this proposed legislation without reading what is actually proposed.

I do agree we should show some sort of ID.   It is far too easy to say any surname or even an unusual surname ..  run down the list and agree that one is you ...  Okaaay ..    Why am I required to carry my drivers licence when driving but am not required to show ID when legally being required to vote?   This is just supporting being professional.  It is not Big Brother.

Fraudulent voting has never been a problem in this country so why introduce this now? There is no valid reason for it so one has to assume Morrison is chanelling Trump with this right wing attempt to get an edge at the upcoming election.

That would be the only reason for this and it will add to the cost of the election as it will likely involve having to employ more people at the polling booths.

It would get much greater support from the voting public to introduce laws making political advertising truthful.

Tom, I'm not sure how this would give an edge to the Coalition.  Remember that it was the mantra of the union movement to "vote early and vote often" with reports of busloads of union members being taken around the Polling booths in some "marginal" seats in both  the local and State elections in Queensland in the 1980's.

However as this would only have an effect if the margin was down to only a hundred or so seats and has been shown through many elections now, the ALP don't have to have been then around 32% of the primary vote as they harvest the Greens preferences.

In the US, where voting is optional, it has been found in California that there have been thousands more votes cast in some Counties than are registered to vote there.

Your point about making political advertising honest could have an interesting effect as usually the biggest fibs come from the Greens and the ALP. It is an independent who got elected on her climate alarm claims which are largely unproven and in some cases very wrong who is seeking to table a Bill to follow the truth in advertising for future elections.

This reminds me of the oft-thought about Australia ID card which you could use for Medicare, Tax, Centrelink, etc. and it had your photo on it.  Bring this in, and everybody, especially the disadvantaged and aged who don't have driver licences nor the 18+ photo card, or a passport, would be brought back into the fold and every one would have the same information for life.  The cards can be renewed every 5 years on your 0 or 5 birthday (so there's no reason to forget it).

It's not an invasion of privacy, nor 'big brother' looking in on you.  To me it just makes sense.  Then when you're voting, you only need to provide your Australia ID card.

This always made sense to me too SuziJ.

Some years back we received an ID slip from the AEC for a state election and when we presented it at the voting station, the person marked us off in a very short time. No repeating names, address, initials as mostly happens to mark us off and that belies the objection of slowing down the voting process.

I like this idea.

Sue, I agree. I voted in that election and I saw no-one foaming at the mouth about being disavantaged.

Couldn't people go to more than Booth unless it had to have photo ID same as they do now?

The current process whereby an individual's name is crossed off the electoral roll in the polling station is subject to abuse because there is no certainty that the person presenting at the polling station is actually the listed elector. Therefore proof of identity would be a benefit. It therefore follows that if proof of ID is introduced at polling stations; then postal voting will have to be discontinued because there is no guarantee that the sender of the postal vote, which would include a copy of the voter's ID, is actually the voter.

For me internet voting is the way to go.

Suze, unfortunately the internet can be a wide open target if not set up securely.  More though that the Register should be connected so that once voted, it is recorded (or at least, attended to vote).

It is the possible hacking that is subject to ongoing examination in the USA.   A "good" hacker knows how to hide their tracks so very well that their hack will actually report back that the hack didn't really happen.

If even your local coffee chop can have portable point of sale communication that they can bring to you at your table, similar systems can be used to confirm attendance at a Polling Booth.

The government could use QR code as they do in Covid contact tracing

ID required for voting? Oh my God, where are our freedoms going? I feel so violated by this possible new law.

Next thing, these politicians will be requiring ID for men working with children. Imagine that!!

Or require ID to enter our country. Shocking!

Or require ID to buy a house. Ridiculous!

Or require ID to become a doctor or a policeman. Silly!

Gee, there goes our freedoms. Next on the list,  these politicians will be insisting that we wear seat belts and drive on the left side of the road. Or worse still ....... instigate Communist style "penalties" for those drivers who don't submit and conform. Oh dear.

Our freedoms are lost. Our nation is doomed. Ohhhhhhh woe is us. And now we have the most evil of all laws proposed, that we show ID before voting. Oh Lordy me.

Where's Donald???? We need Donald Trump to migrate to Australia and save us.

Ha ha, they're working on it in the good ol' US of A.  They're holding protest marches chanting 'SAVE AUSTRALIA'.  It's just anti-vaxxers at the moment, but who knows how far it will go. LOL

New Yorkers against a vaccine mandate wave Australian flags at a protest on Monday (local time).

My son works in Retirement Villages and has to have a  photo Police ID to say he has been checked for any violations. The other son has to have a photo ID from  RMS to say he doesn't have any issues working with young people. I'm all for photo ID's for Voting.

Yes Hola I think Australia is too lax with security like that.

Not long ago to be a house cleaner in Perth the women needed to have a Police Clearance, but these days they seem to turn their noses up at that.    I think it is very much needed to have a Police Clearance working in a persons home, all the trust seems to be on the person who owns the home.

A cleaner can help themselves to anything!

I also think a cleaner should have a double Jab too.

What a lot of gooblygook from the Government faaaar Right!

Sounds like they have been watching too much of Trumps ideas to me.

Those that wish to have a legal vote at the Federal Election in 2025 should produce a current Australian Pass Port, that will cover many evils!  In other words a Federal ID.

I really don't think having a Medicare Card is good enough!

Everyone and their dog can have a Medicare card.

The only question that is asked when we go to vote is

Have you voted elsewhere today?

How does one tell who is honest and who is voting three or four times?

All the system allows for at the moment is a black line over our names and addresses so we could all turn up at any Polling Station and nobody will be the wiser unless we have something more substantial to prove who we are.
