Nick Kyrgios: the great Aussie hope for Australian Open title

nick kyrgios

The Australian Open begins today and, as 'precocious' a player and personality Nick Kyrgios is, he's still the great Aussie hope to win the title.

When Roger Federer was asked if Kyrgios could do it, he said the the young Australian would be "tough to beat", but whether he could make a run at the title, he answered

"To win, he drops, in my humble opinion. To do anything, yes, first week no problem, but to go all the way it's a long way, and he's never been into a semis before, so first he has to prove to the world and himself that he can make the semis.

"So for me to start talking about him winning the tournament, Lleyton [Hewitt] never did it, and he was two times world No.1 at the end of the year. So I know [Kyrgios] has got a big game, but he has to beat four, five amazing players. Can he do that right now? I'm not sure. He can beat them, but not back to back to back to back to back, maybe. But I'm happy if he proves me wrong."

Do you think Nick Kyrgios could take the title? Will you be barracking for him? Or has he done his dash in your eyes?

There is no denying that Kyrgios has talent for the game, but his petulent, childish and abrasive attitude often lets him down. While I admire his talent, as a person, I find him difficult to support. He is not a good role model for our younger generation. He is a good tennis player and if he ever grows up, he may become a GREAT tennis player.

Can Kyrgios make it?  Unlikely.  The guy's is a spoilt brat who throws temper tantrums when things do not go his way and acts badly even when they do.

I wish Aussie sportspeople the best of luck but this guy leaves me cold.  Better to get a day job rather than drag the national reputation further into the gutter than he already has.

Kyrgios is a loser and could do worse than getting himself a mentor like John Newcombe who did us all proud.

Totally agree with all you  say 'kfchugo'   - be  good to see him grow up

sooner rather than later - he does have the talent, and we need a new GREAT

in tennis.   Having said al lthat he does very much annoy me at present, so

find him difficult to watch

Perhaps there should be updated 'rules' about the age at which any sportsperson should be on the 'world stage' of their sport. As the players get younger, so does their maturity and ability to cope with the pressures of being an elite sportsperson. Perhaps we are asking too much of these children to behave like seasoned professionals with a more adult brain.

This is not to hand Master Kyrgios any more excuses but rather an admonishment of Tennis Australia that allows these entitled and petulant children to play in adult tournaments on the world's playing courts.

I am an Aussie through and through, but I am ashamed to call (N) ick Kyrgios one!

kfchugo has said it all.

Kyrgios could win. Probably won't. That will becasue of attitude. And he's an appalling role model.

I wouldn't call him the great Aussie hope, rather the great Aussie dope.

Kyrgios impressed me when he played mixed doubles in the Hopman. His partner let him down completely yet he stayed cool & supportive to the finish of the game.

I will most certainly be "barracking" for Nick...hope he wins because I admire his tennis skill...

I cannot understand why people look towards others in the public arena as "role models"...surely one should look towards parents..guardians and educators for this...

I don't condone his behaviour...but I tend to look beyond that and feel proud we have such talented Australian sports people in our midst...

My goodness...as for being a "brat"...there are people three times his age who are brats...at least he has time to grow out of it...

Good luck Nick...

Of course he's a role model. He makes money becasue people come to watch him and watch him on TV.

Next time you chat with a kid who's a tennis fan, ask them if they see Roger Federer's teachers or parents as role models.

That's the problem with Australians and sport in Australia Thea. People 'forgive' anything including appalling (and even criminal) behaviour provided the perpetrator is good at their sport.

KSS... has Nick done anything "criminal?"  I wasn't aware of that...

Read again Thea, my comment is about sportspeople (well mostly sportsMEN if I am honest) in general, I do not even mention Master Kyrgios.

As far as Master Kyrgios goes, people will forgive his juvenile tantrums, innapropriate commentary, lack of application, sense of entitlement and other such behaviour as long as he is winning.

True...but the topic is about Nick and I wanted to know what unforgivable crime he had committed...

I keep a tight ship in my family and no one has ever been incarcerated for anything illegal..maybe a speeding fine and had to pay at the most $100..

But I am wondering how many of Nick's knockers have done something illegal when they were young and later on in life....

It's easy to knock someone in the public eye...whilst keeping one's vices hidden...

Roger Federer has urged critics to lay off Nick Kyrgios, saying the Australian has the talent to be a Hall of Famer. "I think he's one of the biggest talents we have in the game right now and I just hope he can make the most of it with what he has and become a future Hall of Famer."

Sorry Thea

nick has committed a crime

Suspended fined and asked to do somcounselling for a crime of sport NOTTRYING

no greater crime other than betting!

You obviously have no children and accept any sort of behaviours from ill mannered and Foul mouthed children.

Wake up to yourself as an adult  support him but don't trivialise his faults

Roger saying that is irrelevant to your argument. Andy Murray has been his greatest support anyway.

Raise your own standards and that if the sport!

"Sorry Thea"..

don't be sorry Captain...we are all entitled to our opinions of people whether we know anything about them or not...

whether we know their values or not...

whether we know for sure they have children and grand children or not

and whether or not they have high standards or not...

Now that you've got me all "solvered"...how about telling us about yourself..but no.. please don't bother...I have just formed my opinion from the nonsense you have just written...

I also glean that you don't believe in giving our young people second chances...very sad...

Bye and have a good day....

Hey Captain, do you know why "not trying" is a crime in tennis (and many other sports)?

It's all because of gambling.

And total disrespect for the opponent Barak.

Considering the actions and lifestyles of some of our great tennis players like Laver, Newcombe, Roche, Rafter and even Pat Cash......Kyrgios and Tomic act like spoiled brats and bring the game and our country into disrepute. Is it them, a generational thing or just a sign of the times - I dont know, just know that I am not proud to have these two representing our country.

Give the kid a break folks. Anyone would think you were never young.

I think all these tantrums and general bad behaviour started with the American tennis players. Players before them always demonstrated good sportsmanship.

I agree.

I saw a young brother and sister who are coming up through the tennis ranks and what well brought up charming kids they were.

Kyrios is definitely NOT their role model!

I watched the Australian Open 2017 finals Saturday and Sunday together with both presentations.

The effort and 'professionalism' displayed by the Williams sisters was great IMO.

The Federer/Nadal match was amazing to me. Such class ... the old never-give-up, go for it, no-tantrum-just-play-better exhibition from both had me mesmerised.

As for the presentation/post-match responses from all involved ... just great to me.

Accolades not abuse. Way to go in my book.

In August, 2015 Kyrgios was playing Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka in the second round of the Montreal Masters.  After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, mid-way through the second set, a court-side microphone picked up Kyrgios telling Wawrinka that Thanasi Kokkinakis, had slept with his girlfriend.

'Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend,' he said. 'Sorry to tell you that, mate'.

His mother must be proud.
