New York Cheesecake

I found this recipe in Woman's Weekly and made it today. It was so successful, I thought I'd put it up.

INGREDIENTS

250g plain sweet biscuits
125g butter, melted
750g cream cheese, softened
2 teaspoons finely grated orange rind
1 teaspoon finely grated lemon rind
1 cup (220g) caster sugar
3 eggs
¾ cup (180g) sour cream
¼ cup (60ml) lemon juice

sour cream topping
1 cup (240g) sour cream
2 tablespoons caster sugar
2 teaspoons lemon juice

METHOD

Process the biscuits until fine. Add butter, process until combined. Press the mixture over the base and sides of a 24cm springform pan. Place on an oven tray; refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced).

Beat the cream cheese, rinds and sugar in a medium bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then the sour cream and juice.

Pour the filling into the pan; bake for 1 hour 15 minutes. Remove from oven; cool for 15 minutes.

Sour cream topping

Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl. Spread over the cheesecake. Bake the cheesecake for a further 20 minutes; cool in oven with door ajar. Refrigerate the cheesecake for 3 hours or overnight before serving.

Sounds really nice Mari. Thanks

Hello Sandi,

I was thinking of you this week. I said I would let you know how the rum babas  came out when I made them. Well I was visiting relatives in Melbourne for a little over a week and spent a couple of days with a cousin, who loves cooking. She also lived in London at the time when Lyons Corner Houses were popular. I don't know whether you've heard of them, anyway, they served up the best rum babas we had ever eaten. I told her that I had promised Micha to make some and straightaway she said why don't we make them the next day, since Micha was coming over on the Friday for a bar mitzvah and he could have a nice surprise. They turned out just great and because as you know they're very sweet, we made them just half the size. I was so much in Micha's good books, he even went shopping with me when we got back to Perth!

Mari  good to see you posting, I remember Lyons Tea Houses but let's get to the bottom line DID YOU GET THE RUM BABA RECIPE? You might hear me whooping it up if you did .

Hello Vivity

I think my post must have been misleading. Did you think I had the Lyons rum baba recipe? If so, no, we used one that Sandi gave me weeks ago, I can't imagine they would very different though. So sorry. Luckily I had not removed it from my computer and was able to access from Melbourne without spoiling Micha's surprise.

You say you remember Lyons, how I loved having afternoon tea there. Do you remember a bakery in most of the suburbs called Grodzinski's? The New York cheesecake is very similar to theirs.

Pleased they came out OK for  you Mari and you enjoyed them.  Hmmm if they are very sweet I'm sure Micha would eat them anyway even if they weren't as good.

My hubby's a sweet maniac too so he would like them as well.  If he behaves I might make him some sometime.  Not really into very sweet things myself.

My Indian neighbour sends things in and says these are for Uncle and these are for Aunty.

Hubby won't eat any spicy food at all and I love it.

Sandi...you can always send offerings from your Indian neighbour to me...just love Indian food. BTW...how did the last event go...I bet they enjoyed the spread!!

Hi Mari, I remember Lyons Tea Houses and recall going into one in Oxford St once in London but I was of the generation that went to Wimpy Bars also owned by Lyons, special tea- time treat for us when little was to go to a Place called Cadenas in Southampton for Knickerbocker Glories if we had behaved quietly at the hands of our sadistic dentist.

I have never heard of Grodzinskis may have been one pre-war in Soton, certainly not in my village, and Southampton had to be just about rebuilt after the war and into the 60s and cafes were a low priority.

SANDI is the Rum Baba in recipes?

Knickerbocker Glories...now you're bringing back some memories Viv....and eccles cake!

Lardy Cake was another one but never sure how the name originated.

I absolutely love cheesecake. sounds a nice recipe Mari. I have all the ingredients except sour cream (which I have never bought) but I can imagine the lemon juice would do the job in fresh cream.

Going to make it this week.

Thank ya kindly!

You're very welcome Phyl and to tell you the truth, it didn't last long in our house! Since I had such a good trial run, I'm making another one to take to a friend's dinner in a few days. Have to hide it from my sweet tooth husband!
