New initiative helps older Aussies with online banking

A new course launched by the eSafety Commissioner, as part of the Be Connected program, seeks to make online banking both safer, and more accessible, to more older Australians.

While two-thirds of seniors do undertake online banking at least monthly, many are still reticent to, mainly due to security concerns, so this course is vital to increasing their confidence.

“We take for granted that online banking has been widely adopted, but for many older Australians, ‘taking the plunge’ can be a huge leap of faith — the idea of having your money accessible and transferrable with one click can be both liberating and incredibly frightening,” said eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant.

Ms Inman Grant said 75 per cent of older Australians were concerned about the safety and security of online banking, so they designed the course around building their confidence in this area.

“The course will teach older Australians to transfer funds, check balances, download statements, pay bills - and will help them to set strong passwords, avoid scams and use safe ways to communicate with their bank,” she said.

It also features a simulated online bank, called Squirrel Bank — to help older Australians practice skills learned in the course and help increase their confidence to bank online.

“Learning how to access online banking safely is critical for older Australians,” added Ms Inman Grant.

Australian Banking Association CEO Anna Bligh welcomed the initiative from the eSafety Commissioner.

“We want banking to be accessible and safe for all bank customers. Be Connected will help older customers gain the confidence they need to bank online,” Ms Bligh said.

“Importantly the module covers both banking essentials and online safety information to help warn people of potential fraud and scams.

“Remember a bank will never ask for your account details, PIN or passwords,” she said.

My wife and I have been using online banking for about 20 years now and never had a problem.  Had to line up in one of the so called Big 4 banks recently to open an online trading account and decided never to do something like that again.  What a waste of time - I was in the bank for about 45 minutes and the actual business transaction took about 10 of those minutes.  My bank has a very simple online service, very secure, and a great call/callback service.  In my experience, users cause most security issues, not the bank!

what about a link to get more info and to enroll?

True online banking has improved leaps and bounds and on the other hand visiting the branch has become a waste of time.

However some of the changes bank make do become counterproductive.

I use online banking to download my bank statements and save them as .pdf document for use during tax time.

In the last two months ANZ have made it a horrendously difficult exercise. When I get a statement to save, it comes up as "CCC Retrieve Statement". No luck saving as .pdf document or in any other format. As an additional service the log in is cut off immediately so you have to log in again to look at the accounts.

Over to you guys at ANZ do something soon as tax time is on us.

Change your bank!
