Mystery meals, where do they go?

Some dishes are disappearing before our eyes.

Once upon a time there were regulars such as steamed puddings, corned beef, and ham steaks and pineapple, although I dont miss that salty, sweet nightmare. But no-one seems to serve them any more.

And I know Im in a club of one, but I havent had a decent dish of liver in decades, but mostly because no one serves it. I make do with pate, its a struggle.

Whats a dish from your childhood that seems to have gone off the menu forever?

My Mother used to cook Lambs Fry and Bacon but we as children hated it.  Still love Ham Steaks and Pineapple although I'm now one in my household, but like to make Ham and Pineapple  sandwiches. Cottage Pie was another favorite , and good old Pea and Ham soup made with a Ham Hock, (makes a great Winter soup). I've just made Turmeric and Ginger Dahl Soup and it was delicious, I have enough in the freezer to last me 2 meals, I also make a little boiled Rice to go with it, Yum, takes me back to my childhood.

Worry not Jan. There's at least 2 of us who love liver, especially with bacon, onions and mashed spuds.  Yummy !!

As you say it's disappearing but I do see it occasionally on cafe menus.

:) I was a fan of Lamb's Fry and Bacon when young.

Haven't had it in over 50 years now.

I last had it about 5 years ago .... when my doctor warned me off it.

Seemingly it is right at the top of the bad list for building up uric acid in your body which leads to gout and  kidney stones.

I'll make it 3 who love liver, 4 if I count hubby in as well! I've just found a butcher that supplies pork liver. This was the liver we always had in the UK where I grew up and this is the first time I've found anyone to supply it in Australia in over 40  years. The butchers slice liver differently here than they do in the UK although I don't suppose it makes any difference to the taste lol. It's a real favorite of mine with bacon, tomatoes, sweet corn a little potato (chips, boiled, mashed, roasted etc) and a tasty gravy. Hubby loves onions with it but I can't eat fried onions so he's on his own with that one. Another favorite is toad in the hole; sausages in batter baked in the oven. That has been a real pleaser ever since I can remember and I still prepare that one sometimes to this day. The only thing that I have changed over the years is the skin of the sausages. Sausage skins are tough these days. Why, oh why did they start using that artificial stuff to make the skins???? But I just take that off and use the sausages without their skins for a toad in the hole treat, served with roasted potatoes, green vegetables and gravy. Just the wonderful aroma of this dish cooking takes me back instantly to childhood and waiting impatiently for the toad in the hole to come out of the oven. Yum.

Always have liver when ever I see it on the menu which I must admit it not very often.

I used to cook it myself but now I cannot see it for sale in the butchers or meat

section. No only that my wife is not fond of it.

All the above plus bubble and squeak, my mum's curried sausages (actually in a white sauce flavored with hot Madras curry powder), mock whitebait fritters,

Both my son and I love lamb fry but unfortunately it's very hard to get.  Used to buy it from our local IGA for $2 each then they closed and have only in the last couple of weeks re-opened.  However the new owners haven't yet stocked this item.  Checked with the local butcher and he was charging $8 to $9 each!!!

You should try asking the owners or the butchers at the IGA. As owner-operators generally IGA has more scope to personalise what their customer wants. They might well be able to get some in for you.

Also a fan of Lamb's fry and bacon using my mum's tried and tested recipe. My husband and our children also love it. Regularly on my menu. I love picking a lamb's fry out at Woolies just to see one of the young girls on the checkout almost throw up at the sight of it. She has a real problem scanning it even though it's in a cryovac plastic. Does that make me cruel?

Yep!

If this doesn't put you off liver nothing will haha

Ooooo you evil woman Sue. LOL

I still cook all these old recipes, maybe because I have a pet hate for today's served up junk.

On TV (example) Today we are cooking "Tomato and Beans with Chilli" so out comes 2 cans and a damn jar. For Petes sake, what happened to fresh? yes it's more work if the beans need soaking for hours, but the fresh taste far outweighs cans and jars. Even my canned or preserved foods taste better than shop jars. It may only have a 12 - 24 month shelf life but it has none of those multiple numbers or unpronounceable names added to preserve it from your birth to death time frame.

Unfortunately its the way of the world today, laziness? perhaps. One of my daughters who is now 52 this year, reaches for packets, jars and tins to make main meals. My visits to her (excluding covid rules), are not too regular, my main packing item is Metamucil....LOL
