My carpets were looking like needing a clean!

My Electrolux vacuum cost me $500 with a power head in 1988 and has been a good cleaner - but when I was unable to use it as in hospital my husband did the cleaning and forgot and left the power head running - and it blew up. P:

Since then used the normal heads and noticed recently that the carpets are dull - Axminster throughout except for kitchen and bathroom etc. Old but will probably outlast us :)

Anyway in town went into Godfrey's to see if they had a power head for my old cleaner - no they no longer make it but he showed me a Wertheim which looks like the Dyson and two models - one $800 and other $1100.

Seems they do this scheme whereby on age pension i could buy one for $16 a week or other for $20 a week.

Guess I am a sucker as bought the lower priced one and it cost me nothing in charges except $2.50 a for 26 payments of $34 a fortnight on pension day by direct debit and a set up fee of $35 which works out around $100 on top of the price of the cleaner .

took it home and thought as I a fool? Well the anser to that is NO>

I was so embarrassed at how many times I filled up the cylinder (no bag) and had to empty it. 2and 1/2 times and I vacuum weekly and sometimes in between!

Now my carpets look as if the cleaner has just finished shampooing them and my friend reckoned brand new.

Also no back ache - so no I am not a silly billy after all.

I usually always sleep on a decision before I buy and never buy on the spot like I did but I saw him use another vacuum (a good brand) on a bit of carpet to clean up the mess he created - sand and grit and stuff and then show me how much was in that cylinder and then followed it up using the Wertheim and it got out even more than the first one. Gobsmacked.

You know we forget our vacuum get old too and just get on with it suffering bad aching back for years.

Anyway this has shown me how easy it is for the younger ones to just get it today and do it with a phone call - fine as long as you keep track of how much you owe and when it is due and if you have the income to pay for it.

Cant wait to use it again - madness.............:)

Glad you are happy with your new Vac--

I have my carpets steam cleaned every 12 months, about this time of year. In between times I have a Bissel Big Steam Clean Machine, just to go over the most trafficked areas. It's a vacuum cleaner/steam cleaner, which was given to me as a farewell gift from one employer. (Maybe she thought I was a bit messy?) It's a great vacuum cleaner, and alright as a steam cleaner.

Don't throw out your Electrolux. If it just needs a new hose or a part - or a service - contact the Electrolux company. These machines have an long-lasting motor and are well built.

If you can afford a new machine for around the $1,000 - well that is ok and your choice.

Be wary of buying the cheap vacs - especially those under $100. They are not very good. My sister regrets that she replaced her ancient Electrolux for a cheapie - mainly because it was lighter. The motor burnt out in less than a year.

A good idea, before buying new electrical or electronic equipment, is to look up user reviews on Google. Type in the brand or model and "reviews" - or just the type of appliance and "reviews". Make sure you are looking at Australian reviews.

My electrolux is 28 years old and they wont service it any longer as obsolete.

I can afford it because they are taking 26 payments of $34 on pension day. Then it is mine so very affordable.

The good old Electrolux were great. That's for sure.

I had one which had belonged to my mother, and it kept going for many years.

I bought my first one from Godfrey's and this latest will be my last one for sure both my vacuum cleaners to date have been electrolux and lasted me for many many years.

The cheapies are really a waste of money.

I am really impressed with this one - it is made in china but the motor is made in Australia and so should last. Wertheim is the make and my sister has a Dyson - I did have a look at these in Harvey Norman but no demonstration whereas Godfrey's which is in same complex - did a demo that got me sucked right in. Gobsmacked as I said and still am.

I agree with you. If we buy the cheapies then it will just be destroyed easily.

This one performs good.
