Hello everyone I am new to the seniors forum I have just bought a new H/P printer which works good but the only problem is that when I switch on my computer the printer switches on automatically even though I have switched it of manually the last time that I used the computer, how can I stop the printer from switching on automatically . I have always had H/P printers and never struck this problem but am wondering if you have set up the fax facility with it? If you have and you are auto-connected online when you start your computer, I suspect the printer may turn on too in readiness to accept a fax. You should be able to change it in the fax settings by unclicking auto start if this is the case. Jemma

Thank you for your quick reply but the printer that I bought is just a cheap one no whistles or bows got in Harvey Norman's at Erina I know that there is a box some where with a tick in it that I have to delete but I can't find it . Regards Moregil

Sorry I couldn't help - sounds like you just need someone to show you how to get to settings - maybe you could ask a nearby kid to show you - they know it all!

Cheers, Jemma.

Jemma075 are you trying to tell me that this is my problem . moregil

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was having trouble with my computer. So I called Eric, the 11 year old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.

As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong? He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.'

I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, 'An, ID ten T error? What's that? In case I need to fix it again.'

Eric grinned.... 'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?'

'No,' I replied.

'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out.'

So I wrote down: I D 1 0 T

I used to like Eric

Hmmm... very clever but not at all molegil. I became a technohead out of necessity. After several computer crashes when I began @ $50 a time to fix, I began observing and questioning the technician.

i always believed that if you can read you can learn to do anything from books. Wrong! You also need to be able to observe. Ten years ago, when these things were less user friendly I wasted a whole year and a fair bit of money trying to teach myself.

In exasperation I enrolled in Cert II at TAFE and it was the best money I ever spent. It makes such a difference when you do something wrong to have someone standing there to show you how to fix it and why it happened. The school technicians are also very helpful and forthcoming with mechanical advice.

I needed to become au fait with my computer because I was also studying off-campus for my degree and besides having to learn a scientific research statistics program the university had converted to several components of on-line learning.

As a result I became quite adept at upgrading my desktop PC with new and improved components. Now I have converted to a laptop I would never have a bulky desktop again., it goes everywhere with me and I have a next G broadband card so I can logon anywhere and am never out of touch. Most essential for me as I do all my business on-line, so even if I am away I can still keep up to date with the bills.and of course family.

Oops! There I go again - once I start writing - I never know when to stop.

Cheers,

Jemma

Hello Jemma

I don't use my computer to that extent I just use it for talking to friends all around the globe some by email and some through Yahoo messenger talk I am in several yahoo groups and we commutate and share photos and life styles and family news I have learned through trial and error my first computer which had Windows 98 every time that I mucked it up I just put the disc in again and rebooted back to normal again after having saved anything that I needed unto a floppy disc so I am still mucking around making mistakes but having fun along the way . Regards moregi

Woohoo! You have picked up on the most important of all - simply shutdown and restart - no need to save or reload though.

I have worked with computers for over 30 years and the number one solution for problems is "Have you restarted the computer?"

Hello rallygreg

Do you have any solution to my ariginal inquire . moregil

Does the printer actually turn on, or just make a few noises when the computer starts up?

If it just makes a few noises and then goes back to sleep, then this is normal for many printers.

If the printer is actually turned off (no lights on at all - if it has lights) then this would be unusual.

Hello Greg

The printer makes the usual noises when the computer is turned on and then a little flag pops up from the bottom right hand corner to tell me that the printer is not ready for use now which it is , this happens even if I turn it of manual the last time that I was using the computer , there must be a little box that I can click or unclick to change this but I cannot find it .
