Moral dillema

I've been faced with a moral dillema today. I volunteer for a church driven, missions to the Islands, op shop. I sort through all the donated stuff. We quite often get a lot of junk. Today, I searched through a very old and very grotty handbag. It was obviously part of a deceased estate - old clothes, old bits and pieces accompanied it. As I searched through the handbag, I found $2,504.10. There were no identifying papers included, they'd obviously been removed, but the general junk had obviously been swept into a garbage bag and donated. Should this have been handed to the Police, or just accepted as manna from heaven, as the boss lady perceived it? I felt it should have gone to the Police - maybe somehow, they could have found the rightful owner. Bit of a shock to the system.

Good for you Bev, you did right by you ,,, as for the money, the chances of finding the family are remote , if the donations are anything like where I worked as a volunteer,

A similar situation arose, there, and the" Find" handed to the Paid manager, who immediately decreed that the money belonged to the church that ran the shop, we put up the argument it shold be up to the police were over ruled ,and the money put in the safe ,, call me a cynic, but I seriously doubt that the church saw a cent of that money, and the paid bod was a bit richer,, this happened a day or two after two volunteer staff had been hauled over the coals for"Stealing"goods that they had collected in there own car, using their own petrol, on their way home ,arrived next morning with the goods , and dismissed immediately for stealing,,,that was enough for me so I stopped volunteering forthwith, had no wish to work for these people any longer

Yes Dusty I too have heard from friends about such things happening--these days I give directly to those I know may need things--and the Op Shops get the left overs. Even with donations I would rather give directly as you never know who and what the money goes to. I have read and heard so much about the "running costs etc etc" which on many occasions equate to dinners out entertaining--etc.
