manning river and surrounding area

Hoping to visit Wingham which is where my ancestors first settled in the 1800's.

Does anyone on here live in the Manning River area near Wingham and can recommend somewhere to stay either in Taree or Wingham?

Will have to ask my BIL Radish.  He lives right beside the old Pacific Highway bridge.

Right on the Manning River.

Ok Just spoken to Richard.  He says there's a motel at the Golf Club at Wingham.

If you want to look up familly history the Pub in the middle of Wingham is across the road from the Historical Society, which may be of interest to you.  He's not sure of the pub's name.

Just googled Radish and the Pub is called the Australian.  It's budget accommodation and has a bistro.

Sandi, thank you so much for that information.  Being right across the road from the Historical Society will be very handy as I believe there is a lot of information regarding my ancestors, the Summervilles in there.

Radish check this site out  The Pub sounds alright from this

You don't have much choice - it's the only Pub in the town.

When I can get hold of Richards wife I will ask her if she knew of the Summervilles as her parent's lived in Taree all their life so they are sure to have known them.  In fact her BIL actually does a lot of work for the Historical Society there.  He does research etc.

Roseanne's previous name was Bird.

Radish, Haven't been able to get Roseanne yet but have since spoken to Richard and he knows about the Summervilles.  He worked with 2 sisters at the Taree Hospital. Richard was a Mister Sister and worked in the Critical Care Section.

He also knows some of the families there.  Taree/Wingham is a small place.  So you may be able to have contact with some of the family still living there and get more information from them.

See you never know who knows who in this country.

Apparently the Summervilles were living in Taree as well as Wingham.

Yes, they are a well know family Sandi.  They had a reunion in 1987 I think it was and they came from all over the place.  There are a lot of descendants in Oz.

Can trace back to Oliver Cromwell.  Sir Walter de Somerville was a knight who fought alongside William the Conqueror.   Quite a fascinating history I have found.

I have contacted an Ian Richardson who lives in Wingham (this was a year or so ago)and he was able to give me some information re ancestors and not that long back I was sent a photograph (via email) of my great, great grandparents who were the first out here.  I was thrilled to get it.

Ahh that's why Richard said some of them spell it with an o and others with the u.

Will send you Richard's name by PM.  Some of them will definitely know the Birds.

Wow fantastic stuff Ladies .. I am back with my name Hatch to 1300s When it gradually changes to De Hach and one William the conquers Normans or Norsemen .

Somerville is also a Norman name being granted land in Scotland as one of the leading Norman Families..

Hey Pete go far enough back and you never know who you are related to.

Strangely enough when I was doing research I found that one of my ancestors was married to an ancestor of a chap I was dating when I was in England. in the early 70's.

In those by gone days of course it was very important that your children married into the "right" families.  Love had little to do with it;  all about money, titles etc.

Thank goodness those days are gone.

Yes I do it in spurts . I have a tremendous amount of material on several family names including Brokenshire, Cook, Fairbrother . And of course Hatch..

They were all from South Devon where the Hatch or D'Hach were granted Land by William the same as the Somervilles in Scotland..

Yes, there is a lot of history there.  The correct spelling of the name is Somerville but it seemed to go between throwing in the U to make it Summerville and back to the O...lol.

Pete, it is only as one gets to a mature age that you start to wonder where you came from.  Looking at photos I can see how the family resemblance continues on through the generations.  Can see it with my great, great grandmother right through to myself.

So true I have photos of my grandmother a Lady and both girls are spitting image . Her Husband my Grandfather must have had strong Genes as I my boys And cousins all look like him...

Perhaps one of you might be able to help me.  I had a friend in Goulburn in the early 60's.  His name was Kel Hutton.  He had been a Christian Brother & he leeft to marry a really lovely girl, whos name I can't remember.  He was then a Lay teacher at St Patrick's College at Goulburn.  They sold up & moved up to Cundle Town where they bought a house that backed onto the Manning River & I think they had 5 or 6 kids.  Kel was teaching in one of the schools in Taree,  I lost track of them when I went sailing at the end of the 70's.  Kel would have been very involved in Community affairs.  If anybody on here knew them, I would love to know what happened to them.  They would now be in there late 70's, if still alive.

I just Googled Kel again, after some years.  His wife's name was Leslie.  Kel passed away in Yepoon in 2011.  He was a good man.

Innes, have sent an email to family in Taree, so will let you know anything that they can tell me.

Sandi,  Did you ever get a reply from Taree re Kel & Leslie Hutton?

Thanks Sandi.
