Make sure your pest controllers are properly licensed

Householders looking to get rid of pests are reminded to check pest technicians are licensed before allowing their property to be sprayed or baited.

A licensed pest technician is trained to use pesticides properly to minimise risks to the environment, property or pets.

Licensed pest technicians are listed on the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) ) Public Register.

“We encourage anyone considering hiring a pest technician to search the Public Register,” said EPA Director Regulatory Operations Adam Gilligan.

“Anyone carrying out prescribed pesticide work must hold a licence issued by the EPA.

“Licensed pest controllers must ensure they only use registered pesticides covered by a label or permit and must take all measures to avoid harming other people, animals or damaging the environment.

“The best way to protect your family, and make sure you are getting an effective and safe pest treatment, is to check the technician is licensed.”

Householders can also double check a pest controller is licensed by asking to see their licence before agreeing to any pest control work.

Licences have an expiry date and a photo, which must match the person carrying out the work.

Pest controllers must also provide customers with the full name of the pesticide product being used and have a safety data sheet about the pesticide they are using, which outlines the precautions required to avoid pesticide exposure.

“Our advice is do not use a pest technician if you cannot verify they are licensed,’’ said Mr Gilligan.

“Pesticides need to be used responsibly and safely. Consumers are completely within their rights to check technicians are accredited.”

If you are concerned a technician may not be licensed, contact the EPA’s 24-hour Environment Line on 131 555.
