Looking back over the Years
Old Covers of The National Geographic Magazine.
Great pics.
Wonder if it will go ahead next year. Let's hope so.
I remember being taken to the Easter show the 1st one after the WW2 and I was with Mum and all I saw from the entrance to the exit was others legs -- there were so many there never saw a thing of the show
Oh dear Plan B it reminds me of my late mother telling me she was in a crowd shopping with her mother and looked up at her mother to find she had the hand of a strange women!
My little sister had the pram they used to call a Moses Basket, 5th from the bottom photo. Parents couldn't afford a cot so they used it to take her for walks and sleep in at night. She almost lost a finger when she was 8 months old when the hood fell forward, luckily she had just the tip of it damaged. I remember when we went to Queensland many moons ago and were amused to see the prams hooked on to the outside of the bus. Thanks for the memories.
Yes I remember those Hola, as a child living in the country. I wonder why they did not take on that well? I assume it was because they were not water proof. Certainly brings make memories for me as I see these old photos.
Hi Celia - I bought a Moses Basket bassinet for my first child. The person whom I bought it off
couldn't get it out of the house quickly .enough as he said they raised 10 children in it and didn't
want it in the house any longer.
Ava Gardner, Maureen O'Hara, Grace Kelly, Clark Gable, James Stewart, Tony Curtis, Troy Donahue, Cary Grant, Sophia Loren, Jane Russell, Spencer Tracey, Kathryn Hepburn, and Kim Novak.
Always found Kathryn Hepburn pretty irritating as an actress ...think the best film she and Humphrey Bogart were ever in was 'African Queen', they were both well cast for the roles in that film.
Congratulations Shetso1!
Did you see Kathryn Hepburn with Peter O'toole in 'A Lion in Winter'?
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063227/
She was a strong woman that is for sure; personally I have not liked Kim Novak, but the others I have enjoyed their acting.
Well done Shetso1. Oscar for you LOL.
Shesto is wrong in naming Troy Donahue, it was Tab Hunter. I had a teenage crush on him, he was so handsome.
Wow ... well done Hola. Troy Donahue and Tab Hunter certainly looked alike.
:) Couldn't believe I found an autographed photo of Troy Donahue on the internet to someone called Celia LOL.
Thanks for pointing that out Hola, they are very similar.
Hey good one Hola...acthally he didn't even cross my mind but Tab Hunter it is!
I thought you would be interested in this story I found on MSN: http://a.msn.com/05/en-au/BB12MYE8?ocid=se2
When June Almeida peered into her electron microscope in 1964, she saw a round, grey dot covered in tiny spokes. She and her colleagues noted that the pegs formed a halo around the virus—much like the sun’s corona.
What she saw would become known as the coronavirus, and Almeida played a pivotal role in identifying it. That feat was all the more remarkable because the 34-year-old scientist never completed her formal education.
Wonderful story Celia...thanks for sharing.
Yes Sophie, I had not heard of her until today, what a life she experienced rather fulfilling.
Thanks Celia. Such an interesting woman with so little recognition.
Read more about her story at ...
Almeida went on to identify a host of viruses including rubella, which can cause complications during pregnancy. Scientists had been studying rubella for decades, but Almeida was the first to see it.
An electron microscope blasts a specimen with a beam of electrons and then records the particles’ interactions with the specimen’s surface. The challenge was discerning if a tiny blob is a virus, a cell, or something else. To solve the problem, Almeida realized she could use antibodies taken from previously infected individuals to pinpoint the virus. Antibodies are drawn to their antigen-counterparts—so when Almeida introduced tiny particles coated in antibodies, they would congregate around the virus, alerting her to its presence. This technique enabled clinicians to use electron microscopy as a way to diagnose viral infections in patients.
In December 1926, Agatha Christie's husband Archie confirmed he was leaving her for his female golf partner. She appeared to stage her own death in Surrey and fled to Harrogate in Yorkshire. After 11 days, her husband turned up at the hotel with a police officer after staff became suspicious of their mystery guest. It is still not known why Agatha went into hiding despite the passing of almost a century.
Today the Hydro Hotel is called The Old Swan, we met a cousin there for lunch in 2000, a cousin I had never seen before! But thats another story!

Have read about this before. Thanks Celia, a fascinating story.
Yes RnR so had I, but thought some people may find it of interest.
Can anyone name these stars of bygone years?
I will be more careful this time, I have written their names down just incase I forget!!
With a little bit of cheating I came up with:
Jeff Chandler/ Clint Walker/ Glen Ford/ James Arness/ Rod Taylor/ Christopher Lee/ Charlew Bronson/ Tab Hunter (?)
Loved Peter Finch and Gregory Peck!
Each time I come back into the site they change, sometimes all appear sometimes there are little x!

OK here goes nothing...Shirley Maclaine, Lana Turner, Sophia Loren, Doris Day, 'just cant put my finger on this actress' name but get the feeling she would have always been cast as the good girl!, Gina Lollabrigida, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Judy Garland, and Donna 'can't think of surname' perhaps?
Felt Audrey Hepburn was over-rated as an actress and also found her irritating as an actress as well...bearable in 'My Fair Lady' and modelled clothes well.
Apparently Spencer Tracey was often pretty toxic lots written about the bloke. Apparently had a relationship with a teenage Judy Garland.
Poor old Judy - just chewed up and spat out by the Hollywood machine - no surprise she was messed up!
Yes RnR you are correct with Jane Powell congratulations.
What about the others??
Shetso1 good going, but what about number 8 please?
Any takers?
Tuesday Weld.
Tuesday's photo kept on going away and replaced by a cross and her name!
But yes RnR you are correct.
Wasn't 8 Joan Crawford?
Joan was Number 9 as I saw it here Shetso1. Maybe it displayed differently to you.
And 11 was Suzanne Hayward. See here.
Thanks Rnr no I didn't see Tuesday Weld she was missing from my line-up....
