Litter...Litter...Litter...

What a national disgrace the roadside litter is.
Going for a trip this weekend I couldn't help but notice the huge amount of litter strewn about.
Whole bin bags or cardboard boxes just dumped out of cars, then the animals come along and spread it all around.
Bad enough fast food cartons thrown out but whole bin bags ---- how disgusting.

Yes jaxx, it sure makes you wonder what their homes are like--but then again they maybe keep their homes alright and just don't give a fig about anyone but them selves. I am amazed at the way people throw things on the ground even if there is a bin close by. I guess it is their minds that are sick.

Like many of the problems in our society, I believe that litter is caused by a fairly small minority. It only takes a few lazy and careless people to make a mess, and that mess will stay there until someone is paid to clean it up. We all know how dirty Asia can be, yet Singapore stands out as a shining exception - littering there is considered a serious crime and if you are a "serial offender", you can actually get prison time for dropping a cigarette butt. Due to its capacity for litter damage, I understand that chewing gum is banned in Singapore.

Maybe we should look at both toughening our litter laws and at beefing up enforcement of those laws. Naturally, the government here is only interested in making money from fines.

I agree kfc just a small number of people are disgusting.

I find the young people of today very good at picking up rubbish and putting it in the bin.

as they learn this at school and hopefully at home, but some miss out but on the

whole most young ones are pretty good I have noticed and especially with

recycling. I think they can teach older folk a thing or two in this regard.

I do agree that a few think it o.k. to dump their rubbish and should be prosecuted.

Have a lovely Tuesday.

Phyl.

So many time I have seen people throw thing from their cars--or drop their rubbish at fast food places--and when I have approached them --they have said --thats what they --meaning the people that work there--are supposed to do pick up the rubbish and they drove off. I also picked up some rubbish once that a person threw from their car--before they drove off and threw it back in and said--you dropped this--I got an evil but surprised look

One of my pet litter hates is cigarette butts. It seems that smokers believe they have a god-given right to drop or throw them wherever they want.

The new smoking laws have spawned a garden of butts outside many shops now, they get pushed into dirt or among the flowers totally ruining the beauty of the flowers. Ashtrays are there to be ignored you see, even when they are provided.

It is no trouble for a smoker to take a container with them to dispose of their butts and not expect anyone else to clean up their mess--however there are so many that just throw the buts around--everywhere

I live opposite a primary school and am amazed at the amount of litter that blows across the school ground despite there being ample bins. Ive been to the school Office and asked them why dont they get the kids to do a paper-pickup? Their response " We haven't noticed all that much litter". I have threatened to collect the litter that's blown into my place and dump it in their office, which brought a better response.

When the gardener slashes the grass along the school boundary he doesn't bother picking up the litter first, and then its everywhere only in much smaller pieces.

And when the little dears leave the school grounds, after they use a tissue its throw on the ground, which I feel is as bad as smoker's butts

I agree with the 'posters' about litter. Here in Sth.E. Queensland we have roadside litter patrols on the M1 and one can see them on a daily basis cleaning the 'garbage' which is thrown from vehicles by the uncaring dirtbags. This has to be paid for, as usual, by all of us. It is a pleasure though, to see the pristine condition of the roadside.

I dont know if its still going but it used to be done here in sleepy old SA as part of Work for the Dole. To stop the lazy sods laying in the grass, they were told to keep a sharp lookout for snakes!

Do they still have --work for the dole?
