Reagan hi.

I think you and I are the only sane people on this Thread!

I've had emails privately from others that say some are a bunch of fruit cakes.

Wonder whether they are boiled or baked.

Ann

Its a shame that some are so scared of their own shadow that they won't venture out of their State .I can only encourage you to travel Malaysia is a wonderful country ,as is many countries in Asia . Bit of you stay on the beaten track of organised travel you might as well stay at home .

Bu the way I have reported your interference .

Whose interference are you referring to?

May I remind you..it was Ann who created this thread....

Ive decided to ignore the pathetic attacks by Ann, Micha Reagen Thea Foxy - fruitloops.

I missed Thea I thought she was a sane one ,

controlling and crazy posseisve over their precious threads ? somthing not quite right there

wonder what Freud would have to say about that

Probably nothing...but I am sure he'd have a lot to say about people who converse with themselves non-stop...

You disappoint me Thea I thought you were better than that

Everyone has their limits Brocky..you are trying the patience of many..soon everyone will go and you will have the forum all  to yourself...

Why not try and improve your behaviour..the forum could be quite pleasant regardless of any one person...

Yes..the thread is a travel thread and of course you are entitled to contribute..but why not use the thread to tell us about your own travels which may interest us..

It's not necessary to have these imaginary conversations with yourself..I am sure we'd read your posts anyway..

I love hearing about people's travels..

Thea that is rcsvlu whst I am. Doing , Raphy has more experience of Malaysia than I do , so I am asking his advise .I really don't understand the problem .

Anyway back to the thread which is about holidays tell me about the best East coast island that Sarah and I should stop over that is not touristy .

The whole of the east coast has scenic rainforesta and beautiful beaches. Its a relaxing wonderful drive.

Club Med is in Cherating which is an hour north of Kuantan in Pahang. That of course is touristy, but if you keep driving north towards Kelantan and Trengannu - there;s some lovely private hotels and chalets to spend a few nights

I suggest you stay in Taman Negara or a night or 2 and dead towards Kuantan and find a nice spot north of Kuantan in the state of Pahang

Kelantan and Trengganu and dry states - no alcohol

Redang isnt - as its an international tourist destination

If and I mean If I choose to drive I would head south from KL after a diversion to Penang . So I wouldn't be interested in going North .Ehats a nice discreet island non totidrty on East  past between KL and Singers .

I think there's really only Tioman off Mersing, Johor on the East Coast

Popular with locals

Sounds perfect ,is it about half way ,

Image result for tioman island

Got any idea of driving time from KL

5 hours easy slow drive

Just park at Jetty and take ferry

ferry takes a couplke of hours but its a nice scenic ride

That's my work week done

need a bottle of red before bid brunch ahead tomorrow. have a great evening Brocky

Thanks Raph seven here . Heading to terrace after shower .

Work is the curse of the drinking class

At the bar having my third wine

unfortunateky some of us still have to work

make hay while the sun shines as they say

and beifre the sunset on ones career, which in my case Is very soon

then I can be a man of leisure like you , you lucky duck

Ann, we did a brilliant cruise last year, usually I'm not one for long cruises but on the Amsterdam to Budapest one, never a dull moment.

Flew to Amsterdam spent three days sightseeing and then joined the cruise.

Banjo hi.

Do you mean a river cruise?  I have friends that have done those, I would love to do it, but would feel like a sitting duck with all the problems Europe has now.

I've been to Amsterdam a few times, love it....love Holland and Belguim.

We also went up to Germany and were very surprised to see the countryside was like Britain.

But pleasse tell us about your river cruise.

How many people would be on board the boat?  Stop offs each day?

Tours out from the cruise boat, what did you see?

What was Budapest like?    Not been there, would like to though.  Was it like Vienna?

What was the food like on board?

G'day Ann,

We went on a 15 day river cruise starting in Amsterdam and ending in Budapest and much to my wife’s delight it was five star all the way with even a private butler thrown in. What’s nice is, sure one paid a fair bit, but everything was included, we didn’t have to worry about airport transfers, tips and gratuities all paid for upfront. Food was top notch and with six dining rooms to choose from, you're spoilt for choice and in addition unlimited complimentary beverages, which included wines from the regions, beer and spirits, also great coffee all day.

Here’s a map of the cities we visited and did more than ample sightseeing.

You ask about Budapest and Vienna, both beautiful in their own way. The architecture of both cites is very similar, but the Budapest landscape is much prettier than Vienna. Vienna is very clean and classic and Budapest is more informal and needs a “brush up”, still it doesn’t detract from having charm. We wanted to see more of Vienna since Scenic did not allow a long visit. So at the end of the cruise, we took the train from Budapest (that was a great experience) and doubled back to Vienna where we spent a few days exploring.

Then from Vienna we flew to Marrakesh for our pre booked tour of Morocco. The entire trip was magnificent, don’t know if I would repeat such a long holiday, at the end we were both very tired.

Similar sights greeted us from our cabin each day, a sight for sore eyes.

European River Cruising 2017 Views

Morocco is an exciting place to visit, we like it all but our favourite spot was Chefchaouen, the Blue City. Sadly not very safe these days.

See you later Ann, have a great Sunday.

WoW that was brilliant, thanks Banjo.

What did you think of Bratislavia?  One of the folks we knew in the UK were heading that way, as his family came from there two generations ago, but the wife did not want to go there.  I often wondered what happened.

This was going back around 2002, but it seems more open to tourist now.

That was a fantatic holiday, one you would never forget.

Must show the husband.  Would you repeat a another cruise similar to that?

Yes I would Ann, maybe not as lengthy though.

I quite like the idea of hopping on and off and going

ashore each day.

Of course you have the option to stay on board, but that's

defeating the whole purpose.

TURKEY, UKRAINE, RUMANIA & RUSSIA

Husband and I have been to Sevastopol on the Black Sea.

So I thought I would try and share some happy memories of this holiday.

Odessa on the Black Sea and Constana in Rumania.....on the Black Sea.

We preferred Sevastopol, wide clean streets and pretty gardens. We ended up in a Food Market, which had a tiled roof with brick supports. Was very very large.  It was perhaps best described as a huge wide verandah around a building that housed the dairy and meat products.

Image result for Istanbul on two continents  Image result for Istanbul on two continents

The meat did not seem to be butchered the same as we know it, but chunks of meat.  I guess they have their own system there. Masses of all types of cheeses available.

Odessa looked sad, big flag stone streets with wide gaps in. Very dangerous for everyone not just the elderly.  I guess these days it looks even worse, I wonder how those people survive with all the war activities.

Our favourite place was Instanbul, as you know it is built on two continents Europe and Asia. We found them very friendly and hired a taxi for three hours and the driver spoke good English.

I found the streets cleaner than Cairo.....the people more friendly.  Lovely gardens and parks. Wonderful markets of Asian clothing. Masses of jewellery shops selling lots and lots of gold bangles, necklaces, earrings anything one can imagine made in gold, they love gold.

Spices, lots of many different spices and the aroma was wonderful, it leaves an excitment for the traveller to have so many wonderful aromas in such a confined space in the arcade market. But specially built to house the hundreds of brightly light little shops.  Nuts and fruit were in good supply too.

Of course Turkish Delight too!

Fabric stalls, clothing stalls, shoe stalls you name them.  Lots of Lapis and Tuquoise jewellery which I love. So very pretty.  Like one imagines Aladdins Cave. Did I mention carpets?  Well we did not see any fly, but they were there to see, many of them in all hues. Lanterns all hanging up so we had to crane our necks!  LOL...

We were on a small cruise ship, that had left the port of Civitavecchia seven days earlier and headed for the Greek islands.  We would have loved to have gone back before now but would not feel safe in Turkey as things stand.  But we have many happy memories.

After spending the day on shore we returned to the boat at dusk and the ship sailed late in the evening, was a wonderful site looking from one side of the ship at all the lights on both hillsides.

Not unlike Tasmania when you sail into Hobart.   How that waterway doesn't have accidents I don't know as it is very narrow and all the vessels from Romania, Ukraine Russia come through that bottle neck.

Of course we had to return through the same waterway, the Bosphorus once visiting the places I've mentioned and another happy memory was coming back through the Bosphorus again at night sitting in the dining room on the ship looking out over the waterway.  The lights sparkled the water sparkled it was magic.

Map of Bosphorus, Turkey

You've done some great travelling Ann and it's very refreshing to hear of someone's real adventures not the made up stories some deliver on here.

A bit dozy right now but will share some of my adventures later.

Shall look forward to it Micha, see you!

My darling Granddaughter will be turning 21 on the 17thMay. Her Dad is taking her on a surprise overseas trip to the Greek Islands and Dubai for 19 days. She will be estatic when she finds out. She has her Passport ready and he will tell her 4 days before they fly out. She asked me to give her a hint to where they might be going and I said "Just make sure you have your swimmers and sun screen". This holiday will be a dream come true.

How exciting Hola, what a lovley Dad!

That's a great birthday gift Hola. Mari and I have travelled to both of those places and wouldn't mind going back there.

Another chance to wear my "winning" blue suit!

Micha -  They are going with 4 other friends, I'd love to be a fly on the wall to watch the antics.  I'm glad you still have the "blue suit", maybe some lovely budgie smugglers in the same colour would look great.

Just an update on Granddaughter's surprise Greek holiday. It turns out she has been called up for Jury Duty on the day they are leaving. She had to have an affidavit to show why she could not attend Jury Duty, hence the surprise was a little spoilt., but nevertheless she doesn't know about the other stop overs. She'll still love it I'm sure.

Ah! Africa......I have only been to Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Durban as a 23 year old.

Reminds me so much of Perth, except for Table Mountain that is.  The parks the wider streets and the climate.

Image result for Cape Town Not having a head for heights however, I ended up with friends at the bottom of the mountain, debating whether to join them in the cable car.  Suddenly I was pushed from behind with a Hello Ann....looked around and it was a family of friends! Small world.  I don't think I would have gone up that mountain if they had not given me a push into the cable car!

The journey up there was horrifying for me, but once up there on terra ferma I was fine looking down on the city.  Walked around on the granite and notice little flowers growing in the cracks of the mountain!

Walking around Cape Town one could not help but notice the tall native men with Ostrich feathers on their head! Brightly coloured feathers pulling a rickshaw.   Durban had the same colourful Zulu men dressed up for the tourists..Image result for Cape towns zulu pulling ricshaws men of the 60s photos  Image result for Zulu men with ostrich feathers Related image

Image result for Durban south africa These buildings remind me of Singapore!

Wanting to cross a highway was an eye opener.....girlfriend and needed to cross a highway, I got to a  foot bridge only to find a notice  'Blacks Only'  so in the heat of day we had to walk another 300m to the 'whites only' bridge. Didn't like that at all.

Image result for Cape towns native men of the 60s photos Husband attended uni at Cape Town but he had to come from Zimbabwe........we are talking of a 16 year old going to university..........Year later he had his own car and drove the distance!    Around 2,500 Klm to Cape Town and 2,500 back again.   Of course I did not know him then.

Map from Harare, Zimbabwe to Cape Town, South Africa

When we first met he tells me the story of a yacht race off the coast of Cape Town, it had to have been around the month I was visiting.  It was a South African Championship.  The owner of the yacht was one armed.....they were leading the fleet and then a sudden gust of wind turned them over.    Hubby tells me the sinking feeling of the fleet passing them as they could not turn the yacht upright....it was a little yacht!

When I say I have only been to those places mentioned above, unlike hubby who has been to Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Mozambique.  Mainly building rail through these countries.

He tells the story as a young engineer in a house he shared with mates in Zambia.....his bedroom was 5m sq with a notice over the door.  'Yes it can' this is referring to the boat he was building in his bedroom! LOL  'Yes it can' referred to the size of the boat and yes it could fit through the door frame.  I question him about building a boat in a land locked country! Apparently they sailed on a lake close by.

Another part of Africa.....

As a 21 year old I sailed off from Fremantle heading for the UK.....as I had been through the Suez three times already with my parents,  I thought it would be great to get off the boat at the Port of Suez. This is the southern end of the canal and the northern end of the Red Sea.

This was a P  &  O ship and they put on a bus to take those passengers that wanted to exploy a bit of Eygpt during the period the ship had to navigate the canal.  So I jumped at the idea.  My mother would have had a pink fit.  The time before sailing through the canal we did not dare get off due to the political situation.  All I could remember from then was machine gun fire and bullet holes.

So I did not send my parents a post card!  LOL

Getting back to the bus ride.  Oh boy what a ride, it was a bone shaker....the windows would not close and they were loose and made such a din on the rickety road....no air conditioing and hard seats!

My biggest disappointment was seeing the Nile.  I expected it to be blue!   It looked more like mud. Brown yucky mud.   Never mind, off we went to the Cairo Museum.  Remember this was in 1966 before the treasure were allowed out of the country.  Climbing marble steps and coming into the room that housed the findings of Howard Carter in 1922.  One cannot help but be overawed.

In front of me was this gold chariot as if it had just been made, not a 3000 year old piece of transport for a Pharoah!  Image result for Tutankhamun treasure in cairo museum

Totally transfixed on this object for several minutes I then notice a bed, a chair, then various cabinets housing more treasures.  I can remember standing staring at the Death mask of the Pharoah himself.  Brought back memories of the London Museum as a 9 year old child with my father.  It is hard to be 9 or even 21 and try to get ones brain into gear to swallow the age of these treasures.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/the-legacy-of-howard-carter-did-king-tut-s-discoverer-steal-from-the-tomb-a-671993.html

I don't remember how long we were in the museum but it was not long enough, one wants to just stand there and look, admiring and trying to absorb the age of these household or should I say palace furniture and works of art.

Then we were off to the markets, hot and dusty and sweaty dirty white robed men.  My only purchase there was a Fezz for my uncle!  LOL

Then we were taken to the Hilton, lots of marble and alabaster and had lunch, the only souvenier I had from there was a paper table napkin and still have it today!  I must have been hungry and busy talking about what we had seen.  Then out into the street and more shops, but I did not venture far I just did not feel that safe and was glad when they said back on the bone shaker and off to the Pyramids.

The ride was about 30 minutes, I am told today that Cairo is now close to the Pyramids and they are still finding treasures as new buildings are being constructed.   I walked around saw the Phinx, walked up to the massive stones at the base of the Big Pyramid and then decided to get in line to have a camel ride.   I did not go into the Pyramid, everyone coming out said it smelt like a mans urinal!  So decided the outside was so magnificent I would make do with that an took photos.

Then I saw a line of people waiting for a ride on a camel!   Got to become second in line and the lady in front of me was bitten by one of the camels, thats it!  I got out of line and walked around looking at all aspects of the area I was in and taking photos.

Soon after we were told to board the bone shaker and off we went.   This was a very hot day and even at 21 I was glad to take a seat in this bus.... off it went turning corners nearly on two wheels.

It apparently was late and had to meet our ship at Port Said!

The journey was about an hour and a half along sandy roads with little vegetation.

Suddenly there looking out of the side widow was the upper deck and funnel of our ship!  That is all that could be seen as the canal was built high with sand and it looked so strange in a sea of white sand to see this bulk of engineering gliding along.

Must say I enjoyed the day but was glad to get back on board the ship and relax and talk to friends of what we had seen.  No digital cameral, I could not show them.   Those were the days of film and development of ones photos.   Have got so use to digital cameras now it is hard to imagine the days of spending a small fortune getting holiday photos developed!

Yes I took a photo of our ship sailing through the sand, but it has been a lasting memory for me seeing that vessel with a black funnel in the middle of nowhere!

Nice pics from the internet Ann

Certainly makes one want to visit those places

Well my little camera from back then is no more and neither are the photos so I used the ones on the net, and the journey is true!

Of course everthing you write is true Ann, blind Freddy can see you've been places!

People take a risk putting up personal pictures on a public forum like this with so many scammers around.

Reagan this site doesn't support private photos, so not worth the effort.  Anyway thats what the net is for to use.

Besides it was soooo long ago, the photos were black and white!  LOL

We as a family don't do facebook or it's like!

The only photos up here that I have taken someone else has used and placed on the net years back and they are of the family's two poodles.

Besides telling porkies makes life too complex!   It's not worth playing silly games.

Even if the site supported private photos, I would not be putting any up.

Ann, anyone can see from the way you relate your travelling, you have been there, ignore the clown.

Ann - i didnt mean to imply you weren't there. You misunderstood

You took the time to reseacrch and post those pics to help readers relate to the narrative.

They're great

                               'merci beaucoup'  Raphael

perhaps I did misunderstand, there has been so much stress on the group of late, I think some of us are decidedly twitchy!  Would be wonderful if we could all make peace and be happy chatters with each and everyone here. Life is too short to be enemies on the same site & a little bit of respect goes a looooong way.

Image result for friends and peace cartoon

No problem Ann

As for the stress - I just think people should not tell each other how to post

Its rude and arrogant, so obvioulsy its easy to take offence

By the same token then one shouldnt be offended if told to pull their head in for such actions

ANyway - yes life is too short.

I just post my say and move on to the next thing that interests me

I find your travels very interesting. You've been to some great places

Raphael it would be nice to keep to the Thread heading though don't you think?

Ann,

Recently spent two months away. We flew to New York did quite a bit of sightseeing and it wasn't my first visit to the good old USA, but the first to Trump Towers which in all honesty I have to say was impressive, if you like a lot of glitz and glamour and even had some meals there. The food is good, expensive, but I don't mind paying for quality.

Image result for trump towers

Then we flew to Hawaii, spent some time island hopping and went on to stay with my wife's nephew who owns a surf shop in Maui and to watch the championships.

Great holiday!

My wife's nephew has his surfing business two minutes from this little spot and each morning that's where I headed for a swim. Boy that's the life, might even consider retiring there!

That sounds a very pleasant holiday, never been to the Big Apple.  We have been to Boston and spent time there and around. Did a journey to Albany on the train with square wheels!  LOL

Went to the Boston Pops....that was good, love music.  I rather like Boston very pleasant people.  We were walking in the antique shop area and got lost. We asked a guy to get us out to where we wanted to go.  'Oh' he says...'your from Australia'! 'Yes' says we....LOL  'I love Sydney had a great time there' then proceeded to show us how to get to where we needed to go.

Yes I could go back to Boston......my late grandfather used to live there he was a US citizen.

Now that looks a hard place to live Reagan!  LOL

Clean sand and no seaweed! How did you stand it Reagan?  LOL

Three cheers for good ole Google....what would we do without it.....

Another place we nearly ended up at this year, well maybe next year.

This melanoma and hubbys operations has put the cybosh on our holiday plans to date. But I would rather he get better first.

Years ago my wife and I did one of those Greyhound tours, now that was a lot of fun and even visited Boston. Only spent a day there if I remember. Yes it seems a nice city.

Hi Reagan - Those photos of Maui are great.. My only overseas trip was on our Honeymoon - it was to Manly Beach. When you only have eyes for each other you don't worry about the scenery. Meeemmoorriieess.

Hola, Manly Beach is one of my favourite places. My sis lives in Manly and when we visit I spend most of the time on the beach.

Hi Cats back in Bangkok looking forward to UK and catching up with Georgie . Did you get photo?

You must be spending a fortune on international roaming Brocky!

Not a penny Ann

LOL  I wonder why?

Talking of spending a penny!!!

Do you remember those turnstyles that people had to go through to use the toilets years ago?

They still have some in some European countries.

But my late aunt use to be President in the UK of the Womens Clubs, their aim was to improve conditions for women and clubs sprang up all over the country.  She told me once so proudly that they stopped the use of those turnstyles because some ladies were so wide they could not fit into them and spend a penny!

Now there is  a bit of useless information for you!  LOL

    Image result for toilet turnstiles

I wonder why you are asking the question ?

Anyway I use the complimentary wi fi at the hotel . And I use What's Ap for all personal communication . Check it out it's free and encrypted end to end .

Only a fool would use international roaming when hotels and airports all provide free wi fi

Only time I use roaming is when I'm making urgent private calls or business calls (which are  reimbursed by my employer)

Brocky - are tou heading to Tioman or giving it a miss ?

Probably will Raph . Down to KL on Wednesday .

Great

Ann has  been with the forum only since January and already she is the most prolific poster.

Unlike your inane ramblings Raphael, her contributions are respected by a vast number of people.

You got that right Banjo and btw raphael, if Ann is scrapbooking, then what do you call toot200 thread and RnR thread on history pictorials. Why pick on one and not the others???? no difference between any of them.

Better look up "scrapbooking" on your ipad while you're in Zanzibar, you dont know what it is LOL
