Labor’s loss blamed on Shorten

The Labor party’s post-mortem analysis of this year’s election loss has pointed the blame squarely at Bill Shorten’s unpopularity.

While the result also pointed to a cluttered policy agenda that it failed to adequately explain to voters, it also said it suffered a drop in support from Christians.

"On the whole, people of faith did not desert Labor, but Labor lost some support among Christian voters – particularly devout, first-generation migrant Christians," the report stated.

"Other religious denominations did not swing decisively one way or the other."

Shorten responded to the report of social media, blaming his lack of popularity on personal attacks during the campaign.

"I note the review considered the relentless and unprecedented multi-million dollar political attacks on me by (Clive) Palmer and the Liberals successfully tarnished my public standing," Mr Shorten posted on Twitter.

"This is an important lesson for any future leader to confront."

What do you think was to blame for Labor’s election loss earlier this year?

These two remind me of the two peregrine chicks in Collins Street LOL

Bill Shorten is seen behind Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese during House of Representatives Question Time earlier this month.

Read this in The Australian today, sadly, I agree,

"More than four months since failing at the unlosable election, Labor remains shell-shocked. MPs are in a daze wondering why they are in opposition. There are growing reservations about Anthony Albanese’s listless leadership. There has been no major change in policy direction or political strategy. The party is ignorant, inert and increasingly irrelevant."

HAHA what a sulky boy is our Bill.

Yep Reag, and if I may add Labor’s approach to the climate crisis was abysmal, I repeat stinking abysmal !!! They refused to oppose the Adani coal mine, and then announced, mid-campaign, they plan to spend $1.5 billion to boost fracking in Queensland and the Northern Territory.  What???  The projected environmental effects of fracking is worse than the Adani mine. What a disaster these people are.

My opinion: Albo knows he can’t cut the mustard and the poor chap is struggling. I firmly believe he is secretly happy being in the shadows.

People being duped by Palmer and ads and greed for coal. Nothing wrong with what Labor offered and they should not change. Already they seem to be caving on coal. My brother saw the LNP with Palmer and Pauline in the same tent at the elections. The cancer help would have been great. The dental help would hav even great.
Lies were swallowed so gullible people as well. Franking credits became something everyone had or might have. Death duties were coming. A promise of money waved over their heads!
ScoMo was unknown as PM so maybe people hoped for something. He was a one man band, the rest were MIA. Labor was a team. Greens promised action on climate change which people did not care enough about. The environment needs to be put first in view of the hundreds of scientists who have called for urgent action. This means coal needs to be phased out.

They lost because the leader didn't lead, the policies were destructive and divisive, the Greens hijacked Labor policy making (the anti Adani circus was a great example of this) and the public didn't vote for them. Really quite simple.

Labor lost because the majority of the Australian electorate are greedy and stupid.

The two former pollies who conducted the review were Craig Emerson, who has some intelligence and the other was little Jay Weatherill the mongrel dog who left SA a basket case and even blew up a power station so an incoming govt couldnt use it. A real low dog act

This country will have to rely on coal produced power because the alternative is currently unaffordable and unreliable

Perhaps people are still laughing about Bill Shorten's electric cars

Bill shorten came up short....  Albanese won't have it easy! Labour needs a leader, not a bland career politician.

agree!  Neither are PM material!

Have I missed something? Everyone is so intense. Election time is a way to go yet!

Who is to blame? Well, firstly, let's blame Shorten for being an unpopular leader, secondly, let's blame the ALP for stupid suicidal policy annoucements, thirdly, let's blame the voter for not trusting the ALP and lastly, let's blame the Coalition for winning.

Labor is solely to blame for their own downfall. Don't understand how anyone can think Clive Palmer, a totally unpopular figure had anything to do with it. This article gives a good insight:

Shorten was immensely unpopular with female voters, the womens mags did a job on him after he walked out on his first wife and this was not forgotten. All us males know what womens memories are like!

You seem to have forgotten the alleged rape of a young girl  at a Young Labor camp near Geelong in the 1980s, which the police did not investigate because of his position in the Labor Party.

as they say no smoke without fire!  no way he got my vote

They are still delusional. Shorten was unpopular but that shouldn't have impacted other candidates. They said that they released too many policies and the voters couldn't understand them all, problem is we could understand them very well to their detriment. Palmer was a no issue, most of his ads were about him and not against others, we laughed everytime one came on the telly until they intruded too much and then they became annoying. I know people on here won't believe me but until this election i had been a life long Labor voter state and Federal ( yes including all the SA disasters ). I am now retired 3 years and the threat of Labor taking my Franking credits reducing my personal income by about $5k per year was the straw that broke the camels back. This may be selfish and my hip pocket but they wanted to do it to too many people. We have always voted with our hip pocket.

Weatherill clearly did NOT lump the ENTIRE blame on Shorten as stated and IF anyone was duped by Palmer they would have the mentality of a two year old and no place in the polling booth

The electorate simply did not like or trust Shorten, Labor's inept policies and most importantly being joined at the hip to the Greens

Listening to Albanese on The Insiders he will follow the same well-worn path even though Morrison is a dog

Yeah, blame Shorten...one man...that's nice and easy isn't it? Me?....I blame our immigrants in NSW many of whom don't really understand our political system; the filthy Murdoch press which has a monopoly, country wide; the Queenslanders who are dependent on mining for a crust;  and the rotten lies told by Clive and other means of advertising; and corrupt Liberal scallywagging in Chinese dominated electorates. To everyone who voted for this miserable government...suffer baby! You will be sorry! It is just awful that the rest of us, who didn't vote for them, have to be so sorry too!
