Kerryn Phelps to stand for Wentworth
Local GP, Sydney City Councillor and former AMA President Dr Kerryn Phelps AM has officially announced her candidacy for the federal seat of Wentworth following the shock departure of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Dr Phelps said the revolving door of leadership in Canberra over the past decade had weakened the standing of politicians and the major parties and it was time to bring back some integrity, stability and common sense to the Federal Parliament.
“I’ve had hundreds of people in Wentworth contact me in the past few weeks to express their anger and frustration over the sacking of Malcolm Turnbull and the new Prime Minister Scott Morrison either cannot or will not explain why Malcolm Turnbull has been replaced,” Dr Phelps said.
Dr Phelps said her track record as a doctor, health communicator and advocate, one of the leaders in the marriage equality campaign, author, and working mother of three, makes for an appropriate skill set for the Federal Parliament.
“The YES Campaign showed what happens when like-minded people come together in the interest of social justice. The campaign for Wentworth will be a similar grassroots campaign by and for the people of Wentworth,” Dr Phelps said.
“The major parties will throw big money and serious resources into this campaign while I will be relying on donations from members of the local community and supporters in the wider Australian community.”
Would you vote for Dr Phelps?
We should all be applauding women like Kerryn Phelps for entering the arena of politics. Not only is she likeable but has a lot of experience as we all know in the medical field. As a former AMA president, I am hopeful she will bring her experience to the table and be able to help fill some of those gaps that exist.
