Keeping Celery & Herbs fresh

Talking to a Chef and he gave me 2 good tips.

If you want to keep celery fresh cut it into suitable lengths. Wrap tightly in aluminium foil and keep in the crisper.

Thought what the heck I'll give it a go. 5 WEEKS LATER it's still AS FRESH and CRISP AS the day I bought it. I even left a couple of leaves on as I thought they would not keep, but to my surprise they are still fresh too.

The second one was if you buy Herbs. Put them in a container with just enough water in the bottom to cover the ends. Stand container inside a plastic bag and seal the top well and they will keep in the fridge for at least a week. Mine lasted 2 weeks.[

Nice tips, Sandikay.

When I buy basil, I've just put the end tips in water as you say, and it does keep for a few days, but have not put the plastic over ...so will try that...thanks.

Yes Koko I have had the same trouble They rarely last more than a few days but by putting the container inside a plastic bag and sealing the top, I use a plastic clip, they can keep for up to week or more.

I used to end up drying them in the microwave but dried herbs are not nearly as nice as fresh ones.

Seggie here. Re keeping celery. Great idea, Sandikay. After THAT brand of sliced cheese going off within a few days, I now keep my cheese in foil and make sure that all air is pressed well and truly out of it. It keeps for at least 2 weeks. Friend brushes her foil over with oil first but I've not tried that. Once upon a time, cheese seemed to keep for a fortnight but now it seems to go off very quickly. For parsley, after washing it, I chop it up and put it into containers of ice. I used to do it in ice cubes but as we love parsley, it's easier to put into slightly bigger containers.
