Julia Banks' exit puts the spotlight on political 'boys club'

Federal MP Julia Banks denounced her party yesterday and moved to the crossbench, leaving the Government two votes shy of a majority.

But it also signalled a  tidal shift in her party and, potentially, in Australian politics.

As reported on the ABC this morning, Ms Banks' exit and her reasons for doing so have renewed debate about the treatment of women in Parliament.

While some, such as Kelly O'Dwyer deny their is any ill-treatment of women in Parliament (the same minister who denied the need for a royal commission into banking and finance), others, such as Labor's Emma Husar, are saying that the treatment of women in Parliament was "years behind" the corporate sector.

This sentiment was only enforced with the sexist slurs slung in the chamber.

"I think the Parliament does have a problem and I don't think it's an ALP problem, I don't think it's a Liberal problem or a Green problem," said Ms Husar.

"It's a men problem."

"To me, I see it very much as a boys' club," said crossbench MP Rebekha Sharkie, referring to the issues in the Liberal Party.

"Certainly in my time working in the Liberal Party several years ago, it was some of the language, some of the behaviours, and really a cultural aspect to it that made me leave working for the Liberal Party."

Ms Husar said that Ms Banks' experience is not isolated, herslef blaming the "white, stale, pale brigade" for trying to end her political career.

The Greens are pushing for a respectful debate on how to improve the standards of debate in the Senate chamber to prevent women facing sexist slurs.

Greens leader Richard Di Natale was suspended from the chamber on Tuesday after refusing to withdraw his comments calling Liberal senator Barry O'Sullivan a "pig", because of remarks he made about Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young.

"If we cannot debate and act civilly in this chamber, that is the most representative chamber in this country, that is the prime legislative chamber of this Parliament, then how can we expect people outside the chamber to debate and argue and disagree respectfully?" said Senate President Scott Ryan.

Senator Di Natale said he wanted to take a stand to stop a pattern of behaviour in the Upper House.

"If we are going to encourage more women to our national Parliament, then we have to set a standard for them that their workplace is a safe one," he said.

"It is completely unacceptable that a woman would need to endure the sort of sexist filth that is being levelled at some of my parliamentary colleagues on a nearly daily basis."

Do you think women are misreated in Parliament? Would you like to see more women in politics?

We need a Margaret Thatcher in our parliament

Now there was a lady with brains and balls . She'd whip this pathetic bunch of Liberal wusses into shape in no time.

Not to mention putting little Billy Shorten in his place

SPOT ON COMMENT.   BY THE WAY WE CAN SEE TURNBOLL'S BEHIND THIS DEFECTION...

I am fed up to the back teeth with these stupid women who wanted to be an MP but then found out its a man's world they are having to compete in and cant hack it.

Its not easy but strong women have no problems. Many having served in the Military. Or been on a Board of a large Company by merit.

Dont try it unless you are able to stand up to the men who will overshout you, ridicule you as they do each other.

As for this woman who whispered her plans to defect to other women in opposing parties even, she is a plant or just a silly woman who thought she was special.

Even maybe made so by that idiot Turnbull. He who bought his PM ship, he first got rejected by Labor because not unionist so tried the Liberals and they needed the money. Proof being the last  1 million he donated just before Abbott won in 2013. Then he took his bat and ball and fled the country and now is doin ghis best to demolish the Liberals and media is helping. Love a drama!

This wont help Australia and the struggling families - or choice of starving to pay bills,  cold in winter pensioners who are now in pain as well as not allowed enough medication.

Margaret Thatcher is dead

Easy to live on $40 a day if you own 5 properties including three investment homes, get $285 a night in travel allowance, more than a newstart recipient gets in a week!

We need for her to stand up for herself without destroying the party.  The more of them pull out the more chance the second worst party gets on. (Labour) or the Worst one the greens.

Pick your poison:  the rich mans club (LNP) of Labor?  Your choice but we already saw what Turnbull did.  Tax cuts fir the wealthy and then he cried poor when the company tax cuts were not agreed to and said he would continue to push for these.

In the end one has to balance the good of the nation and the wealth balance.  Handing money to the rich is not good for the country as these people do not create the wealth which supporters claim.  The other side is that the rich are becoming, like America, opulently rich and the bottom end is refused fair pay and full time jobs so that they become a slave labour workforce.  Australia needs neither.

If I plug Shorten it is not because I support Labor.  I don't.  what I do support is our country as a whole and a fair distribution of the national wealth, something the well off find abhorent.

AS I said PICK YOUR POISON....but don't whinge if the wrong choice is made and you and your chidren are then cannibalised.  My worst fear.

Your mates in Labor dont need to be wealthy. As I say,far too many are members of a communist party or its affiliates. Communism is not equality MICK. Or is it?

Your normal sick comment.  They must have given you a double hate injection when you joined the Liberal Party.  Sad and sounds like you might need to be put down for your own good.

Quote MICK…”what I do support is our country as a whole and a fair distribution of the national wealth, something the well off find abhorent.”

You seem to be ignoring the fact that we have a “fair distribution of wealth” in this country namely.. welfare. Yes, most certainly..all citizens have a right to the necessities of life such as food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, and education.

If we really want to address poverty..we should direct resources toward people who need it most..Australia does that..in comparison with 200 nations Australia undoubtedly targets those in need. We have a world class social safety net.

Australians are very lucky..let us not look a gift horse in the mouth. Our pension has both an income test and an assets test. Unemployment benefits are set at the same level regardless of how much you were earning when you lost your job. We stopped paying the Baby Bonus to millionaires.

Despite all the above..that doesn’t mean we can’t improve. However..when it comes to debating.. it helps to come armed with the facts.

Not so Sophie.  Since Abbott was put into office we have seen working Australians denied any fair inflation adjusted increases whilst the top end has romped ahead with their wealth increasing significantly.

On top of that Turnbull gave himself and other wealthy Australians large tax cuts and then chased a whole lot more with significant company tax cuts.  Please tell me that a cut of $550 for somebosy on $80,000 pa compared to a cut of $7,600 for somebody on $180,000 is fair and just.  And that did not even address what millionaire income earners received.  This is not a fair distribution of wealth.

The above ARE the facts and you may wish to discuss our pension system compared to most other first world pension systems.  Other countries do not put age hurdles to push citizens off a pension when they earn zip.  Nor have they put the retirement age up to 70, which is what the current rats in parliament tried to do.

Tell me about how well pensioners are doing.  Not a patch on some other countries.

MICK..we'll have to agree to disagree ..

"Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored"..Aldous Huxley

A very good quote Sophie, one that should be applied to all political arguements especially.  far too many alternative truths about.

Who can argue with that :)

We need for her to stand up for herself without destroying the party.  The more of them pull out the more chance the second worst party gets on. (Labour) or the Worst one the greens.

Thatcher was a true BITCH!

Thatcher did what our LNO government is and wants to do:  lower taxes for the wealthy and increse them for everybody else.  Have a look at the graph here which shows how it works:

http://theconversation.com/fact-check-have-the-conservatives-always-been-the-low-tax-party-77742

Thatcher also raised the GST from 8% to 15%.  Sound familiar?  And you wonder why the top end has prospered since.  Now playing out in our country as well.

MICK, the top end are not your enemy. Neither is the bottom end or the middle end.

Ha ha, love this letter from the SMH today:

“I can see what the problem is, the LNP has misread the fridge magnet and is being alarmed but not alert.” - Bruce Hulbert, Lilyfield

Of course we all secretly find it so amusing that both Julia Banks and Julie Bishop are playing the women's card since their good mate Malcolm Turnbull was turfed out for revealing that he was a Labor plant.

What did those women say or do for women's rights prior to Turnbull's removal?

I could find their claims more believable if they had this whinge a year ago.

Labor plant?  Is that why Turnbull regularly made nasty vile comments about Shorten in front of the cameras and inside the parliament (to avoid s lawsuit)?

Whilst I have no time for rich man governing Turnbull I find your comment mostly ignorant.  Turnbull was many things but a Labor plant never.  Sounds like you are Abbott's personal troll Adrianus.

What prevents 'their' ABC from asking the complainants who are the alleged bullies?

If the boot was on the other foot...

“Their’ ABC? What does that mean? Who’s ABC?

You jest, the 'fact checking' one with the lean to the inner-city left hipsters of course.

What about addressing the question: 'What prevents 'their' ABC from asking the complainants who are the alleged bullies?".

I don't have a strong opinion either way, but here's an interesting article by the Herald Sun.

https://www.heraldsun.com.au/blogs/andrew-bolt/how-julia-banks-betrayed-women/news-story/e19fa62511062cfce435142d2a8c44cc

Is that a Murdoch rag?

Is there a psychological reason why you ask so many pointless questions Robi?

KIAH..very interesting article, thank you.

Not a pointless question at all, some publications are so biased it is pointless reading them if you want something close to the truth.

You are correct about media bias..I am well aware of that..however..my reason for saying the question is “pointless” is because on many occasions Robi has quite clearly indicated she knows which “rags” are Murdoch’s.

In her usual sarcastic way..she is simply asking a “pointless”question when she already knows the answer..just to get at KIAH.

Out of her designer high heels, does she have any in red that are too small and could be put in a display case for the wonderment of the Basket of Deplorables?

The other Julie donated a pair of way too tight stiletto high heels that could have paid the month's rent for a 'lesser' woman's family.  Strangely, or perhaps not given their elitism, the feminist left applauded Julie for it.

Down with high heels!

Why Robi

Women with great legs look fantastic in high heels

Of course fat  legged women shouldnt bother

Why should women deform their feet to look sexy for men?

deform ?

surely you exaggerate

No I don’t exaggerate. Good men don’t care about the outer persona. They care about who a person is. She doesn’t have to wear high heels to capture his attention. High heels do deform women’s feet!

Glad I'm a bad, bad boy, sure as hell don't want to be stuck with one of these

hmm, looks a lot like lottie, hahaha

ROFL

Robi

You infantalise and patronise women, pretending that they do not have any self-control or agency themselves and cannot make their own choices.

Besides, fashionistas who have expensive tastes in shoes and clothes are doing it for their narcissistic selves and to show off their wealth to other women.

Well said!

LJ, it is a known medical fact that high heel shoes maim feet and put undue injurious pressure on knees and hips. It is simply not natural to the body to walk in them. You can bet your bippy  most women kick the uncomfortable things off as soon as no-one is looking. Of course women are entitled to choose what to wear but I think it is unfortunate that some (not all) women choose to prioritise a cultural belief that stiletto heels make them look sexy and powerful over the known fact that they are damaging their bodies. There are many cute, sexy, creative looking shoes and boots that don’t do the damage inflicted by stiletto heels.

Sophie, you would agree with anyone who attacks me, regardless of the subject matter. Ho hum!

Be fair robinconda, so would you side with anyone who attacks Sophie and her friends.

You and your mates stupid carry ons mean little to me Reagan so I generally overlook them these days. I don’t find any of you amusing (which is how you seem to perceive yourselves), in general I find you all quite vicious. However, I did agree with Cats recently on a thread when she said Sophie should be reported for bringing family into her attack on Sageman ie, insinuated she knew him and his wife in real life and proceeded to give him advice on how he should live his life. So there is no point in you copy/pasting that response (to Cats) because I have beaten you to it.

FGS stop with the whining, that's all you ever do., whine, whine whine. Sounds like an dilapidated old engine on its last legs.

Has hubby bought some hearing aids and can't hear you any more LOL. go ahead report, report, report, what's new?????

Well that is an interesting response Reagan, on a thread about bully boy men!!! I rarely report anything. I’m quite happy for the nastiness of you and your mob of family/friends or whatever you are to remain in the open for everyone to see.

We love it when people report us, then YLC can see what asses the reporters are, LOLOLOL, you remind me of one of our dogs who does not always get his way.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw5M-4Fo2wE

have a nice w/end robbo!

Absolutely disgusting the hanging up and bullying on Robi here

it’s ok to disagree with Robi but you guys and so called lady are just vile

You have been "vicious" to people on the forum for years robiconda, long before we ever joined. Many left because of your constant bullying and harassment.

You'll be ok now babe, you've got lottie to comfort you.

Enjoy your weekend together.

There is no point in continuing any form of communication with liars!!!

Yea, Robi takes his bat & ball & cries all the home

The only "liar" I've witnessed on this forum is yourself ROBI.

You lied to the forum about Micha and all of us being one character. You don't know what the truth is.

Give it a rest Ray

what a bunch of bitchy old ladies you lot are

Poor sod lottie, just waiting for someone to post so you can have some contact with the outside world, LOLOL, go play with your doll. Saw a funny post on the other forum on how "trolls breed" lottie. Kudos to the clever guy who wrote it!

Quote Robi:

“I don’t find any of you amusing (which is how you seem to perceive yourselves)”…    Don’t flatter yourself… we are not here for your amusement..in our opinion you are quite inconsequential..so suck it up!

As for being “vicious”.. who can forget your hounding of me over a period of months because I playfully said a woman's breasts can be taut if she looks after herself. Remember the name calling of “violin breasts?” Who can forget your relentless bullying of a group of posters, myself included, calling us multiheads.  Your posts are still in existence on the internet which will always be a testament not only to your incessant deplorable behaviour on the forum.. but also your inability to recognise and own it.

It is very fitting you chose an avatar depicting a single eye ..suits your personality..since you are only capable of “seeing” one side of a story.. usually the side you favour. You speak of my “attack” on sageman..when indeed he was the one to launch an attack first on Micha..then me. I should be reported? Please go right ahead and as for your usual twisting of my comments with regard to sageman..you should know by now..I never “insinuate”..I always tell it as it is.

So I am also to be reported for giving “advice” to sageman..go ahead please! I might add he is in dire need of any advice I may have given him. Many years ago..I gave you similar advice which you were very grateful for..however..it’s apparent you did not follow up on it. While we are on the subject of “advice” whom do you think you are telling women they shouldn’t wear high heels? Perhaps there is some reason you can’t wear them? Oh..and did you know high heels were actually first worn by men? Also.. not all high heels are stilettos? Educate yourself Robi before making your outlandish statements.

Finally..it may be the best thing for the forum if you would ignore myself and my friends..an impossible task for you I know..needless to say we shall have great pleasure in returning the favour..

No doubt your sad little friend Lothario will soon be chiming in with his inane comments.

Did the "mistreatment" of women in Parliament exist during the time of Malcolm Turnbull? Was it not considered a "boys club" then? Why did Julia Banks choose now to shine the spotlight on herself? Some women try their darndest to undo the good work others do for the advancement of women.

This is not a political issue, it is a workplace rights issue.  If you would not get away with treating someone in a certain way in an average Australian workplace, why would it be OK to do it in an organization that is supposed to reflect Australian values?

To my way of thinking the men and women who expose this behaviour and actually inflict a penalty on those responsible are doing them a favour in the long term.  I can remember all the derrogative comments regarding sharing the workplace with women and the ammended behaviour that was required in the workplace to accomidate them.  It lasted about twelve months or less in my workplace and then it became the norm, it's about time some of the trogladites in parliament were forced into the 21st. century.  We deserve a better class of representative in our Parliament.

Things that are wrong can not be allowed to continue just because that is the way it has always been, to use that arguement will see the demise of any organisation that embrasses it.

What exactly is there to investigate apart from broad sweeping generalisation?

Specifically, the crucial details of who, what, where and when are missing.

One assumes that where the details were apparent, for instance when a very senior member of the Parliament cat-called a man on the other side of politics as a 'poodle', with the obvious inferences of that slang, you and ors who are now so incensed by a generalised politicing sledge would have similarly righteously indignant.

There was a good article in the SMH today written by Peter Hartcher describing what went on behind the scenes after Julia Banks first complained of bullying. It is called “The PM’s problem with female MPs” for anyone who wants to look it up. Apparently she was offered deals like a 3 month sojourn to the UN to silence and remove her. Very interesting article which gives further insight into what she was up against. If people want to read it but find it is behind a paywall, let me know and I’ll copy and paste it for you.

Was this the same Hartcher who was recently on the ABC's 'The Drum', allegedly ranting about some unnamed 'conservative' Liberal members of the federal Parliament being 'terrorists' aiming to 'blow up' the Liberal Party?

'The only greater surprise (maybe not!) was that Julia Baird the host of The Drum', didn't see it necessary to pull him up for his outrageous remarks.

Hmmm, that doesn’t sound like Peter Hartcher LJ. He’s a very level headed and good journalist so I think you perhaps might be muddled up. He has been privy to a lot of insider information relayed in the article above about the bullying problem.
