That is very interesting reading and clearly blows the claim by the Liberal Party that they are good money managers to smithereens. That Jobkeeper arrangement was so slap-dash it is staggering.

The concept cannot be faulted but the actual arrangements made that did not include a refund of a suitable amount in the event that the loss projected did not eventuate was extremely poor management.

Frydenberg will not come out of this well.

For those interested, please also read the following links.

As there have only been two comments to date, I can therefore only assume that the majority are happy to allow the PM to squander mine and yours taxes, on his own political agenda.  Remember, this is not the governments own slush fund, it is taxpayers money.

What is even more disgusting is that Centrelink is now chasing 11,000 welfare recipients, for a total $32 million, but is not prepared to do anything about the $13 BILLION paid out to companies that used the money to pay large CEO bonuses and profits to shareholders.

Totally abhorrent.

These business also included religious schools who showed an increase in profit but do not pay tax on it.

Before going too far with this article, it is perhaps prudent to see who has said what. The New Daily was started by Australian Super, Cbus and Industry Super Holdings and is now controlled by Industry Super Holdings. The writer, Matthew Elmas, has had ties to the CMFEU so we are starting from a base that can hardly be considered impartial. Add to that the legislation for JobKeeper was passed with the support of both sides of the Parliament although Labor now sees fit to renege on it's prior support for what can only be classed as a politicisation of the legislation to suit their purposes.

At no stage has it been said that any of the corporations who received the JobKeeper grants were not entitled to them. The fact that some have made a profit could be because they continued to trade because they had the funds to keep their key staff. It could be argued that without JobKeeper they may have not only lost key staff but lost profits as well. Non political organisations such as the ATO and Treasury have praised the concept and declared that it kept Australian businesses afloat during the various lockdowns. What was done was legal under the legislation and to try and get companies that made a profit after receiving JobKeeper will mean a change to the original legislation.

As with any government grant or loan scheme, there will always be those who choose to rort the system. There is about $2,840,000 identified as overpayments or fraudulent payments and already more than half of that has been recovered.

Sue

The Govt ATO website states that companies claiming Jobkeeper had to show a decline in turnover.  Many companies that received Jobkeeper actually increased their turnover, during lockdown.

To defend such a rip off of public money, legal or otherwise, would seem to me that you are a supporter of yet another rort that this government has engaged in.

Don't suppose you opened your eyes to see Harvey Norman is returning his???

You're hoisted by your own petard, Upsadaisy, "The Govt ATO website states that companies claiming Jobkeeper had to show a decline in turnover. " is totally correct. The criteria for getting the grant was a reduction in turnover in comparison with the income in 2019, there is no reference to any turnover/profit/loss after that date. If a business made a profit it means that they kept employees and reduced the expenditure for welfare payments to the unemployed.

Harvey Norman has paid SOME of his debt NOT ALL

I do keep my eyes open and yes I know about Harvey Norman, but he initially refused to return one cent of it.

He's paid $6 million back, after receiving approximately $22 million!!!
