Is your favourite magazine closing?

On Tuesday, Bauer Media Australia announced that it was closing eight of its magazine titles due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19.

Affected titles include Harper’s BAZAAR, ELLE, InStyle, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Good Health, NW and OK!

Bauer temporarily paused these publications in May due to the significant impact of travel restrictions on transit-reliant titles such as NW and OK!, and declining advertising revenue to support Harper’s BAZAAR, ELLE, and InStyle, as well as Men’s and Women’s Health and Good Health.

Bauer Media chief executive Brendon Hill said it was a challenging time for media companies.

““We, like many other media companies, have deeply felt the impact of COVID-19,” Mr Hill said. “The reinstatement of these titles and teams was always dependent on the advertising market bouncing back and the return of domestic and international travel.

“Despite promising signs from advertisers in recent weeks, this has not outweighed the medium term outlook for these titles.

“Additionally, with a second lock-down in Victoria and minimal travel, it is not feasible to sufficiently distribute NW and OK! without transit channels.

“The financial impact of these factors and the ongoing economic uncertainty makes the return and sustainability of these titles no longer viable. We have been forced to reset and future-proof the business like all of the media industry has.”

Is your favourite magazine among the eight titles that are being shut down? Do you still read magazines? Is there a future for the magazine industry?

Mainly I read magazines is if I am in a waiting room but have been know to buy one if I am travelling long journey on a train.

For my craft work I borrow them from the Library.

Yes like Suze I only buy a magazine if we are going on a long haul flight; gone are the days of purchasing a magazine weekly, there is rubbish in them and they are too expensive.  If I see them in the waiting room of a doctors I leave them alone they are good breeding grounds for germs.

I gave up buying glossy magazines ages ago. Not only are they expensive but why pay all that money to look at advertising. I like to get the free ones now from Coles and Woolworths with great recipes in them. Also Bunnings have a free one every month with handy hints.

Thanks Hola

Must remember to ask next time I go to Bunnings

Ridiculous prices , 75% ads and the 'latest' gossip about who is having an affair with someone else's partner or walking the street in sloppy clothes and no make up . Geez give me a break and don't insult my intelligence. The Bulletin used to be worth reading sometimes and the Post was brilliant for the large crossword but they were both closed down years ago and I haven't bought a magazine since .

Never buy magazines. I don't even read them off public tables or waiting  rooms...too unhygenic. I always carry a book when I can or google on my smart phone is my best friend!

I only buy Better Homes and Gardens

No, I don’t buy magazines anymore, trash, pash and waste of cash.

I had a subscription to Good Health magazine but it only had articles for women, nothing at all for men, plus full of advertisements for female products. I wrote to the editor that the magazine was biased, and was told to buy Men's Health magazine. I tried it but it was full of stuff like muscle building, how to get laid, nothing at all about general health and well being. Those magazines were rubbish.

Just like computers creted unemployment, the internet has damaged magazines and newspapers. Any business can only exist if its product(s) is bringing in more money than it costs to produce. If not, stop producing tha product that is losing money and move on to a more profitable product. It's business 101.
