Is the reef wrecked?

A new report reveals that under the Federal Government’s watch the long-term outlook for the Great Barrier Reef has gone from ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ for the very first time.

“This report makes it abundantly clear that climate change is the major factor driving the deterioration of one of our most precious natural icons,” said the Climate Council’s CEO Amanda McKenzie.

The Government’s caretaker of the reef - the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority - releases a report every five years that provides an assessment of the reef’s health, the pressures it is under and its likely future.

The report states: “Climate change is escalating and is the most significant threat to the region’s long-term outlook.

“The challenge to restore reef resilience is big, but not insurmountable. However, it requires mitigation of climate change.

“Gradual sea temperature increase and extremes, such as marine heatwaves, are the most immediate threats to the region as a whole and pose the highest risk,” it notes.

Accelerating climate change is driving an increase in the number of marine heatwave days each year, placing global reefs at serious risks.

The unprecedented bleaching events on the Great Barrier Reef in 2016 and 2017 resulted in mass coral mortality, with the 2016 bleaching event at least 175 times more likely to occur due to intensifying climate change.

“Climate change threatens not only the Great Barrier Reef, but the North Queensland tourism industry and the 64,000 workers and communities who depend on it.  We must work urgently to protect the tourism industry,” said the Climate Council’s head of research, Dr Martin Rice.

“The Federal Government must address the root cause of the problem and, with other countries around the world, rapidly and deeply reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Dr Rice.

“We must stop burning and exporting coal, oil and gas,” he said.

“Australia is the sunniest and one of the windiest countries in the world. We have the opportunity to be a global renewables powerhouse, creating new business opportunities and work for thousands of Australians,” he said.

Should more be done to protect the Great Barrier Reef?

No it is not wrecked it is in very good condition - both inner and outer reefs.

Also the climate alarmists don't acknowledge that Australia is moving closer to the equator - the tectonic plates are slowly moving us north - so obviously we will get into warmer waters!

The reef will adapt to this as it is a slow process and the corals will acclimatise to their new environment.

Blimey Bridgit - since 1960's the plan has been to dumb down the kids and it has worked all too well. So lies are told and far too many listen and agree.

Cant expect today any different when we know since latest Naplan - 9 yr olds cannot read nor write and as for maths - well lost without a calculator - and so it continues. We were low on th elist but even lower this year. ]

Yet more than 30 billion extra they say spent this year on education.

More spent on education over last 20 years. Would buy us 2 fleets of these new Nuclear Subs and then some. Didnt do the kids much good

We here are not of that generation all left school when taught properly so can judge for ourselves - unless like far too many - fall for the lies like this latest CC big lie about the Reef.

Peter ridd won his court case when Uni sacked him for reporting its well and Judges agreed and said give him back his job. Dont think they did and ongoing story re courts again.

the Reef is in good health - what isnt is our democracry it is under attack by the Left who want to destroy it in all western nations.

What is under attack today is Christianity and the white race - strangely from the left orientated whites who hate and loath us.

You work out why - I gave up way back.

Yes! great responses Bridgit and Finn.

The 'theoretical' data (supposedly from complex algorithms that are tweaked to skew results) has been disproven by empirical data. I only just this week, read an article by one such example where one climate alarmist would not release his alarmist data or  method. In all cases, scientific experiments should be be able to be reproducible. You can figure out why this particular proponent would not divulge his data.

Prof Ridd was courageous to speak out against his colleagues. Only this week made comments to the same effect. That is, the reef is actually healthy and thriving.

We always seem to be swamped by doomsayers who are only intent on pushing their barrow on climate change. The truth of the Great barrier Reef is that it is alive and healthy in most places and in those places where bleaching has occurred, the Reef will recover. Scientific studies have shown that the Reef has died and been reborn 5 times in the past 30,000 years. There was a time that where the Reef is now was dry land. There is climate change, of that there is no doubt, the argument is centred around whether mankind can make sufficient changes to counteract a natural phenomenon.

Much is made of the bleaching effect but when it occurs, the Reef generally recovers within 10 years so bleaching does not mean that the Reef is dying, it means that a part of it has changed for a time. The Reef is 2,300km long and when the statitics are gathered, only a small part of that huge size is affected by bleaching. We read that it's essential that we stop burning and exporting coal, gas and oil but what will that achieve. Unemployment will soar and the standard of living will fall and by how much will all of this affect the Earth's temperature. Bleaching of the Reef is a natural event as is the rise and fall of temperatures over many thousands of years and now we have some arrogant people suggesting that we can interfere with nature.

Well said sir! You took the words out of my mouth.

Ditto Horace - said it all.

"We read that it's essential that we stop burning and exporting coal, gas and oil but what will that achieve."

What a monumentally stupid question! Answer: it will militate against rising CO2 levels and global warming, which is causing ocean temperatures to rise - a significant factor in coral destruction. Duh!

My question was rhetorical, Intellego, and was answered in the next sentence. As the article was about Australia and Australia produces 1.3% of carbon dioxide I am unable to see why giving up our lifestyle will alter anything worldwide. The amount of CO² in the atmosphere is 3.62% and the amount that is man made is 3.4% of that, or 0.1230%. Bear in mind that Australia only produces 1.3% of CO² so that means our contribution is 1.3% of 0.1230%, or 0.0016% For this monumental difference, you want Australians to forgo their lifestyle while the rest of the world carriers on as normal.

It will take millions of years for the continent to move significantly and yes under normal circumstances the reef would adapt.  It will not be able to adapt if a situation arises where millions of years are compressed into 50 or even 100 years.  Bleaching is also a normal event happening intermittently during the life of the reef but not continuously and not every year.  The reef will not survive this anymore than we would if the everyday temperature shot up to 60 degrees Celisus over a 10 or 20 year period.  We could adapt because we have technology.  The reef does not.  When it comes down to it I believe the experts.

So would I  if they didnt lie to suit the plans of the UN to govern the world once its chaotic enough and we cry out for Law & Order to be restored.

Sadly they are making it chaotic and 1951 Refugee Convention which John Stone advised John Howard to get out of in 2001 or so - is the main cause of that chaos.

Send enough of the wrong sort of refugee to a place and it will alter that place and fool enough people there already with lies and continue on to get their way unless enough are awake to the danger.

Biggest scam ever is AGW proven not to be true but they carried on -changed the name to Global Warming - and then Climate Change when not enough were foolish enough to believe.

52 scientists who signed off on the paper the UN presented to IPCC said it had been altered and they never said things that were there making AGW true.

then NASA apologised for leaving out Siberia and MOngolia when modelling the termperatures on which based.

Strangely that "mistake" was severe cold temps left off which made the remainder look warmer.

Petition was signed by these scientists and like a lot of stuff and lies about this - it has all 'been disappeared' off Google where we relied on them collecting and keeping for us all. But then Google now admit a bias to the Left once again and so it goes on.

Lies are told and as many dont use or were never taught the basic original think things out for oneself - they follow like sheep.

And so it goes and we are losing or were until May 18.

Hope is there now that this lot will grasp the nettle and start off new Helli fired Coal stns like the rest are building by the hundred and why we're selling so much coal. Not Nuclear another lie in the making this time even Sky seems to have fallen for it.

I suspect someone somewhere - make these 'new safe nuclear re-actors' and spread a few $$$ around to make sure they get more $$$ too

Cynical? thatswhat drives stuff today - shame is we, the majority,  dont get $$,  just end up paying out hard earned $$$ for it. Like we]re paying for the lies of CC and renewables.

Pity Vic this summer-  cost of $8200 each household when renewables and not enough coal base load power left - and have to buy it off NSW and Tassie.

What utter TOSH, Finn. AGW has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt. Only dumb Right-wing ignoramuses assert otherwise. And while you're about it, put on a tin-foil hat to deal with your anti-UN paranoia.

Intellego, please calm down. This is a forum that should allow debate without someone attacking the member for their post. If you disagree with a post. Debate it in a respectful way. Please don't be so aggressive. Use facts and not putdowns as it will always get you further. I feel that continuing in this fashion you lose people to our cause and that would be a shame. I feel the reply you posted above is an example of why we fail to deliver our message. We will win, we just need to be smart about how we do it. Stay well comrade

The bullsh*t being told here - that the reef is in good health - is utterly unbelievable. On a regular basis I see footage on the television of the reef being destroyed by bleaching, the Crown-of-Thorns starfish, and by rising ocean temperatures due to global warming. And the problem is getting worse thanks to the nefarious nincompoop LNP federal government allowing big business to ruin the reef with its waste. WAKE UP!

 Intell-e-go - you've been had

Again, its plastic floating thickly on just offshore sunny oceans in Bali not Australia.

Where we do send our plastic waste the be processed.

Unfortunately too much gets thrown into the ocean and currently our Gov is contemplating changing this because of their inability to control this plastic.

Same thing seen on regular pics of supposedly at coal fired power stantions shown as smoke rising when its steam used to drive the turbines put through cooling towers,  and steam rises - but most goes back to water and once again drives the turbines. Water lost is replaced etc.

Unfortunately Finn you have shown a lack of understanding of power generation technology and its implications.

Perhaps such inaccuracy is also present in some, if not all of your posts which might, by some people, considered to rants.

The rise in sea water temeratures has happened much more quickly than anyone anticipated and while it endangers static forms of sealife the mobile variety  such as fish move with that rise in temperture. This is the likely cuse for some species been see further south in the ocean as they can only exist within a certain temersture band.

While there have been changes in climate over the life of Earth this change we are seeing now is happening faster than ever happened before and is not giving the normal period of adjustment life had in the past. This is a very complex situation and if humans are a part of the problem, as evidence suggets they are, we should not hide our head in the sand and think it will all just do away.

Well said Tanker.

Yes there should be more done to protect the Great Barrier Reef, it is responsible for billions of dollars in the tourist industry and it would be a huge loss to the economy.

It never ceases to amaze me that climate change deniers jump on these topics and keep saying the same thing over and over.

We will be suffering more from climate change as time goes on and we need to stop arguing about what is causing it and get on with doing all we can to slow it down not speed it up, which is what we have been doing with man made damage to the environment.

Rain forests are important to the healthy survival of the planet, likewise coral reefs. The loss of both of these could have a devastating impact on the planet. Rainforests absorb CO2 and release the oxygen we depend on for survival.

Without coral reefs the oceanic ecosystem collapses, again, with devastating effects on the planet. Time is running out for coral reefs around the world. There are credible reports about half of the world’s coral reefs have been killed off in the past 30 years. A third of the Great Barrier Reef died during the 2016 heatwave. Climate change is causing damage and the reefs can’t keep up with natural restoration.

If you have been tracking and visiting the GBR and diving there for the past few years, you would have seen for yourself the damage done. All is not lost however, and the reef is not wrecked. Coral reefs can heal themselves with time but even the most rapid growing coral takes around 15 to 20 years to fully recover. That can happen and is happening with the GBR, providing as much as possible is done to protect it not only by our governments but by everyone of us doing our bit.

I agree we need to do all we can, nature just cannot keep up with man made destruction. We are also clearing phenomenal amounts of tree's many of which are koala habitat and extending the desert closer and closer to the coast, very sad state of affairs.

This week I met a guy in his (maybe) 70's who has lived in Vanuatu on an outer island for some years. He told me the reef degradation can be seen in years, not decades or centuries. The comment on coral reefs (plural) not just the GBR rings true and is truly frightening to those who listen AND process.

Some here have spoken in denial of what is really happening to our reef and our planet. Does humankind have the capacity to overcome the ills we have beset upon our planet or HAVE WE FAILED this amazing place which has provided us with the most miraculous life? And have we failed future generations? Is it too late? I hope not but must admit I am giving up hope.

Wow passionate post Ny19 this is what we need to shake the deniers. It is terrifying! What you need now is to post what actions you personally and family are doing to save the planet. What are the sacrifices you are making to save planet earth? Have you and family radically reduced or removed all Co2 emmissions. I would like to know so I can follow what you have done in your day to day life to reduce the damage to our planet. Your posted actions will show the deniers that we can make a change! In the past, in history too many preach without ever trying to live the life they proscribe on others. I hope Ny19 you're not one of those. With respect

One thing we should do is stop the government sending our rubbish to another country, it's disgusting and immoral.  Get some bright sparks to figure out how to make it into something useful.

Toot2000, there are already industries waiting to use it but there is no Government support and they need investements to get going.
