Is the new code to block scam calls working?

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has revealed that telcos have blocked 55 million scam calls to Australian phone numbers since new rules requiring telcos to detect, trace and block scam calls were introduced in December 2020.

This number includes nearly 11 million 'Wangiri' scam calls, where scammers ring once from an international number, resulting in high premium phone charges for those who call back, and 44 million calls using spoofed or made-up numbers.

The Reducing Scam Calls Code (the code) was developed by the telco industry in response to ACMA's Combating Scams Action Plan.

ACMA's Fiona Cameron said the new data showed the code is beginning to bite.

"Each scam call blocked is one less potential victim and a step towards rebuilding confidence for Australians that it's safe to answer a ringing phone," Ms Cameron said.

"I am pleased to see the code having a real impact in its initial months, particularly in busting the 'one ring' Wangiri and Calling Line ID spoofing scams.

"However, this isn't a silver bullet. We are seeing scammers become increasingly sophisticated so it's important that telcos stay vigilant and keep up the fight.

"We expect to see the number of blocked scam calls increase as telcos enhance their technology and capability to protect their customers.

"Consumers also play their part in stopping scammers. If something sounds too good to be true, it's probably a scam. If someone you've never heard from is asking for your personal details, it's probably a scam. The best thing you can do is hang up," she said.

According to ACCC Scamwatch data, Australians lost over $48 million to scam calls in 2020. Phone scams accounted for 48 per cent of all scams reported.

Phone scams are an ACMA compliance priority, and telcos face penalties of up to $250,000 for breaching ACMA directions to comply with the code.

If you think you've been scammed, contact your bank and phone company immediately.

Do you think the code to block new scam calls is working? Have you noticed a reduction in the number of scam calls that you receive?

Do you think the code to block new scam calls is working? Have you noticed a reduction in the number of scam calls that you receive?

NO ... I've received more scam calls recently than ever before, particularly from OS numbers on my mobile. Phone rings briefly, then stops ... I block the callers, mainly numbers from Ukraine and Lithuania at the moment.

Nope, can't say that I have.  It's early days I guess, so time will tell, but I tend to think that the genie is out of the bottle and not going back in any time soon.

Definitely not, still getting unsolicited calls on the landline (which I don't answer, goes to answer machine), including one from Nigeria using 9 numbers which looks very much like an Australian number till you count the numbers.

After 25 years with a mobile, this is the 1st time I've had unsolicited calls on it (9 in a week), mainly 2-6 seconds of rings and they hang up.  Not sure whether it's because I've changed my provider or I've got a new mobile.  The numbers that ring from all seem to start with 048885 or they are private number.

Increased spam/scam calls on the mobile in the last few weeks, 20 odd years same provider and number.

What about the scams coming through the Internet? They use Microsoft accounts to deliver a "Notification". Most of these appear to be to do with "Bitcoin" crap. I was getting 15 to 20 notices a day till I shut these down with my windows settings. I also received some with a "Change your Phone" idea. Do NOT ever click or open these notifications.

From my time in the telecomms industry there would be a technical method feasible whereby the Telcos and/or the NBN can charge for those calls (charge the caller) and charge heavily.  They would soon slow down or cease altogether.

Been in our current home for 4 years now, new build and new phone number (not a listed number)........have not had one scam call, in fact NO CALLS at all.

Scammers have not been blocked by the new code . Actually I received 2 calls today from mobile numbers from foreigners claiming i have had unusual o/s transactions from banks i dont bank with . When i asked for details ie. the name on the account or a/c number they hang up . Scammers !!

We get two calls a day to the landline with no one there. About one daily to the mobile. if a scam does ring, usually from "Telstra" or about solar panels, then, if time allows, I keep them talking as they are not then worrying some one else.

I have probably received more scam calls in 2021 than ever before. If there is a code in place, I don't think it's working. I generally recognise a scam straight away and hang without saying anything beyond "hello".

I have probably received more scam calls in 2021 than ever before.

Have to agree with that Jimy ... painful.

I have resorted to buying an answering machine. I have up to 5 calls a day ,the caller hangs up immediately the answering machine kicks in. If a genuine call the caller will leave a message.

A lot of the scammers use random number generation. They ring every number .. 0000001, 0000002, 0000003 etc.  to 99999999. When you answer they know they've got a valid phone number. Same with a mobile phone.
