Is he really up to it?

I am starting to question the capabilities of Kevin Rudd to hold the country's top job.

I know I will have his supporters (of which I was one) say I am Labor bashing and they haven't been there long enough to accomplish anything BUT lets look him over. He is a survivor, having survived scandals of his association with Brian Burke, his getting fall-down drunk and allegedly groping a stripper, he has survived accusations of screaming foul mouthed obscenities at his staff behind closed doors and demanding public servants presence at his office to keep them waiting for hours and even being sent away unseen. There are more.

What has he accomplished? (not necessarily in order)
He said Sorry -- OK he gets a big tick for that
He has continued the assistance to Aboriginals -- having limited success in stopping child abuse
He introduced the hike in alcopop tax -- didn't work
He has decimated the Solar industry in cutting rebates
He introduced tax cuts -- completely ignored Pensioners and the Disabled. Not happy Kev
He signed up his mates to the River Murray agreement -- hasnt seen one drop of water flow to SA and could bring down the SA government
He has a introduced a Petrol Minister -- has no power to do anything except talk.
He plans to hurriedly introduce his Emissions Trading System -- the Globe hasnt been warming for 10 years. We will be going it alone to our detriment in trading with countries who arent interested.
He plans to introduce Fuel Watch, Supermarket Watch, Childcare Watch, Housing Affordability Watch -- will achieve very little, is regarded as frittering around the edges of easing our cost of living, its just watch, watch, watch.
He still hasnt told Garrett to buy a suit that fits him. LOL
There are more but I think you get my point?

As I have said before John Howard HAD to go and he should have not welched on his agreement with Costello to take over, BUT have we thrown the baby out with the bathwater?

Any takers?

Didnt vote for him, didnt want him, and think he is all show and glitter but no substance.

I now await the wrath of you all to fall on me

Yes I voted for him--time will tell--but Howard HAD to go--as did Costello--

You wont get any 'wrath' from me Liana, thats what having an opinion is all about, and I agree with the 'glitter and no substance'.

as did Costello--

PlanB do you think Costello is better than the current crop of ego driven Liberals? There are that many walking around with knives in their backs its not funny.

Costello was a good 'performer' in Parliament with the wit and acid tongue to harass the Opposition and at times make them look really inept , BUT I think his continual bl***y smirk put people off.

but I do think that the Howard lot were right out of touch--and as far as Abbott and Pyne go well I CAN NOT stand either of them and never could--Pyne had the aged care--portfolio--and he even said he “couldn’t stand taking to older folk"--

Once again I totally agree. Pyne believes in his own mind he is leadership material and nothing could be further from the truth, that's why Howard didn't give him a Ministry earlier. Its a different story when an election looming they all have countless cups of tea in aged care residences gathering votes from those of frail mind who are easily duped -- it makes my blood boil!

From what I have read Joe Hockey was against the Work Choices policy but when given the portfolio, from I think that whining Kevin Andrews, he did his best to sell something he didn't believe in which I believe deserves a half mark for commitment.

Oh YES they can be very hypocritical---Also about Pyne--HOW the hell can someone of his age have ANY idea about the aged--and what difficulties they have to deal with--I watched him on "Insight" on SBS some time ago when they were talking of euthanasia--and his total

unsympathetic veiw on these made me so mad--maybe if he had seem many suffer with a dreadful--terminal sickness and suffer so much--or if it happened to him--he would maybe change his closed mind--after all if we have a loved pet we would NOT allow them to suffer--now each to his own in this Euthanasia debate--BUT at least he could have shown MORE empathy to those involved and at least listened

I did not vote for Rudd owing to past experiences with Labour governments running our country. I think he is a mirror man just like Steve Bracks was in Victoria. Always looking into it and ordering inquiries.

Don't be surprised if the annual $500 payment to pensioners (which the Libs brought in) disappears down the track. My suspicion is we received it this year because it would have caused an uproar if it was cancelled.

As for the emissions tax and saving the planet......we are only producing 1% of the world's green house gas.

We will only be paying more taxes, and will end up a third world country as more and more of our big businesses take their jobs overseas.

Shame on you Mr. Feelgood Rudd.

If we can ignore politics for a moment and look at practicality, I am forced to agree with Brendan Nelson. My understanding is that he is currently proposing a policy of doing nothing about climate change unless the worlds major polluters (U.S., India, China etc) also embrace effective and credible policies to also limit their emissions.

We would indeed be fools to try to act alone in this global calamity. We would be sacrificing our economic and developmental future as well as lowering our standard of living.

Precisely Kfchugo. From press reports it seems Obama is talking about starting Emissions Trading IF he gets elected. But then again knowing pollies he would possibly say anything to get elected. McCain doesn't seem to get much coverage so who knows what he thinks?

That would still leave India and China etc out of it. As we only produce around 1% of the world's emissions (and I dont know what percentage the USA puts out) it would still leave us with an uneven international trading field. On his website Andrew Bolt criticises the government for pursuing this line because the world is not warming, according to scores of scientists, and hasnt been for 10 years. I dont agree with most of what Bolt says but this makes you think.

It has emerged today that Howard received a report that electricity would go up by 25% if ETS was delayed, so he was forced to offer a start date of 2012 at the last election. This hike would be caused by "investor hiatus from the uncertainty over when the scheme would start, with the new coal-fied generators put on hold and reduced level of competition in the market with generators able to increase their offers and achieve higher pool prices". So its nothing to do with the planet its all about investment, much like the Murray it seems.

I tend to agre with this--

I agree also, thought for a while its all for big business and investments

Sure consider the Banks. The get burnt in the US with the housing market/mortgage collapse so they regularly inch up interest rates here NOT because the market or Reserve Bank decrees it but because of the banks insatiable thirst for profits.

There apparently is a real bun fight in trading water licences/allowances on the Murray which is starving SA.

Well, I voted for him, and, as you anticipated, I feel it is a bit rich to be bagging him after just eight months in the job. I notice you neglected any mention of Rudd getting rid of the infamous Workchoices, the single biggest reason why he was elected. That should have been top of your list, instead of being ignored altogether. For this reason, and with all due respect, I have my doubts that you ever were a Labor supporter.

As a former electricity supply worker, I have rather strong opinions on the ability of renewable energy to replace coal or nuclear as an electricity base load supply. It is my opinion that money spent on solar rebates would be far better spent on a central solar system supplementing the existing grid. So, reducing the solar rebate may be a more astute move than you realise. But why should you care, as from your ill informed comments on global warming you are obviously a climate change denier anyway.

You also ignore Rudd's getting our troops out of the disaster that is Iraq, a war we were taken into on a lie by Howard. Enough said, I think, about where your real political sympathies lie.

There's a lot more, but somehow I doubt you want to hear anything positive about Rudd and the Labor Government, so I'll leave it at that..

I think Rudd has done well and worked hard for the short time he has been in--
