"I was only nineteen"

I have been watching again the performance of the song "I was only nineteen" and particularly watched the faces of our troops, I had a lump in my throat and a sack full of memories.
.
May I say how proud it makes me feel to see these young people giving their all for their country, and would like to commend them and their parents for being such wonderful people.

Tonight I will probably watch other young people fight drunkenly in the streets and just wish they too could appreciate what others are doing.

So, a big Thank You to our troops,
to our firefighters
to our surf lifeguards and to all those who keep us as safe as they can.
You are appreciated. Lolih

Gee...... I must REALLY be getting old. I can empathise with the above comments and make the almost universally unpopular suggestion that we should maybe again consider "conscription". Our youth of today (with many exceptions) have a fairly poor sense of involvement in society and very limited experience with discipline.

Perhaps a short stint in our military (as is VERY common on other countries) would (a) broaden their tiny minds, (b) instill some sense of community, (c) acclimate them with the value/benefit if discipline and (d) better prepare our nation for future conflict.

 I couldnt agree more with you both. Its so sad to see the anger & even hate ,we see in so many of the youth of today.

Then we see the better side of the young who are serving the country in so many ways.

Why, cant they all be the same.

As a disabled elderly lady, I am appalled at the lack of respect & manners on the street today, Yes, kfchugo, I am with you, bring on the Cadets etc. that used to be in our schools,it cant do any harm.

Merry Xmas All.

Hello tweety, I don't think they really see us, they seem to live around us and yes, I also think some kind of camp situation could work.

Recently I started playing Texas holdem poker at our local R.S.L. (it's free to play) and at first the young ones treated it as a joke - until I beat the lot of them, now I am a Legend Grandma and am treated differently.

I think it is quite a complex problem and needs lots of different treatments.I actually feel sorry for some of the young ones, but am petrified of others.

Congratulations lolih. I know a few older people surprise the younger generation with what we can

achieve. I am sure your game keeps your mind active and your wit in tact.

I so wish many of my friends from some years back would get computer wise but 4 say "cannot be bothered" or "know nothing about computers" Not that difficult to learn but what a world it opens up for people of all ages.

All the very best - hope you are enjoying this forum and keep posting.

Phy.

 Thanks Phyl
