"I was only nineteen"
I have been watching again the performance of the song "I was only nineteen" and particularly watched the faces of our troops, I had a lump in my throat and a sack full of memories.
.
May I say how proud it makes me feel to see these young people giving their all for their country, and would like to commend them and their parents for being such wonderful people.
Tonight I will probably watch other young people fight drunkenly in the streets and just wish they too could appreciate what others are doing.
So, a big Thank You to our troops,
to our firefighters
to our surf lifeguards and to all those who keep us as safe as they can.
You are appreciated. Lolih
Gee...... I must REALLY be getting old. I can empathise with the above comments and make the almost universally unpopular suggestion that we should maybe again consider "conscription". Our youth of today (with many exceptions) have a fairly poor sense of involvement in society and very limited experience with discipline.
Perhaps a short stint in our military (as is VERY common on other countries) would (a) broaden their tiny minds, (b) instill some sense of community, (c) acclimate them with the value/benefit if discipline and (d) better prepare our nation for future conflict.
