How to speak Australian

a pair of thongs with an australian flag on the beach

In case you haven’t realised, Australian English is known for being a tad, well… ‘lazy’. We’re notorious around the world for being laid back folks, always ready for a cold beer and a long yarn. And when you get us talking, our penchant for abbreviating words really comes through.

For example, if you asked how my weekend was, I might say: I went out with a mate for brekky on Satdee and then we went home, I put on my trackies and we listened to Accadacca all arvo.

This funny video demonstrates just how far Aussies have gone when it comes to abbreviating almost everything we say.

It was fun to watch realise how many words I find myself using day-to-day.

What about you?

Although I am an Australian I think any of the abbreviations sound like baby talk and deliberately avoid saying them, particularly overseas as the last thing I would want is for someone to think I'm related to Paul Hogan or some other ocker yabbo.

I find myself agreeing with you Fast Eddie. I think the only time I would really use these abbreviations would be tongue-in-cheek for a bit of fun with friends.

Australian Lingo will be a lost art in a few years...

We will all have foreign accents and wont understand a word anyone says...

Not that I do now...

WTF...THX4 Reading..

(Well, That's Fantastic, Thanks for reading...)  LOL

I find it slower to read the texting abbreviations than what is in the video, I do have a problem with abbreviated words though.....

And they wonder why people can't spell these days....

I agree with you Fast Eddie alot of what they said on that video Ive never heard of & wouldnt say to embarrassing.
