How to deflea a flea infested home

I recently catsat for two weeks not realising the cat had fleas. After the cat went I was soon being eaten alive by cat fleas. My feet, ankles, and lower legs were in a horrific and painful state, indicating the fleas were in the carpet. The reason I didn‘t notice anything when the cat was there was that cat fleas prefer their cat host. However, when the cat goes they are happy to feed off another host such as a human or a dog.

I had to take antihistamines daytime and at bedtime. Wear my kneehigh surgical socks which are tightfitting. Smear Bushman‘s Deet insect repellent underneath. Wear trousers and long sleeves. Let off Mortein Flea canister bombs in every room, the 9 month ones not the 6 months - they treat both the adult fleas and the eggs. And pick up Indorax spray from a vet to spray on carpet, upholstery etc.

Vacuum zealously and wash any beding, clothes, curtains etc on hot water cycle.

Actually the Mortein flea bombs alone seemed to do it. But got the Indorex just in case, it has IGR too to stop the eggs ever hatching and then you can just vacuum eggs and dead fleas up. Spray inside of vacuum bag with Indorex before dis posing of contents into a plastic bag and then into your council bin. Spray inside plastic bag too.

Luckily I didn‘t have to deal with the yard as I never let the cat out.

With all that going on bookwyrm I hope you remembered to let your friends know so they can de flea the cat.

What a nightmare for you bookwyrm. Good you got onto fixing the problem and all is well now. Would be difficult to know where to start :(

Poor cat also.

How do you keep your cats flea free Phyl? I've heard that traditional poisons used for dogs (flea collars etc) are toxic for cats. Mind you, we used to keep a flea collar on our dear cat and she lived to a ripe old age. It was the thing to do back then because it wasn't considered toxic as it is now. Would love to have another cat but hubby is against it because of the bird life.

Robi. Our two cats are 8 years old now and I have never looked for a flea but they do not scratch themselves (just our furniture). New leather recliners but now a few years old are the pits now lol.  Tried whatever we have ever heard of, to stop them and have to say not nearly as bad as they were _citrus spray seems to work sometimes.

I guess maybe because  they only have access to our small back garden and not a sandy area, is why they have no fleas - maybe just luck. We take them to the Vet for their injection and worming tablet and check up every year.

I could never allow a cat to roam and catch birds. Ours go outside and we let the birds know they are coming out, in a cat escape proof back yard my clever husband made, and when they come inside, the birds all come back. We must sound like a pair of dills calling out to the birds "cats turn out in the garden" but it all works for us, the cats and the birds lol.

Have you seen the fabulous cat scratching gizmo that will be on sale at Aldi next week? Looks like real fun for a cat.

Bookwym we once had fleas  years ago no fleas on the puppy we got it so must have picked them up from sand. I became quite paranoid about eradicating them as the eggs can survive in hidden crevasses so 10 days after first bombing I flea bombed the house again when any hidden eggs would be hatching, worked fine and although have had dogs all the time since then they have never got them again and I have never had to use any treatment on the dogs again.

I got bitten today and caught the flea in the act so I will bomb again, if it worked for you.

Woke up with another flea bite on my ankle so will definitly bomb again. Thanks for the tip, Vivity.

Havn't seen the newest cat scratcher Robi but bought two at Aldi some time back when they had a good special. Will check it out as they love their scratchers.

_____________

Viv. sandy areas are renowned for attracting fleas, and I remember another Siamese we had, when we lived right near the beach got a couple, and we went through procedures to rid him of them of course, but got them very early if I remember.

Flees are rotten little critters but not their fault I guess in the whole process.

Frontline plus treatment is the only sure way to prevent fleas and tics.

Squeeze the required dose on the cats head where it can't reach it and it lasts for a month......dogs too.............we have no fleas at all here

To get rid of fleas in the house get 3 flea bombs from your pet supplies shop and remove all pets outside for 4 hours after setting off the bombs.

It has been hell! The itching was so bad I couldn‘t stop myself scratching until I looked at my legs and was worried I had scarred them. I‘ve never had a flea infested house before. I researched everything on the internet. A flea infested cat will drop eggs into the carpets etc where the flea cycle starts. I‘m an expert now!

A friend who was a cat expert did point out the cat might have fleas when she had a close look. The cat had super thick fur and I hadn‘t even thought of checking. I rang the cat owner and told her. She said the ‘flea dirt‘ was the dead remains as they had just treated him and that he just needed a daily good brush. I asked if my carpets and upholstery could be dffected and she said no.

I finally rang her again and told her I thought the cat did have fleas plus had had daily diarrhea the whole two weeks. I had told her a few times before too but she said it was a change of cat food.

I was meant to have the cat for a month but when I insisted it needed to get a vet checkup and I, as a pensioner, could get it done at the RSPCA vet for about $55 and would she be able to pay, she suddenly got her ex to pick up the cat to keep at his place as she didnt want the cat anymore. They had just separated and her new flat was no pets allowed.

This is an old childhood friend but I only see her rarely. She was always irresponsible, the stories I could tell.

Anyway, after the cat was gone I learned that he was a $1000 pedigree cat that a woman in Sydney had for over 6 years. He was much loved and pampered. Then the woman had to move overseas. She was heartbroken and left him with his $100 special catfood, thinking her daughter who was friends with my friends daughter had found a good home for him.

Poor Jack. He was the cat from heaven. He could communicate with meows, only wanted to be with me, got onto my lap when I watchf evening tv, kissing and cuddling me. He was Toilet Trained to go in a cat ‘cave‘. That‘s when the litter tray has a big cover on it. He was so lovely and no trouble at all. But he became frantic when he realised I was giving him away and kept trying to run and hide. But I had no choice as I wasn't the owner. She promised he would get another flea treatment but who knows. One of those people who get a pet and do the barest minimum, water and cheap dry food only, let outside to roam, etc though an indoors cat only who needed constant attention.

I don‘t know how Jack is going, poor thing. He was an exotic shorthair, aka short hair persian though now a separate breed. Almost impossible to get a kitten from the few breeders. He was a gorgeous pale ginger.

I was bitten by a flea today. I caught biting my hand and now got an itchy small red bump. The Mortein lasts up to 9 months but might have to call in pest control if this keeps up.

Sounds like you are all talk no action..........DO AS I SAY and you will cure the problem

Don't have animals in the house.

Dirty filthy creatures belong in the wild or in the dinner table.

Keep animals at home, then you live in a filthy house. So live with the filth and don't complain

Davey, I did set off Mortein flea bombs, one a room and they do work. This is the first flea and apparently it might take a few weeks to break the cycle for all of them. Might bomb again to make sure.

I don‘t hav a pet as I can‘t afford but I did dogsit two little dogs earlier in the year and got paid $150 for the week. They were outside dogs. However, this flea thing has cost me over a $100. Didn‘t get paid to look after the cat.

Three flea bites now in one day so have decided now to do a second bombing.

Make that four, just go bitten again sitting at the kitchen table! I havent worn knee high socks for a couple of days, obviously they were working.

If it is a government place get them to fix it for you - after all they cannot expect you to live in a flea infested place - at least they should pay for the flea bombs.

Why should the taxpayer have to pay.

Keep filthy animals inside and that's what you get- fleas

bookworm

Have you tried surface spray - under $3 at Woolies.

Most probably will be breeding in a carpet or a rug.

Thanks for the tip, Abby. They are still having a good bite at my ankles and other bits of me. I haven‘t used the Indorex spray yet. Going to get more Mortein flea bombs and bomb again. Then spray the indorex everywhere. I curse the day I said I would cat sit.
