How to clean your windscreen

man cleaning his windscreen

I always have trouble cleaning my windscreen. I do it and it looks fine for a half day, then at the slightest temperature change, it seems to go all foggy, kind of like a greasy shimmer (ooh, so descriptive!). Anyway, I'll be driving at night and that thin misty windscreen fog catches the lights of oncoming headlamps and it just makes it so hard to see.

Well, once again, I consulted the oracle (google) and found this. I tried it on the weekend and it worked a treat. So I'm giving it to you verbatim (in case I stuff up the instructions). It's from the RACV website, so, you'd hope they'd be fairly expert at this type of advice (in other words, don't blame me if it doesn't work for you!).

For interior windscreen cleaning:

  • wipe over the glass with a clean and dry microfibre cloth

  • spray the glass surface with an automotive glass cleaner

  • turn the microfibre cloth to the clean side and wipe the top edges of the windscreen. This prevents dirt stuck in this area from travelling down and dirtying the glass after you’ve cleaned it

  • switch to a clean cloth and spray the edges of the windscreen again and wipe clean

  • wipe the remaining, larger area of the glass – spray with more cleaner as necessary

  • wipe over the entire surface once more with a clean dry cloth

  • pour a little white vinegar on a clean microfibre cloth and wipe over glass surface. This will create a clear and sparkling finish.

For exterior windscreen cleaning:

  • wipe half of the glass surface with a clean cloth

  • spray the area with an automotive glass cleaner. Then wash it off

  • dry this area with a clean and dry towel. Then repeat steps 1 and 2 on the other half of the windscreen

  • pour a little white vinegar on a clean microfibre cloth and wipe over glass surface and you’ll get that same clear and sparkling finish.

If your vehicle has tinted windows, ensure you use products that are suitable for those surfaces.

Do you have a foolproof way to clean your windscreen? Can you tell me, because as well as this worked, it did take a fair bit of effort. Maybe it's because I sit typing all day, but my arm was bloody sore afterwards! Anyway, sharing's caring, so tell us your secrets!

I just use ordinary window cleaner...seems good enough.

I don't bother... Hubby does it anyway.... ha ha ha..

If the inside of the windscreen goes foggy then you turn the A/C on and make sure it is going onto the window   -- that will take the moisture from the area, doesn't matter if it is on warm or cool,  no more fog.

Outside I just use the windscreen washers when needed

If your car is very old or has seen a lot of outdoor time the exterior of the windscreen can be very well cleaner with a fine steel wool - grades 00, 000, or 0000 (the finest). Water with a circular action is not needed, but tends to help. Hose off afterwards and it will sparkle.

Go to a "Service Station" darn they are self service now.

Thats what grandkids are for...

Not to wash the windscreen with, I mean to wash them for you...lol
