How do I repot a cactus?

I have these two huge ceramic pots that were given to me recently. In them, I have placed smaller plastic pots with some big cactii that my folks transplanted for me from a much larger cactus bush they had removed from their property. When we first go them, they looked as if they got a bit 'sick', so I have left them and now they are looking much healthier and I'm thinking it might be time to repot them into the larger pots. Can anyone advise me on the best type of soil to use for cactus? Also, when is the best time to do it? Once again, any help will be much appreciated!

Leon, I have only two words to say  "very carefully" ;)

When I transplant one of my prickly friends

I fold up a newspaper and and then wrap it arround the stem

This stops the prickles attacking your hands.
